Bathtubs. There's nothing like a long luxurious bath. That luxury takes a lot of water – roughly 50 to 70 gallons per bath. Being water wise doesn't have to mean giving up your long soak. When remodeling or building look for smaller tubs with a capacity of less than 60 gallons. Also when you're just looking for a quick clean you'd be more water smart to jump in the shower where you'll use about half the water.

Want to let in more light? Try adhesive window films for more sun without sacrificing privacy. Replace the standard ceiling fixture with a classic drum pendant light on a dimmer switch. Add a piece of real furniture. An armchair (if you have the room) or a small gleaming wood or marble table is a good choice for the classic bath. Amp up the exotic touches and pay attention to the sensory experience to create a spalike ambience in your own bathroom. Put your overhead light on a dimmer. Everything looks better in soft light. Choose a few beautiful hand‐painted tiles and prop them up on your sink backsplash or hang them on the wall as art. Splurge on nice towels. I suggest supersoft and luxuriously big bath sheets as well as fringed and knotted hammam‐style towels to hang by the sink.

Some fabulous new products were shown at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show this year. Here are the latest finds for the room we all use but often neglect – the bathroom! Many of these items can be seen at Chicago's Merchandise Mart Luxe Home showrooms. Ever hear a song you love so much you wish you could bathe in it? Now thanks to Kohler and their VibrAcoustic bath series you can. Just plug in your iPod and let the vibrations of the beats flow through the water. Cast‐bronze sinks have been around for ages but this modern shape and gorgeous pattern offers a fresh interpretation. This is such a unique marble cut! These vein‐cut tiles are linear and directional unlike the typical swirled marble we're used to seeing. It's not stone it's petrified wood! This durable and rare tile would make for a luxurious and warm bathroom. I love the feeling of movement on these hand‐painted tiles. They would make a dramatic accent wall or backsplash. This hand‐carved stone pattern is created by master craftsmen in India using traditional techniques. The sculptural stone panels combine matte and glossy finishes. The overall effect is warm with a luxe touch of movement.

Show off your tilework. "We like to use frameless shower doors for a couple of reasons" says Mariette Barsoum of Divine Kitchens. "With a frameless door there's no visual separation which make the space larger. Plus unlike framed doors they don't hide the beautiful tilework in the shower. Frameless doors also sport a cleaner more modern look – and we like that". Make a small room feel larger. "I was inspired by the framework of this house and its secluded and forestlike surroundings" says Kimberly Arnold Fletcher of Spectrum Design Group. "My goal was to create an open feel and bring the outside into the master bathroom. The frameless door allowed me to not only provide a transparent look that mirrors the windows added to the space but it also made a very small room feel larger and more spacious".

Make peace with a loss of privacy. If you don't like to feel exposed – even when you're alone in the house – an open shower may not be for you. Even if you don't have a bare window wall such as the one in this bathroom you'll be on full view from the rest of the space. Consider a frosted or textured glass half‐wall as a compromise if modesty is an issue. Integrate the design with the rest of the space. Because there's no concrete border between an open shower and its surroundings choose materials that will create a smooth transition. The wall tile in this bath continues seamlessly into the shower with only a change in ceiling materials to provide a visual stopping point.

Add a half‐wall to protect against splashes. Ideally an open shower requires at least a 6‐foot buffer zone on every side to avoid flooding the rest of the bath with water. But a half‐wall such as the one that divides this shower from the vanity can help to contain droplets. Consider a corner location if possible. Orient the shower in a corner that faces away from the other bathroom zones. Not only does this guard against spraying water but it also preserves some measure of privacy (more on that in a minute).

I’ve always wanted a freestanding bathtub. I'm not really sure why. There's just something so appealing about all the different sizes and shapes and how they sit so independently in a room and seem to virtually say "Look at me". And now these designers have given me 16 more reasons why I need to get one. Take advantage of the view. "I must admit that the homeowners drove the decisions for these tubs" says James Crisp of Crisp Architects (see next photo also). "The real inspiration is the view. If a master bath has a separate shower and room for a freestanding tub strategically positioned to enjoy a great view the big question is why not?" This tub is from Waterworks.

Between the porthole window (nicely echoed by the round mirror) and the starfish accents this space could only be coastal. This proves you don't have to pile on nautical accents to lend a breezy beachy feel. With mirrored sparkle suave lighting and overtones of glamour this bath radiates Hollywood Regency chic. Stripped back to the bare essentials this bath typifies minimalist decor. Where do you think they keep the toiletries? Warm white tones soft light and a sweetly skirted vanity seat? Feels romantic to me. All it needs is a vase of fresh flowers and a candle or two.
