Mixed patterns same color. Why stop with mixing stripes when you can mix in other patterns as well? When you keep the colors to a strict palette the patterns will feel like an intentional mix. Try a wide stripe narrow stripe solid and fun printed textile like a batik or suzani in a matching hue.

The Greek‐key‐patterned pillow above combines many of the elements used in the room. It's a classic print that has a modern graphic look. The pewter beading detail and champagne color bring in the gray‐brown tones used throughout the room.

Magic mirrors and magic windows – in fact magic glass surfaces all over the house – will soon become commonplace thanks to breathtaking advancements in computers computer interfaces and of all things glass. It's all about the glass. The leading U.S. innovator in glass for consumer electronics Corning has developed a technology that enables it to manufacture flexible glass as if it were printing wallpaper. The flexible glass will be used as a computerized touch surface theoretically turning any surface – from refrigerator doors to countertops to entire walls – into smart‐touch displays that function like iPad devices. This glass will have the moisture permeability temperature tolerances and clarity of glass but the flexibility and low cost of plastic.

Pack a powerful punch. "We needed something bold and unexpected to create interest in this tiny formerly drab powder room " says Jennifer Jones of Niche Interiors. "This graphic packed the perfect punch".

This sophisticated bedroom gets a nice punch of color via furniture and decorative accessories in happy shades of coral. Because the coral elements are spread throughout the room it doesn't feel overly colorful and your eye is able to move about the space taking it all in. Additionally the white elements in the room keep the taupey‐tan hues from looking too muddy.

Massive paper lantern. Suspended over the table like a full moon the paper lantern is on a grand scale making this dining space so impressive. And while an authentic Noguchi paper lantern is stunning there are paper lanterns available at all prices and in all sizes.

Between the porthole window (nicely echoed by the round mirror) and the starfish accents this space could only be coastal. This proves you don't have to pile on nautical accents to lend a breezy beachy feel. With mirrored sparkle suave lighting and overtones of glamour this bath radiates Hollywood Regency chic. Stripped back to the bare essentials this bath typifies minimalist decor. Where do you think they keep the toiletries? Warm white tones soft light and a sweetly skirted vanity seat? Feels romantic to me. All it needs is a vase of fresh flowers and a candle or two.

Restaurant‐style doors and globe chandelier. Why not make the door a design feature? Restaurant‐style swinging doors with circular glass insets bring energy to the kitchen here while a chandelier made up of globe lights in different hues echoes the shape of the round panes in the door.

For buyers on the move choose a table that is easily transportable. For those who don't stay put a heavy table may prove to be an annoyance weighing you down each time you move. If you fall in love with a metal or marble table don't be discouraged from buying it but do think about how you might safely transport it. As suggested above choose a small round marble table or go for a wooden table with detachable legs. If you are looking for a table to suit an urban‐industrial decor theme don't go all‐out with a (heavy) metal table but consider a (lighter) wood table with some metal design features such as the one pictured here. Plastic as an alternative to wood is light and can be molded into some cool shapes but be aware that the color can fade over time.
