Unlike in a kitchen a living area or a den private papers and materials stay private in a bedroom and distractions tend to be fewer. The trick of course is to create an office that doesn't disrupt a bedroom's restful feel or take up more than its share of space. These homeowners and design pros have managed to come up with a happy middle ground. Take a look at how they made it work. A desk takes the place of a nightstand in this bedroom yet it blends in so smoothly that it doesn't immediately read as a work area. Keeping the finish and style consistent with the bed helps to integrate the two visually and the large piece of artwork mounted above takes some of the focus off the computer. This setup takes a similar tack. Trimming out the bulletin board with molding helps it to feel like a thoughtful part of the design rather than an incidental. Bedrooms are often designed so that windows flank the most natural spot to orient the bed which can make furniture placement tricky. If yours is the same way choose a low desk that won't obscure the sunlight and the views. The key to this bedroom office: the glam mirrored desk which blends into the space because of its reflectivity. Although it's perfectly functional stylish accents mask its workhorse side. If wall space is limited go vertical. Custom or prefab shelves which you can paint the same color as the walls maximize every inch.

With a new school year upon us now is the perfect time to give that teen lair an overhaul – and hopefully eke out a bit of quality bonding time in the process. To make this a successful decorating experience it helps to keep an open mind about your teen's creative direction. Recognize that he or she has good ideas and at the same time set clear limits that work for you (a project budget paint but not wallpaper etc.) for results that will make both of you happy in the end. Start an ideabook and create a floor plan. Gather inspiration images and collect the best in an ideabook on Houzz. Just looking at all the images together should help clarify what your son or daughter wants. Once you have the general style nailed down sketch out ideas for the new floor plan. A taller‐than‐average bedside table can do double duty as a desk – a great space saver in a small room. Also think about adding a focal point over the headboard. A quirky sculpture artwork or a pretty textile are all good choices. Just be sure anything that could fall on the bed is very well secured and not too heavy. Think about color and lighting. Once you know the look you are after it's time to think about paint. Use extra‐large paint swatches or get sample‐size amounts to try out colors directly on the wall before buying enough for the whole room to avoid a misstep. Lighting can instantly make the biggest change in a room so now is also the time to create a lighting plan. Add ambience with café lights strung across the ceiling install a dimmer switch for an overhead fixture and don't forget proper task lighting for the homework area.

This navy and pink room belongs to the youngest daughter – who was 3 at the time. Keim wanted to design a space that would reflect the girl's sweet and energetic personality and fit the style of the rest of the home. Keim and the girl's mother both fell in love with the wallpaper which dictated the rest of the room's style and color palette. The client trusted Keim so she was given a lot of room to experiment. While she played around with color and pattern she carefully choose the furniture so that it would last each girl into her teens and beyond. "I would use those pieces!" she says. The family's 10‐year‐old daughter loves turquoise so Keim chose a complementary shade of peachy‐orange to help it stand out. "As with most jobs I take their favorite color and make it the accent color " says Keim. "It usually pops more that way." A custom headboard grass cloth wall covering patterned pillows and classic lamps add visual texture and depth to the vibrant space. The tree bookcase was especially exciting for the daughter and she also loves the special pencil set on her desk. The vintage chair was reupholstered in scraps from Keim's showroom for an eclectic one‐of‐a‐kind piece. The girls share a large study a playroom and closets outside of the bedrooms so Keim didn't have to integrate a lot of storage or play space into these rooms.

However as I often remind myself that's no reason to settle for sloppy sleeping quarters. Here's a step‐by‐step guide to a well‐dressed pretty and polished bed. If you've got another great tip share it in the Comments below! Break out the iron. If you're anything like me you'd rather walk through Death Valley at high noon in a parka than put your iron to its intended use. (Full disclosure: The last time I unearthed mine it had cobwebs on it.) But pressed linens are crisp linens so face your nemesis. A standard ironing board is too small to handle sheets with ease – cover an inexpensive folding table or even a large sheet of plywood with heatproof foam or batting to give you more surface area to work with. Don't forget the bed skirt and shams while you're at it. Center and straighten the bedskirt. If your bed style doesn't require a skirt you can skip this step though you may want to invest in a box‐spring cover if your box spring is exposed. Pull the mattress pad smooth. Nothing ruins bedtime comfort faster than a lumpy bottom layer and pads are notorious for bunching in the center of the bed. Tuck the fitted sheet tightly. For optimal fit use an extra‐deep sheet if you have a pillow‐top or an especially tall mattress; otherwise a standard size should work fine. Pull it taut and tuck the edges beneath the mattress. Drape the flat sheet. Now the tricky part begins. Center the flat sheet on the bed with equal overhang on either side. Align the top edge with the top edge of the mattress.

The apartments in Olympic Village need to be a place where athletes can mentally emotionally and physically prepare for the biggest sporting moments of their lives. Here's a peek into the sleeping quarters common areas and open grounds where they're staying. Jonathan Edwards Olympic gold medalist and chair of the Athletes' Committee within the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games worked with a panel of architects interior designers and other athletes to implement additions in the apartments. Units range from one‐bedrooms to four‐ and five‐bedroom townhouses. A peek inside the bedrooms reveals Union Jack–clad standard beds that are 5 feet 8 inches long. Basketball players swimmers and others taller than that may request the superlong extendable Olympic beds. Blackout shades provide privacy and optimum sleep conditions. For the first time in the games' history there are lounges (pictured here) in each apartment where athletes can watch TV as well as large areas of green open space outside for them to relax in between events. Owning a piece – or a set – of Olympic history is within your reach when it comes to apartment furniture. Remains of the Games is already selling furnishings fixtures and equipment to interested buyers. You can purchase what's called the Athletes' Bedroom 4‐Piece Set (including a bed a mattress a night table and a nightlight) for only $150. "So many people want a piece of the Olympics and they're just mad about games memorabilia " says Paul Levin a marketing executive at Remains of the Games.

A footboard this unique needs some spiced‐up artwork. Here two natural wood planks echo the shape and orientation of the bed but add a little curve to the formality of the frame. Another benefit: Those planks fill the tall angled wall from bed to ceiling and lead your eye toward the expansive space above. Traditional artwork would have left an awkward large white area. If you have a print you really love combine it with other accents for interest. This combination of artwork a horizontal architectural piece beautifully textured wallpaper and a great light fixture makes for an eye‐catching collection. If you have a long and low headboard think about bringing a vertical element into the space for height. These hanging glass bubbles are the perfect contrast to the long flat line of the headboard. Here's another option for spicing up your headboard. Hang art over a portion of the headboard and add a little DIY art to the wall behind. These two additions keep things visually interesting and unpredictable. Sometimes all a headboard needs is a little asymmetry. Here a small print balances the bed as part of a simple asymmetrical arrangment. The black and white print and frame complement the colors and shape of the bed.

Natalie Younger loves wallpaper. She found her perfect client with this project: The entire house was inspired by graphic prints and bold colors. "This paper was installed as a feature wall and grounded the rest of the room's lighter tones by adding a little drama " she says. "I designed a custom velvet platform bed that was kept low to the ground in order to allow the wall to take center stage. The chandelier over the bed added to the mood and the crystal knob details on all the furniture rounded out that glitzy glamour feel." Accent the positive. This bedroom is part of an open loft so Valerie Pasquiou was looking to give it a bit of a cozy feel and some softness by bringing an "un‐overwhelming accent wall into the room with a hint of femininity " she says. "The overall idea was also to keep a light and crisp fresh feel to the room." Focus on texture. "When you have a really monochromatic bed and everything feels very calm and toned down you want something to be a focal point” says Tineke Triggs of Artistic Designs for Living. "This wallpaper brought texture and depth to the room.” Impress your guests. Interior designer Tara Seawright uses wallpaper in a lot of her projects.

Leave your shoes at the door. Now that your bedroom is clutter‐free and clean it's time to commit to keeping it that way. Start a no‐shoes policy – in your whole house if you can but at least in the bedroom. Place a table or basket outside your bedroom door to remind you to drop work materials cell phones and other gadgets before entering your new zone of calm. Create an organic bed. If you are in need of a new mattress (and can afford to spring for it) by all means go for one of the wonderful organic versions on the market today. But if not that doesn't mean you can't green up your bed. Try topping your mattress with a natural mattress pad and adding organic pillows and sheets. Organic goods are so mainstream now they can be found at all price points. Consider the walls and floors. While it does take more effort than any of the previous steps addressing your walls and floors is an important part of creating a more ecofriendly bedroom. If you are looking to change the wall color seek out paint containing low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If you have old peeling paint that may contain lead use caution and seek professional guidance for the best way to cover it. For the floor I recommend choosing hard flooring over wall‐to‐wall carpeting which is notoriously difficult to clean and tends to contain VOCs. If you already have wall‐to‐wall carpeting in place you can choose to have it removed or simply cover much of it with a natural fiber area rug. Choose the right color palette for your needs.

I never had a headboard until I made my own. A few years ago I followed Real Simple's step‐by‐step instructions (reproduced here) and in one day created my very own custom‐made special‐to‐me piece of furniture (or is it an accessory?) using a staple gun some cut‐to‐order plywood foam batting and a fabric scrap I picked up at my favorite upholstery shop. If I were more patient I could have added upholstery nails for added glam. A headboard can really make the room. It's like a piece of jewelry for your bed and depending on what you do with it it can also be a piece of art. All you need to make a grid of small covered panels is plywood a staple gun some batting and some good picture hangers. Her spectacular homemade headboard shows that choosing the right fabric makes all the difference. This was made in much the same way I made mine (plywood staple gun foam batting and that stunning fabric) but with a fancier cut on the plywood. If that seems daunting just keep in mind that this would look amazing as a big rectangle too. Here's her very helpful how‐to. A trifold room screen – minus one panel – set on its side and painted. Voilà. An ornate wooden room screen makes a perfect exotic headboard. A salvaged garden trellis give this pale room its shabby chic cherry on top. As with anything that has peeling paint spray a piece like this with a sealant to keep potentially toxic flakes at bay before using it in your bedroom. This is a freight elevator door turned on its side (notice the "Danger" stencil). Consider going muted and simple on the headboard and a little wild on the wall. Here what's behind the headboard is just as important as the headboard itself.
