Campaign furniture has become such a well‐loved interior element that it's easy to forget its workhorse roots. Developed for field use during military campaigns these pieces – chests tables desks and more – are easy to break down or fold flat so they were convenient to transport as soldiers migrated along with battle lines. Although there's a strong market for antique campaign pieces modern reproductions are just as popular and perhaps none more so than the Italian campaign canopy bed. This shapely style burst into the spotlight some years ago when retail giant Anthropologie debuted its interpretation and launched an instant classic. Unlike traditional British and French campaign furnishings which tend toward heavy woods and decorative flourishes this wrought iron bed has a spare profile that belies its imposing presence in a room. Whether you pile it with fabric and pillows or take the minimalist approach to bedding it mingles well with any decor. It's hard to get this bed style wrong – there's just something about it that defies design blunders. Although draping fabric over the canopy of an Italian campaign bed softens the look its svelte gently sloping lines look especially striking when left bare. Modern and minimalist spaces call for an unadorned canopy but you could take either approach in a more traditional room. This bed showcases the draped look to artful effect and prevents the otherwise spare room from feeling hollow. Imagine this bedroom without the campaign bed. The bed acts as an elegant anchor that adds structure to the space. A white finish lightens up the bed frame making it ideal for a young girl's room.

Here the classic silver vase looks great but I favor a simple glass vase as it catches light beautifully and goes with anything. Flea markets and yard sales are great hunting grounds for bargain antiques. Personal treasures. Your bedroom should be personal to you so be sure to display some of your treasured keepsakes. The glass dome on the bedside here could be used for a favorite ornament or maybe flowers from the first bouquet your sweetheart ever bought you. Bedside classics. Bedside books are accessories in their own right. I'm not suggesting you only read attractive books but stack a few old classics carefully chosen from a vintage bookstore and you have a gorgeous arrangement. A structured wall light. Wall lights save space on your bedside table for that pile of classic novels. Remember to keep everything in scale though – these would look lost on a big blank wall above your bed. Above‐the‐bed artwork. Without a huge ornate headboard or an architectural feature chances are you will need something above your bed. Pictures are wonderful but be sure they are themed. I like perfectly spaced symmetrical arrangements (rows of three work really well) which fit with traditional styling perfectly. Random shapes sizes and frame types also can look good especially if you are going for a more rustic feel but they're harder to get right. Just be sure to keep with a theme and keep the spacing equal. Something playful. I love to add a touch of humor to my styling and accessories are the perfect vehicle. This fish cushion makes me smile. You could also use a framed picture that introduces an element of fun to your room.

Leave your shoes at the door. Now that your bedroom is clutter‐free and clean it's time to commit to keeping it that way. Start a no‐shoes policy – in your whole house if you can but at least in the bedroom. Place a table or basket outside your bedroom door to remind you to drop work materials cell phones and other gadgets before entering your new zone of calm. Create an organic bed. If you are in need of a new mattress (and can afford to spring for it) by all means go for one of the wonderful organic versions on the market today. But if not that doesn't mean you can't green up your bed. Try topping your mattress with a natural mattress pad and adding organic pillows and sheets. Organic goods are so mainstream now they can be found at all price points. Consider the walls and floors. While it does take more effort than any of the previous steps addressing your walls and floors is an important part of creating a more ecofriendly bedroom. If you are looking to change the wall color seek out paint containing low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If you have old peeling paint that may contain lead use caution and seek professional guidance for the best way to cover it. For the floor I recommend choosing hard flooring over wall‐to‐wall carpeting which is notoriously difficult to clean and tends to contain VOCs. If you already have wall‐to‐wall carpeting in place you can choose to have it removed or simply cover much of it with a natural fiber area rug. Choose the right color palette for your needs.

Find a quiet corner in your home where you can draw the curtains. This daybed with great light control provided by the Roman shades is perfect for a 2 p.m. date with the sandman. Use a light blanket to cuddle up with. You will have a hard time falling asleep if you are chilly. Be careful to not overheat with heaters and blankets as this may cause you to oversleep. Surround yourself with blue. Blue is associated with tranquility and produces a calming effect. It is good for the mind‐body connection. Think of the sea and the sky and the calming effect of being outdoors. Try to find a space in your home where you feel removed from everything that is going on. Ideally you want to be away from the noise of TVs cell phones and the doorbell. This cozy nook feels just like a nest and curtains provide a visual barrier.

Interior designer Letitia Holloway of Myers Designs and Debbie Wiener owner of Designing Solutions are well versed in this transformation and the complications that come with it. If you're thinking of turning your basement into an extra bedroom their tips and tricks can help. Insulate. The last thing you want is a noisy – and chilly – bedroom. "Spend a little extra and add good insulation to the walls” says Wiener. "One good night's sleep and you'll know you spent your money wisely.” Create emergency escape routes. Before beginning construction check your local building codes to learn what your basement's escape requirements are. The necessary routes can also enhance the room. "Installing large upper windows not only enhances the view but provides a great escape route” says Holloway. Look for the charm. Save money by leaving beams exposed or the ceiling unfinished – it will give your new cozy bedroom a feeling of distinction. Add visual height. Unfinished ceilings can also help add height to a space especially when painted a dark color. "Paint the ceiling dark and finish the rest of the room off as you would normally” says Holloway. "This type of ceiling works with a variety of aesthetics and the unfinished effect makes it feel higher than a drop or drywall style would.” Benjamin Moore's Baby Seal Black is one of Holloway's go‐to paint colors. Configure your layout wisely. Place the bed against an interior wall in the room. "Exterior walls change temperature meaning your bed will be cold in the winter and possibly through summer if your basement is below grade” says Wiener.

Envision a deeply restorative space. The best way to begin any design project is with a clear vision of your hopes for the end result. Take a moment to ponder what your ideal bedroom space would look like and how it would feel – the scent the textures the sounds. Create as clear a picture as you possibly can and hold that in your mind as you move forward with the project. Clean the air. Air quality affects health and wellness and poor air quality can impact sleep. The easiest way to clean the air in your bedroom is simply to open your windows. Commit to letting fresh air into your bedroom for at least 10 minutes each day and the air quality is sure to improve. To take it a step further you may want to add several potted plants and an air purifier. Limit technology and remove emotional clutter. When you visualized your ideal bedroom I'd wager that it wasn't filled with clutter or the tangle of wires dangling from your laptop. Giving yourself a break from tech devices at night will help promote deeper rest and is probably a good idea healthwise as well. Also take a moment to consider the things you have stored in your bedroom. Are there boxes of bills and paperwork that make your stomach knot each time you see them? Piles of clothes that no longer fit workout tools you don't use or photos of friends you have a tense relationship with? All of these things can contribute to stress and insomnia so out they must go. Clean thoroughly and naturally. Often our bedrooms fall way down to the bottom of our cleaning to‐do list simply because not many others have to see these private spaces.

One smart solution to saving a new mom's sanity is incorporating a daybed or sofa into the nursery decor. This extra seating can serve as a comfortable spot to sit with your little one or to crash on those extra‐difficult nights. Creating a daybed in the nursery is as simple as pushing a box spring and mattress to the wall and adding a few comfortable pillows. The daybed shown here has the appearance of a lush sofa with the size and comfort of a full‐size bed. Thanks to stores such as Ikea and sites like Craigslist finding an inexpensive sofa can be a simple task. If the fabric isn't exactly what you had in mind don't rule out the piece. Try draping a blanket or quilt over the cushions to freshen up the look. If adding an extra bed or couch to the nursery has you concerned about space planning consider placing the crib at an angle. This will keep the furniture in the room from hugging the walls and will help open up the space. If you incorporate the extra bed into the nursery decor you will have less redecorating to do when the time for a big‐kid bed rolls around. Many young families enjoy spending time in the baby's nursery. The rooms are often peaceful calming spaces so adding a few toys for older siblings like the stuffed animals and rocking horse shown here will help them feel right at home too. Having a cozy spot for nursing or to rest with baby is a nice way to pamper yourself during those first few tiring months that baby's home. When you're no longer spending as much time in the room you can easily remove the extra furniture and place it in other areas of the home.

Carving out a soothing space like the one shown here with its white linens simple lighting and book collection will not only provide guests with comfort but the bed placement will give them a bit of privacy – even if bunking with others is required. Even the most narrow spaces can house guests. By placing a bed under the window in this hallway with a lamp table and parson's chair on the opposite wall guests will have everything they need close at hand. If you have a deep closet available in your home office why not tuck a mattress inside? Removing the closet doors and adding pretty bedding that coordinates with the room's decor will make the space feel intentional. Ever since the first Harry Potter book was published the idea of a room under the stairs has been intriguing to both children and adults. Just imagine how happy your littlest houseguests will be when they discover where they'll be sleeping. Creating a sleeping nook with curtains is a great idea if the nook is in an often‐used part of your home. If guests need more privacy they can simply close the drapes. If your home already has a daybed this spot can work for guests too. Dens are great for overnight guests. This windowed pocket door may not provide all of the necessary privacy but the drapery rod and panels are a great quick fix.

Decide which furniture to keep. As you are going through the room note which pieces you want to keep and which will be sold or given away. But before buying anything new consider updating existing furniture with fresh paint or knobs and look around the rest of the house (including in the attic and the basement) for forgotten treasures. Shop for new items. Look for pieces that can also be used in a first apartment (or dorm room) to get the most bang for your buck. Small side tables cushions throw blankets lamps and small‐scale armchairs will all be most welcome in those first digs away from home. Go on a "cool junk" hunt together. Make a date to hit a flea market or antiques and collectibles fair to see what you can find. Bring cash (only as much as you want to spend) measurements of key areas and a dolly or cart to carry home your finds. Wire storage lockers like the ones shown here are superversatile – use them for everything from shoes and scarves to craft supplies and books. Incorporate photos of friends. One of the downsides to taking mostly digital photos is that we tend to print photos less often. As part of this project be sure to give your teen the opportunity to have some recent pictures printed – some to frame and others to tape up in a rotating display. Japanese masking tape (also called washi tape) comes in a mind‐boggling array of colors and patterns is easily removable from most surfaces and can be used in tons of ways (like in the photo display seen here). A set would make a lovely gift for your teen when this project is complete. Try a small DIY project.
