Here the classic silver vase looks great but I favor a simple glass vase as it catches light beautifully and goes with anything. Flea markets and yard sales are great hunting grounds for bargain antiques. Personal treasures. Your bedroom should be personal to you so be sure to display some of your treasured keepsakes. The glass dome on the bedside here could be used for a favorite ornament or maybe flowers from the first bouquet your sweetheart ever bought you. Bedside classics. Bedside books are accessories in their own right. I'm not suggesting you only read attractive books but stack a few old classics carefully chosen from a vintage bookstore and you have a gorgeous arrangement. A structured wall light. Wall lights save space on your bedside table for that pile of classic novels. Remember to keep everything in scale though – these would look lost on a big blank wall above your bed. Above‐the‐bed artwork. Without a huge ornate headboard or an architectural feature chances are you will need something above your bed. Pictures are wonderful but be sure they are themed. I like perfectly spaced symmetrical arrangements (rows of three work really well) which fit with traditional styling perfectly. Random shapes sizes and frame types also can look good especially if you are going for a more rustic feel but they're harder to get right. Just be sure to keep with a theme and keep the spacing equal. Something playful. I love to add a touch of humor to my styling and accessories are the perfect vehicle. This fish cushion makes me smile. You could also use a framed picture that introduces an element of fun to your room.

Think of a classic color palette for a young boy's bedroom and you probably imagine navy and denim blues reds khakis and tans and dark wood accents. And while there's a reason so many boys' spaces default to those hues (they're cheery yet masculine and they work for all ages) a less expected palette can feel just as appropriate. Check out the fresh fun examples below. Cocoa brown and turquoise punch up this lively boy's space. The zebra‐print rug and striped wall treatment are kid friendly yet sophisticated and they'll still look up‐to‐date when the stuffed animals give way to sports gear and electronic equipment. Here's another variation on that same color scheme. Because it's limited to just one wall the robot‐print wallpaper would be easy to strip and replace with a more adult pattern down the road. Hot orange sparks this otherwise neutral boy's bedroom. Orange is a terrific color for kids – it's youthful and energetic but not at all childish. This orange white and gray palette gives a sports theme a chic spin. It's proof that you don't have to drench your room in the colors of your favorite team to show your spirit. Red and khaki look fresh all over again with a liberal dose of black. Mod accents such as these pendant lights are often winners in a kids' space – they have an inherent whimsy that suits young ones well. This chocolate and citron palette takes its cue from tennis balls. The round accent pillows are an especially fun touch. Tangerine safety‐cone orange and neon green combine for a zesty zippy toddler's space.

Interior designer Letitia Holloway of Myers Designs and Debbie Wiener owner of Designing Solutions are well versed in this transformation and the complications that come with it. If you're thinking of turning your basement into an extra bedroom their tips and tricks can help. Insulate. The last thing you want is a noisy – and chilly – bedroom. "Spend a little extra and add good insulation to the walls” says Wiener. "One good night's sleep and you'll know you spent your money wisely.” Create emergency escape routes. Before beginning construction check your local building codes to learn what your basement's escape requirements are. The necessary routes can also enhance the room. "Installing large upper windows not only enhances the view but provides a great escape route” says Holloway. Look for the charm. Save money by leaving beams exposed or the ceiling unfinished – it will give your new cozy bedroom a feeling of distinction. Add visual height. Unfinished ceilings can also help add height to a space especially when painted a dark color. "Paint the ceiling dark and finish the rest of the room off as you would normally” says Holloway. "This type of ceiling works with a variety of aesthetics and the unfinished effect makes it feel higher than a drop or drywall style would.” Benjamin Moore's Baby Seal Black is one of Holloway's go‐to paint colors. Configure your layout wisely. Place the bed against an interior wall in the room. "Exterior walls change temperature meaning your bed will be cold in the winter and possibly through summer if your basement is below grade” says Wiener.

A bedroom is a very private space. Hotels know this and add a beautifully wrapped chocolate on the bedside table for that personal touch. The bedside table can tell a lot about a person. I love decorating these spaces because they are so personal. Bedside tables are important because they're the last thing you see when turning in for the night and the first thing you see when you wake. These small intimate spaces have to pack a visual punch by adding color and texture. At the same time they serve practical needs like holding our alarm clocks and eyeglasses. They come in all shapes and sizes different colors and styles. I've been asked many times about accessorizing these spaces. Here are some ideas for what I call the bedside vignette or in simple terms nightstands and the stuff we put on them. This is the area where you can really make a statement with lamps. I find that square lampshades or round lampshades that are 14 inches or less in diameter work best against a wall. Drawers are always great for storing things you need but don't want to get up for. I love this alternative lighting detail instead of a table lamp. A hanging chandelier on either side of the bed provides beautiful symmetry and frees the nightstand for other personal accessories. A pendant works just as well as a chandelier visually. The light wattage is lower though so I suggest using a pendant light in combination with can lighting. Stacked books look great with their colorful binding facing the room and are also good for elevating alarm clocks. This beautiful vignette is perfectly balanced with a lamp family photos fresh flowers and a candle.

This navy and pink room belongs to the youngest daughter – who was 3 at the time. Keim wanted to design a space that would reflect the girl's sweet and energetic personality and fit the style of the rest of the home. Keim and the girl's mother both fell in love with the wallpaper which dictated the rest of the room's style and color palette. The client trusted Keim so she was given a lot of room to experiment. While she played around with color and pattern she carefully choose the furniture so that it would last each girl into her teens and beyond. "I would use those pieces!" she says. The family's 10‐year‐old daughter loves turquoise so Keim chose a complementary shade of peachy‐orange to help it stand out. "As with most jobs I take their favorite color and make it the accent color " says Keim. "It usually pops more that way." A custom headboard grass cloth wall covering patterned pillows and classic lamps add visual texture and depth to the vibrant space. The tree bookcase was especially exciting for the daughter and she also loves the special pencil set on her desk. The vintage chair was reupholstered in scraps from Keim's showroom for an eclectic one‐of‐a‐kind piece. The girls share a large study a playroom and closets outside of the bedrooms so Keim didn't have to integrate a lot of storage or play space into these rooms.

The apartments in Olympic Village need to be a place where athletes can mentally emotionally and physically prepare for the biggest sporting moments of their lives. Here's a peek into the sleeping quarters common areas and open grounds where they're staying. Jonathan Edwards Olympic gold medalist and chair of the Athletes' Committee within the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games worked with a panel of architects interior designers and other athletes to implement additions in the apartments. Units range from one‐bedrooms to four‐ and five‐bedroom townhouses. A peek inside the bedrooms reveals Union Jack–clad standard beds that are 5 feet 8 inches long. Basketball players swimmers and others taller than that may request the superlong extendable Olympic beds. Blackout shades provide privacy and optimum sleep conditions. For the first time in the games' history there are lounges (pictured here) in each apartment where athletes can watch TV as well as large areas of green open space outside for them to relax in between events. Owning a piece – or a set – of Olympic history is within your reach when it comes to apartment furniture. Remains of the Games is already selling furnishings fixtures and equipment to interested buyers. You can purchase what's called the Athletes' Bedroom 4‐Piece Set (including a bed a mattress a night table and a nightlight) for only $150. "So many people want a piece of the Olympics and they're just mad about games memorabilia " says Paul Levin a marketing executive at Remains of the Games.

Unlike in a kitchen a living area or a den private papers and materials stay private in a bedroom and distractions tend to be fewer. The trick of course is to create an office that doesn't disrupt a bedroom's restful feel or take up more than its share of space. These homeowners and design pros have managed to come up with a happy middle ground. Take a look at how they made it work. A desk takes the place of a nightstand in this bedroom yet it blends in so smoothly that it doesn't immediately read as a work area. Keeping the finish and style consistent with the bed helps to integrate the two visually and the large piece of artwork mounted above takes some of the focus off the computer. This setup takes a similar tack. Trimming out the bulletin board with molding helps it to feel like a thoughtful part of the design rather than an incidental. Bedrooms are often designed so that windows flank the most natural spot to orient the bed which can make furniture placement tricky. If yours is the same way choose a low desk that won't obscure the sunlight and the views. The key to this bedroom office: the glam mirrored desk which blends into the space because of its reflectivity. Although it's perfectly functional stylish accents mask its workhorse side. If wall space is limited go vertical. Custom or prefab shelves which you can paint the same color as the walls maximize every inch.

Don't let the sloped ceilings and awkward architecture of the attic throw you off – with a little know‐how you can transform this often‐underused space into cozy sleeping quarters. Whether you're in need of a guest bedroom or simply want a brand‐new space for yourself check out the following professional tips for setting up a fabulous attic retreat. Arrange your furniture carefully. "Factor in space to sit and stand around main pieces of furniture like sofas chests and desks” says interior designer Meredith Heron. "Be sure to place the bed somewhere that you can get in and out comfortably.” Use sloped ceilings wisely. "Dormers are great for window seats desks or reading nooks” says Heron. "These types of activities don't require ceiling height so where things are constricted they provide extra function to that space.” If you're short on storage built‐in shelving is another wise use of the space where a sloped ceiling meets the floor. Consider skylights when arranging your layout. Do you like to read the morning paper in bed? Place your bed beneath the skylights. If you'd prefer natural light while getting ready for the day arrange your space so your vanity sits under the windows.

Sullivan Building & Design Group made the most of this space with an interior renovation that made a bedroom with built‐in beds and book nooks. An all‐white palette keeps things from looking cluttered. A custom bed with built‐in drawers and storage makes the most of this small space beneath the eaves. Built‐ins and wall‐mounted lights are great choices in supertight spaces. An attic conversion doesn't have to have a country look. This space by Catalin David shows that an attic bedroom can easily take a contemporary turn. The addition of skylights makes the space feel less cramped. Follow the lead of Gast Architects and treat sloped ceilings like walls by wallpapering them in a pretty petite print; here the treatment softens the look of the angles. A strong wall color paired with a crisp white ceiling and trim accentuates the angle of the roofline in this springlike bedroom. A built‐in window seat is a great way to take advantage of a nook beneath the window in a converted attic space. Two twin beds are tucked under the eaves of this room decorated by Alix J. Bragg. To make the most of the small space bedside lighting is wall mounted and under‐the‐bed baskets offer extra storage.
