The first time I saw a really fun kids' bed was in the 1980s on the show Silver Spoons starring a very young Ricky Schroder and Jason Bateman. Little Ricky's bed was a white racecar and every kid wanted one (we also wanted that train he rode around the manse). Today the racecars have been upgraded to high‐end Ferrari models and other thematic beds have followed suit from boats to wrestling rings. See if you can find one that might ease your time‐for‐bed struggles. A small car is a great transitional bed between crib and big‐boy bed (perhaps a future Ferrari). I am sounding sexist; of course a car can inspire your little Danica Patrick or Lella Lombardi wannabes too. Have fun with the bed and let it inspire the rest of the room. In this case the car is parked in swinging London. An overnight pit stop here with a hideaway loft overhead has all the fun of a motor speedway. A wall mural is a simpler way to put hot rods into context. Let you child count down the years until that driver's test with a mural of your hometown (in this case Atlanta). Canopy beds were invented to keep out cold drafts hundreds of years ago and royalty enjoyed them. Today they are still fit for a little princess. Nautical style can give bunk beds a boat‐cabin feel; a porthole window and marine lights add to the look. Bunk beds can take on all kinds of structures. Secret treehouse fort meets sleepy time in these tucked‐away bunk beds.

Here the classic silver vase looks great but I favor a simple glass vase as it catches light beautifully and goes with anything. Flea markets and yard sales are great hunting grounds for bargain antiques. Personal treasures. Your bedroom should be personal to you so be sure to display some of your treasured keepsakes. The glass dome on the bedside here could be used for a favorite ornament or maybe flowers from the first bouquet your sweetheart ever bought you. Bedside classics. Bedside books are accessories in their own right. I'm not suggesting you only read attractive books but stack a few old classics carefully chosen from a vintage bookstore and you have a gorgeous arrangement. A structured wall light. Wall lights save space on your bedside table for that pile of classic novels. Remember to keep everything in scale though – these would look lost on a big blank wall above your bed. Above‐the‐bed artwork. Without a huge ornate headboard or an architectural feature chances are you will need something above your bed. Pictures are wonderful but be sure they are themed. I like perfectly spaced symmetrical arrangements (rows of three work really well) which fit with traditional styling perfectly. Random shapes sizes and frame types also can look good especially if you are going for a more rustic feel but they're harder to get right. Just be sure to keep with a theme and keep the spacing equal. Something playful. I love to add a touch of humor to my styling and accessories are the perfect vehicle. This fish cushion makes me smile. You could also use a framed picture that introduces an element of fun to your room.

Accessories are seldom bought all at once. Often they are a mixture of new and old – they add character to your room and say as much about you as the colors and style you have chosen. However don't underestimate their importance in styling or in practicality. A mismatched or incorrectly placed piece could destroy the look you have been trying to achieve or hinder your day‐to‐day use of the room. If you have a traditional bedroom think vintage‐inspired accessories and textiles rather than chrome and high gloss. Go for crisp white cotton sheets with a statement throw and matching cushions sparkling crystal and pretty flowers vintage mirrors and lighting and definitely some vintage rugs. A plush chair. If you have the space make sure you have a comfy chair to retreat to when chaos reigns elsewhere in your home. I love the way the stripes used here reflect the light from the Venetian blinds. Stripes are a good choice for traditional styling and neutral colors suit both men and women. Stripes and florals were made for each other so add a pretty floral cushion in matching tones and you'll have a spot you both love. Extra mirrors. Mirrors are a practical necessity in any bedroom but try to think creatively when positioning them. The mirrors above the bedside tables here reflect the light from the window and will also look pretty when the bedside lamps are on. If your room isn't very wide they'll also add depth. A posy vase. No traditional bedside table is complete without a posy vase. Fill it with fragrant sweet peas or simple country garden blooms and they'll be sure to lift your spirits when the alarm goes off.

I'm advocating breaking one of my design rules. Well I don't really believe in strict design rules but generally I try to keep big investment pieces (like beds) neutral solid and classic and bring in prints patterns bolder colors and trendy fabrics via less permanent items like rugs throw pillows duvet covers and window treatments. However these gorgeous patterned headboards have been screaming for my attention and I cannot ignore them any longer. Would you sleep beneath a patterned headboard? If so what kind of textile or pattern would you use? Let me know in the Comments section! Go bold and go for height – dynamic fabrics and exaggerated verticality on a headboard can change the entire feeling of a room. These brilliant textiles add to the Moroccan style of this home and the wall behind them painted up to chair‐rail height tricks the eye distorting how we perceive the colors and proportions. Extend the headboard to new heights to show off a beautiful fabric on it and your shams. It would have been a design travesty not to show off this beautiful suzani fabric. Match a sham or another pillow to the headboard. This will give the bedscape a continuous look vertically like these damask‐pattern shams do. To tie a larger area to the bed extend the headboard behind nightstands. A bold trellis pattern grounds this bed with the appropriate scale. You don't have to use fabric to execute this idea. At the Upward Bound House interior designer Vanessa De Vargas used wallpaper to create the look of an extended headboard. You can also use a special traditional fabric. Design Sponge blogger Grace Bonney helped educate the masses about traditional Mexican Otomi embroidery with her famous DIY headboard.

Decide which furniture to keep. As you are going through the room note which pieces you want to keep and which will be sold or given away. But before buying anything new consider updating existing furniture with fresh paint or knobs and look around the rest of the house (including in the attic and the basement) for forgotten treasures. Shop for new items. Look for pieces that can also be used in a first apartment (or dorm room) to get the most bang for your buck. Small side tables cushions throw blankets lamps and small‐scale armchairs will all be most welcome in those first digs away from home. Go on a "cool junk" hunt together. Make a date to hit a flea market or antiques and collectibles fair to see what you can find. Bring cash (only as much as you want to spend) measurements of key areas and a dolly or cart to carry home your finds. Wire storage lockers like the ones shown here are superversatile – use them for everything from shoes and scarves to craft supplies and books. Incorporate photos of friends. One of the downsides to taking mostly digital photos is that we tend to print photos less often. As part of this project be sure to give your teen the opportunity to have some recent pictures printed – some to frame and others to tape up in a rotating display. Japanese masking tape (also called washi tape) comes in a mind‐boggling array of colors and patterns is easily removable from most surfaces and can be used in tons of ways (like in the photo display seen here). A set would make a lovely gift for your teen when this project is complete. Try a small DIY project.

Antique and modern accents pay tribute to tailoring. The globe is an 18th‐century sewing table and the framed piece above is a shirt made out of a folded map of London. Dittmar designed custom bedding and pillows to conjure the crisp look of ties and pocket squares. From show house to your house: If you're stuck in a decorating rut try playing with a theme in one of your bedrooms. It can be something bold – like a sports‐theme kid's room – or something more subtle like Dittmar's design. But by giving yourself a path to follow you'll have less trouble deciding on what pieces to use. The amazing art installation in this bathroom is by artist Michele Pred who uses airport‐confiscated scissors and knives in much of her work. The design team worked with Pred to create a specific installation for this space – a bathtub full of silver scissors snagged by the Transportation Security Administration.

Envision a deeply restorative space. The best way to begin any design project is with a clear vision of your hopes for the end result. Take a moment to ponder what your ideal bedroom space would look like and how it would feel – the scent the textures the sounds. Create as clear a picture as you possibly can and hold that in your mind as you move forward with the project. Clean the air. Air quality affects health and wellness and poor air quality can impact sleep. The easiest way to clean the air in your bedroom is simply to open your windows. Commit to letting fresh air into your bedroom for at least 10 minutes each day and the air quality is sure to improve. To take it a step further you may want to add several potted plants and an air purifier. Limit technology and remove emotional clutter. When you visualized your ideal bedroom I'd wager that it wasn't filled with clutter or the tangle of wires dangling from your laptop. Giving yourself a break from tech devices at night will help promote deeper rest and is probably a good idea healthwise as well. Also take a moment to consider the things you have stored in your bedroom. Are there boxes of bills and paperwork that make your stomach knot each time you see them? Piles of clothes that no longer fit workout tools you don't use or photos of friends you have a tense relationship with? All of these things can contribute to stress and insomnia so out they must go. Clean thoroughly and naturally. Often our bedrooms fall way down to the bottom of our cleaning to‐do list simply because not many others have to see these private spaces.

After attending approximately 30 weddings in the last couple of years I'm approaching the baby‐boom stage of life. And with that come nursery inquires from friends. No matter what anyone's style age or lifestyle is I recommend Jenny Lind–style cribs and beds. Their whimsical spool detailing can easily work in a traditional transitional or eclectic home. A white Jenny Lind crib pops against the nursery's purple flat‐panel wainscoting. Pink paisley pairs with white Jenny Lind single beds to create the bedroom of every little girl's dreams. Thanks to its simple design Jenny Lind furniture is easy to pair with vibrant patterns. The white crib chain‐link rug and whimsical Roman shade fabric in this nursery prove just that. A pair of Jenny Lind single beds contributes to the vintage feel of this sporty bedroom. With customized bunting a white Jenny Lind crib a pouf and a butterfly mobile Parker's nursery is bursting with personality. The functional Jenny Lind trundle acts as an extra bed for sleepovers. Featuring Delta's Jenny Lind crib this nursery is brimming with charm. Stark white bedding makes a contrasting statement as it dresses a classic navy Jenny Lind crib.

Try tailored and tucked‐in bunks. Without losing the getaway‐home element this room has a much more tailored look than most bunk rooms. The bedding is simple and tucked in tightly. The tone on tone of whites gives the room a clean and serene feel. Curtains are neatly stacked with a dense fabric. To get this look with a lighter fabric have the curtains lined with a heavier solid material to complement the pattern you are working with. Better yet give your guest bunkers a treat by lining the curtains with blackout fabric. Mix it up. Mismatched bedding can transform the feeling of a bunk room. When beds are snuggled into a small hallway or attic finding not a single matching sheet blanket or pillow brings you back to childhood when the cabin was heaven for old linens dishes and furniture that weren't being used at home. To create this look resist the urge to buy sets. See a pillow you like? Just grab it and continue your hunt. Visit antiques stores and look for old wool blankets and quilts. One trip to the dry cleaner and they're ready for bed.
