A footboard this unique needs some spiced‐up artwork. Here two natural wood planks echo the shape and orientation of the bed but add a little curve to the formality of the frame. Another benefit: Those planks fill the tall angled wall from bed to ceiling and lead your eye toward the expansive space above. Traditional artwork would have left an awkward large white area. If you have a print you really love combine it with other accents for interest. This combination of artwork a horizontal architectural piece beautifully textured wallpaper and a great light fixture makes for an eye‐catching collection. If you have a long and low headboard think about bringing a vertical element into the space for height. These hanging glass bubbles are the perfect contrast to the long flat line of the headboard. Here's another option for spicing up your headboard. Hang art over a portion of the headboard and add a little DIY art to the wall behind. These two additions keep things visually interesting and unpredictable. Sometimes all a headboard needs is a little asymmetry. Here a small print balances the bed as part of a simple asymmetrical arrangment. The black and white print and frame complement the colors and shape of the bed.

Accessories are seldom bought all at once. Often they are a mixture of new and old – they add character to your room and say as much about you as the colors and style you have chosen. However don't underestimate their importance in styling or in practicality. A mismatched or incorrectly placed piece could destroy the look you have been trying to achieve or hinder your day‐to‐day use of the room. If you have a traditional bedroom think vintage‐inspired accessories and textiles rather than chrome and high gloss. Go for crisp white cotton sheets with a statement throw and matching cushions sparkling crystal and pretty flowers vintage mirrors and lighting and definitely some vintage rugs. A plush chair. If you have the space make sure you have a comfy chair to retreat to when chaos reigns elsewhere in your home. I love the way the stripes used here reflect the light from the Venetian blinds. Stripes are a good choice for traditional styling and neutral colors suit both men and women. Stripes and florals were made for each other so add a pretty floral cushion in matching tones and you'll have a spot you both love. Extra mirrors. Mirrors are a practical necessity in any bedroom but try to think creatively when positioning them. The mirrors above the bedside tables here reflect the light from the window and will also look pretty when the bedside lamps are on. If your room isn't very wide they'll also add depth. A posy vase. No traditional bedside table is complete without a posy vase. Fill it with fragrant sweet peas or simple country garden blooms and they'll be sure to lift your spirits when the alarm goes off.

Don't overcrowd the space. Attic bedrooms are generally tighter spaces and if there are sloped ceilings the room can feel claustrophobic with too many furnishings. Add only what you need – less is definitely more in this case. Consider a two‐tone paint job. "Painting is always tricky when working with an attic space as the walls are often shortened and the ceiling space is greater than in most rooms” says Heron. "For a cozy feeling consider painting the walls a different color than the ceiling.” Or trick the eye by using all one color. "If you want the space to feel more spacious paint the ceiling and wall the same color but keep it to a light neutral or white” advises Heron. Nix the overhead lights. "Forget pot lights in the attic” says Heron. "Opt instead for table lamps or wall sconces; uplighting is a great way to play up a dramatic roofline".

Campaign furniture has become such a well‐loved interior element that it's easy to forget its workhorse roots. Developed for field use during military campaigns these pieces – chests tables desks and more – are easy to break down or fold flat so they were convenient to transport as soldiers migrated along with battle lines. Although there's a strong market for antique campaign pieces modern reproductions are just as popular and perhaps none more so than the Italian campaign canopy bed. This shapely style burst into the spotlight some years ago when retail giant Anthropologie debuted its interpretation and launched an instant classic. Unlike traditional British and French campaign furnishings which tend toward heavy woods and decorative flourishes this wrought iron bed has a spare profile that belies its imposing presence in a room. Whether you pile it with fabric and pillows or take the minimalist approach to bedding it mingles well with any decor. It's hard to get this bed style wrong – there's just something about it that defies design blunders. Although draping fabric over the canopy of an Italian campaign bed softens the look its svelte gently sloping lines look especially striking when left bare. Modern and minimalist spaces call for an unadorned canopy but you could take either approach in a more traditional room. This bed showcases the draped look to artful effect and prevents the otherwise spare room from feeling hollow. Imagine this bedroom without the campaign bed. The bed acts as an elegant anchor that adds structure to the space. A white finish lightens up the bed frame making it ideal for a young girl's room.

Sally's bedroom growing up was a whirlwind of pink wallpaper floral textiles frilly curtains and precious dolls. In typical Draper fashion it was girly but still simple and refined. Now that Sally is getting into her tweens and teens her rebellious side is starting to pop up.Sally's bedroom growing up was a whirlwind of pink wallpaper floral textiles frilly curtains and precious dolls. In typical Draper fashion it was girly but still simple and refined. Now that Sally is getting into her tweens and teens her rebellious side is starting to pop up. Sally may be a a girly girl for at least the beginning of her tween years but as she starts to develop her own style (and delves into the wild style of the early '70s) bold patterns and color may start to make an appearance in her room. Pale pink walls can be replaced with a vibrant (but tasteful) lavender and a bright pink duvet can cover up the old floral bedding. A graphic rug gives this bedoom the final dose of that great mod style.

Creating an area above a large bed for childhood keepsakes trinkets and books will make the room feel more cozy and childlike. If you're worried about a big bed taking up too much space consider painting the wall behind the bed a nice dark color. This will give the illusion of depth and make the room appear larger. Another great trick to add the illusion of space is to use lots of mirrors. I love the brightness the two mirrors flanking this large bed bring to the room. If you have the square footage lining the walls with multiple queen‐size beds is a great way to sleep a crowd. This room is perfect for slumber parties and late‐night pillow fights. This space looks like it was just transformed into a more mature design. The map keeps it playful but you'll be happy to hang on to the furniture long after your child has left for college. When choosing furniture go for timeless clean pieces your child will be happy to keep well into adulthood. Keeping the room colorful as with this bright pink accent wall will prevent the space from becoming too grown‐up. This cute nautical‐themed room would be great for a growing boy. The materials and patterns feel youthful but classic so it works as an instant guest room when necessary.

I love the inventive way a screen has been used here. It's a hugely flexible item too; if bought cheaply in poor condition it can be creatively re‐covered in wallpaper or fabric. The brass bed often appeared in Victorian bedrooms. If you like the design but the finish feels a little too traditional then get out your paintbrush. White makes for a soft and romantic aesthetic or go for a bold and contrasting color choice to get a more eclectic look. Bedside tables were seldom matching as this was not the era of uniform bedroom sets. Try using one plain table covered with a tablecloth or lace and an antique table or old military chest for the other side. Traditional Victorian bedrooms also had a washstand – a free‐standing piece of furniture with a marble top a bowl and a water pitcher. Put a washstand to good use in your en suite. They can even be converted to hold modern plumbing. Fixtures and fittings in a Victorian bedroom would have been much the same as in the rest of the house including architectural moldings and a fireplace of course. Many houses have had fireplaces taken out or blocked off but the recesses make for great storage and the mantel is ideal for a mirror. While open fires can be messy in a bedroom consider a gas alternative for a convenient and clean flame. Pure indulgence and in true Victorian style the perfect spot for an armchair. Finally don't be a slave to your Victorian bedroom. You can keep all the traditional features and throw in some glamour and contemporary pieces for a gorgeous eclectic look. I'm sure Jane Eyre would approve.

Here the classic silver vase looks great but I favor a simple glass vase as it catches light beautifully and goes with anything. Flea markets and yard sales are great hunting grounds for bargain antiques. Personal treasures. Your bedroom should be personal to you so be sure to display some of your treasured keepsakes. The glass dome on the bedside here could be used for a favorite ornament or maybe flowers from the first bouquet your sweetheart ever bought you. Bedside classics. Bedside books are accessories in their own right. I'm not suggesting you only read attractive books but stack a few old classics carefully chosen from a vintage bookstore and you have a gorgeous arrangement. A structured wall light. Wall lights save space on your bedside table for that pile of classic novels. Remember to keep everything in scale though – these would look lost on a big blank wall above your bed. Above‐the‐bed artwork. Without a huge ornate headboard or an architectural feature chances are you will need something above your bed. Pictures are wonderful but be sure they are themed. I like perfectly spaced symmetrical arrangements (rows of three work really well) which fit with traditional styling perfectly. Random shapes sizes and frame types also can look good especially if you are going for a more rustic feel but they're harder to get right. Just be sure to keep with a theme and keep the spacing equal. Something playful. I love to add a touch of humor to my styling and accessories are the perfect vehicle. This fish cushion makes me smile. You could also use a framed picture that introduces an element of fun to your room.

A classic serpentine chest of drawers holds a crystal lamp a small sculpture and fresh flowers. Also included here is a small piece of art in dreamy bedroom colors. Art does not have to be hung on a wall. Leaning small artworks against the wall provides a layered look. A step table is a great option beside a bed because it allows layers of surface area. A lamp books art water and fresh flowers all fit on this versatile piece. Notice how the color of the step table adds to the room's palette. A petite tray table with a small drawer has just enough space for a colorful lamp fresh flowers and a small jewelry box. Boxes of any style are great for holding earrings and necklaces taken off just before bed. This homemade bedside table consists of vintage suitcases on blocks. It's a creative and visual win for this room. Notice that the suitcases are on the low side allowing for an adjustable lamp and a full view of the window. All the bedside basics fit onto a tray that provides a flat surface. Consider a wall‐mounted table for the tiniest of spaces. There's just enough room for an adjustable lamp art and an alarm clock. A beautiful white chest of drawers holds a lamp in the center a plant to the left and an alarm clock. Notice the federal‐style mirror to the side of the lamp creating a layered bedside vignette.
