An assortment of books. One of the most enjoyable pastimes when visiting someone else's home is rummaging through their book collection. Whether you have a full wall of shelving or a slender cabinet or case stock it with a variety of reading material that appeals to all tastes: mysteries bestsellers nonfiction short stories and more. Don't forget to add bedside lamps or reading lights as well as a cushy spot in which to curl up. A folding luggage stand. This hotel‐inspired touch saves guests from having to squat all the way to the floor to rifle through their suitcases. Stash it in the closet when you're not expecting company or leave it open as a design detail. Here it takes the place of a bench at the foot of the bed. Piles of pillows. Some like them flat some like them fluffy. Some prefer down while others sneeze at the mere thought. Keep an assortment of pillows on hand to satisfy guests' individual tastes. And while you're at it invest in a couple of good blankets (one light one heavy) and the best bed linens you can afford. Hooks and hangers. Unlike you your guests don't have a designated spot in your home to tuck away purses and hang car keys. Make it easy for them by mounting hooks and wall racks (might we suggest the Eames Hang‐It‐All?). And make sure that there are plenty of coat hangers in a closet or an armoire.

Notice also the delicate layers of pattern in the tone‐on‐tone wallpaper. A rod (versus chain) installation creates a crisp and somewhat masculine aesthetic that works very well with these drum shades. This eclectic bedroom stretches the limits of minimalism by blending the pendants into the wall. The result is pure function as the aesthetic is more about what is not there. Now this is what I meant by "secret weapon." This otherwise simple bedroom is kicked into high gear with these fabulous pendants. When design goes outside the box magic happens. A guest bedroom is a great place in which to sport a bedside pendant that is unique and memorable. These great pendants look like fancy dinner napkins. The result is a whimsical one‐of‐a‐kind environment for a lucky houseguest.

A classic serpentine chest of drawers holds a crystal lamp a small sculpture and fresh flowers. Also included here is a small piece of art in dreamy bedroom colors. Art does not have to be hung on a wall. Leaning small artworks against the wall provides a layered look. A step table is a great option beside a bed because it allows layers of surface area. A lamp books art water and fresh flowers all fit on this versatile piece. Notice how the color of the step table adds to the room's palette. A petite tray table with a small drawer has just enough space for a colorful lamp fresh flowers and a small jewelry box. Boxes of any style are great for holding earrings and necklaces taken off just before bed. This homemade bedside table consists of vintage suitcases on blocks. It's a creative and visual win for this room. Notice that the suitcases are on the low side allowing for an adjustable lamp and a full view of the window. All the bedside basics fit onto a tray that provides a flat surface. Consider a wall‐mounted table for the tiniest of spaces. There's just enough room for an adjustable lamp art and an alarm clock. A beautiful white chest of drawers holds a lamp in the center a plant to the left and an alarm clock. Notice the federal‐style mirror to the side of the lamp creating a layered bedside vignette.

Repeat the pattern on twin or triplet beds. Here an electric paisley pattern repeated on three beds and window treatments enlivens the room. Use remnants for a unique patchwork design. Creative decorator Cherie Marcel didn't let her fabric samples go to waste; instead she used them to fashion a fabulous headboard. Allow the patterned headboard to be the star of the bedscape. Keep the duvet and shams solid and with minimal detailing like this hotel‐style bedding and use a minimal amount of coordinating throw pillows. Coordinate with a bed skirt or a bed platform to create continuity. Pay attention to the way the pattern relates to the headboard's shape. Here the vertical stripes emphasize the point at the top of the headboard. Note the way the stripes on the bed skirt and the headboard align. If you don't have a headboard create the illusion of one by hanging a quilt on the wall above the bed. It can cozy up a room and create interesting proportions with dramatic height.

Envision a deeply restorative space. The best way to begin any design project is with a clear vision of your hopes for the end result. Take a moment to ponder what your ideal bedroom space would look like and how it would feel – the scent the textures the sounds. Create as clear a picture as you possibly can and hold that in your mind as you move forward with the project. Clean the air. Air quality affects health and wellness and poor air quality can impact sleep. The easiest way to clean the air in your bedroom is simply to open your windows. Commit to letting fresh air into your bedroom for at least 10 minutes each day and the air quality is sure to improve. To take it a step further you may want to add several potted plants and an air purifier. Limit technology and remove emotional clutter. When you visualized your ideal bedroom I'd wager that it wasn't filled with clutter or the tangle of wires dangling from your laptop. Giving yourself a break from tech devices at night will help promote deeper rest and is probably a good idea healthwise as well. Also take a moment to consider the things you have stored in your bedroom. Are there boxes of bills and paperwork that make your stomach knot each time you see them? Piles of clothes that no longer fit workout tools you don't use or photos of friends you have a tense relationship with? All of these things can contribute to stress and insomnia so out they must go. Clean thoroughly and naturally. Often our bedrooms fall way down to the bottom of our cleaning to‐do list simply because not many others have to see these private spaces.

The apartments in Olympic Village need to be a place where athletes can mentally emotionally and physically prepare for the biggest sporting moments of their lives. Here's a peek into the sleeping quarters common areas and open grounds where they're staying. Jonathan Edwards Olympic gold medalist and chair of the Athletes' Committee within the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games worked with a panel of architects interior designers and other athletes to implement additions in the apartments. Units range from one‐bedrooms to four‐ and five‐bedroom townhouses. A peek inside the bedrooms reveals Union Jack–clad standard beds that are 5 feet 8 inches long. Basketball players swimmers and others taller than that may request the superlong extendable Olympic beds. Blackout shades provide privacy and optimum sleep conditions. For the first time in the games' history there are lounges (pictured here) in each apartment where athletes can watch TV as well as large areas of green open space outside for them to relax in between events. Owning a piece – or a set – of Olympic history is within your reach when it comes to apartment furniture. Remains of the Games is already selling furnishings fixtures and equipment to interested buyers. You can purchase what's called the Athletes' Bedroom 4‐Piece Set (including a bed a mattress a night table and a nightlight) for only $150. "So many people want a piece of the Olympics and they're just mad about games memorabilia " says Paul Levin a marketing executive at Remains of the Games.

Although I mentioned not wanting to buy expensive art to get tripped over I have no problem with it being displayed on the wall. The piece shown in this image is so gorgeous and really sets the mood for the room. Nightstand space comes at a premium. Books clocks and phones all vie for room. Bedding is expensive especially once you find the perfect duvet pillow shams throw pillows and so on. I've often thought of a neutral color scheme as being boring and safe. When I think of custom drapery my mind often envisions heavy fabric overpowering a room. Area rugs are often used to tie a space together. I love how this rug is the room's focal point. Generally speaking most nightstands are round or square. Who says you have to follow those rules?

Grab center stage. Natalie Younger loves wallpaper. She found her perfect client with this project: The entire house was inspired by graphic prints and bold colors. Grab center stage. Natalie Younger loves wallpaper. She found her perfect client with this project: The entire house was inspired by graphic prints and bold colors. "This paper was installed as a feature wall and grounded the rest of the room's lighter tones by adding a little drama " she says. "I designed a custom velvet platform bed that was kept low to the ground in order to allow the wall to take center stage. The chandelier over the bed added to the mood and the crystal knob details on all the furniture rounded out that glitzy glamour feel." Accent the positive. This bedroom is part of an open loft so Valerie Pasquiou was looking to give it a bit of a cozy feel and some softness by bringing an "un‐overwhelming accent wall into the room with a hint of femininity " she says. "The overall idea was also to keep a light and crisp fresh feel to the room." Focus on texture. "When you have a really monochromatic bed and everything feels very calm and toned down you want something to be a focal point” says Tineke Triggs of Artistic Designs for Living. "This wallpaper brought texture and depth to the room.” Impress your guests. Interior designer Tara Seawright uses wallpaper in a lot of her projects.

Carving out a soothing space like the one shown here with its white linens simple lighting and book collection will not only provide guests with comfort but the bed placement will give them a bit of privacy – even if bunking with others is required. Even the most narrow spaces can house guests. By placing a bed under the window in this hallway with a lamp table and parson's chair on the opposite wall guests will have everything they need close at hand. If you have a deep closet available in your home office why not tuck a mattress inside? Removing the closet doors and adding pretty bedding that coordinates with the room's decor will make the space feel intentional. Ever since the first Harry Potter book was published the idea of a room under the stairs has been intriguing to both children and adults. Just imagine how happy your littlest houseguests will be when they discover where they'll be sleeping. Creating a sleeping nook with curtains is a great idea if the nook is in an often‐used part of your home. If guests need more privacy they can simply close the drapes. If your home already has a daybed this spot can work for guests too. Dens are great for overnight guests. This windowed pocket door may not provide all of the necessary privacy but the drapery rod and panels are a great quick fix.
