Mirrors. Here's a look I recently enjoyed while visiting the Shangri‐La Hotel in Vancouver: mirrors layered over bathroom windows. It creates a resort feel but is practical and can be re‐created at home. Hanging a mirror in the window (either on a picture wire or by fixed metal supports) fills in the window enough to create a sense of privacy while still allowing light to filter in. For more privacy simply cover the exposed glass with translucent film.

Mix pattern and softness. Furniture is a traditional way to add texture to a home. This gorgeous Ligne Roset sofa gives an instant sense of comfort and makes a great focal point with the fabric echoing the pattern of the brick wall in a softer way. You can't help but sit and get cozy.

Mix in some monochrome. This dark hall dances on the edge of overwhelming but the monochromatic geometric pattern white marble and gleaming gold cupboard handles have turned the potentially dark tunnel into an enchanting corridor.

Same chair same color family. A riff on the same‐chair different‐colors idea but with more subtlety. The idea here is to choose closely related colors – try earth tones or shades of a single hue.

While distressed cabinets have a look all their own to begin with pulls help define the style. A sleek bar pull adds a modern element a dark pull creates contrast and a similarly distressed knob blends in allowing the detail in the cabinets to shine.

Picking bar stools and tables and chairs for an eat‐in kitchen usually comes at the end but this is also important so don't just mail it in at this point. Think about adding patina and texture through vintage pieces if you can find them. And don't forget about items like decorative plate racks artwork and area rugs or runners. Small touches like this can add much character to a newly remodeled kitchen.

You can find old painted shutters at any salvage shop. Just remember to seal them before using them as a headboard. Unpainted shutters add to the earthy exotic feel of this room. A large framed piece of corkboard does double duty as a bulletin board and as a ... well as a headboard. Hurray for pallets! They are often free (check first before taking) and they make excellent places to hang stuff on as well. Old fireplace mantels are salvage shop treasures that frame a simple upholstered headboard beautifully. In many places earthquakes prevent hanging anything remotely heavy over the bed (lest it fall on someone's head during the next tembler). This fabric art looks like an extension of the plain nearly invisible headboard here and adds a danger‐free way to decorate the wall.

Solo ledge. When there's ample shelving and storage elsewhere in the house it can make more sense to keep things simple around the fireplace. The single shelf in this living room is enough to add some chic coastal style with accessories.

Same chairs different colors. Take a basic set of matching wooden chairs and put your own stamp on them by painting each one a different hue. The trick here is to choose colors that have the same value (lightness or darkness) like all pastels all midtones or all bright.

Be honest about what is used in this room and make space for it. Do you craft while watching TV? Do the kids use the living room as their playroom? Stop the constant struggle to clean up these items and put them where they "belong". Instead work in some permanent living room storage space for toys crafts games and so on. If you need to make room first take out items that are not frequently used in the living room. Books that you want to keep but that no one is likely to read again anytime soon could go on shelves in a bedroom for instance.
