Perfect symmetry. Just because you love minimalist design doesn't mean you have to go without when it comes to storage. This unit combines ample space in the lower cabinets with plenty of display space above. The natural timber contrasts nicely with the tiles wrapping around the fireplace surround. For a polished and professional‐looking finish custom‐made cabinets are often the way to go. The cabinets work so well here because they align precisely with the top of the fireplace.
Give newspapers and magazines a temporary home. One neat basket of magazines or newspapers looks fine – a table strewn with them not so much. Dedicate one generously sized basket to house periodicals and commit to weeding out old issues when they no longer comfortably fit in the container.
Enough's enough. Take care not to plan for more shelves than you need. Asian‐style homes tend to display only the most thoughtfully selected items so simple modern shelves that frame this fireplace top and bottom suit the space perfectly. Consider downlights as a way to give those display items pride of place.
Lots of white. Just as with floral upholstery if you have a bold stripe that is threatening to overwhelm your room try whiting it out with crisp white walls and white slipcovered furniture.
Matching lamps anchor each end of the cabinet top; they are an uncanny match to the painting. "When I found these I knew they would be key pieces to the room. They are showstoppers" Ricco says. The warm bronze on the base and hardware is part of a wide variety of mixed metals in the room while the light base stands out against the dark cabinet. The etching even mimics the artwork. The cabinet lamps and painting serve as the main focal point in the room.
Dusty blue. Like warm gray dusty shades of blue work well with most tones of red brick complementing rather than competing with them. In this kitchen a brick oven is surrounded by dusty blue painted cabinets a warm cherry island counter and chandeliers for a bit of sparkle. Pale dusty‐blue walls look stunning in this bedroom around a brick fireplace. Off‐white trim and distressed white furniture looks richer than pure white.
