Show off your tilework. "We like to use frameless shower doors for a couple of reasons" says Mariette Barsoum of Divine Kitchens. "With a frameless door there's no visual separation which make the space larger. Plus unlike framed doors they don't hide the beautiful tilework in the shower. Frameless doors also sport a cleaner more modern look – and we like that". Make a small room feel larger. "I was inspired by the framework of this house and its secluded and forestlike surroundings" says Kimberly Arnold Fletcher of Spectrum Design Group. "My goal was to create an open feel and bring the outside into the master bathroom. The frameless door allowed me to not only provide a transparent look that mirrors the windows added to the space but it also made a very small room feel larger and more spacious".

Shagreen which is made from stingrays is a super‐exotic choice for wall tile. Sourced from Indonesia these tiles are used from the by‐products of rays that have been harvested for food. Many shower enclosures look prefab and clunky but not this one! Besides the modern glass look this system offers bathers full control of their shower's temperature and volume from outside and inside. Perfect for both young and old a glowing LED light indicates water temperature and an alloy valve prevents sudden changes in temperature preventing a shocking surprise (or worse a scald). These gorgeous polished pyrite tiles can be mixed and matched with different sizes and colors. Subway tiles have been popular for a while but how about mirrored subway tiles for a fresh twist? If you want to create a bath fit for a queen be sure to include this unforgettable "Chrysanthemum" pattern complete with inlaid mother of pearl. If you crave sleek style in the bath turn to fashion designer Jason Wu. His new line for Brizo includes this understated glass shelf.

Add a half‐wall to protect against splashes. Ideally an open shower requires at least a 6‐foot buffer zone on every side to avoid flooding the rest of the bath with water. But a half‐wall such as the one that divides this shower from the vanity can help to contain droplets. Consider a corner location if possible. Orient the shower in a corner that faces away from the other bathroom zones. Not only does this guard against spraying water but it also preserves some measure of privacy (more on that in a minute).

Use fancy little trays to collect and curate your bath items; place a few bath oils and soaps on one a cluster of votive candles on another. Potted plants are a wonderful way to add mystery and depth. Try ferns orchids or a palm. Mood lighting is key for the spa escape look so look beyond the standard choices for interesting light fixtures. I adore Moroccan hanging lanterns; hung alone or in a cluster they add a big punch of style and cast an amazing glow. Cultivate the feel of a five‐star European hotel with rich materials glossy finishes and a tightly edited black and white palette. Search vintage shops for a small glass‐front cabinet to use for towel storage. Paint it in the glossiest darkest black you can find then fill it with fluffy white towels.

Collect and curate interesting details – a giant seashell a small bust and real art on the walls will add a storied feel. Splurge on a few luxury bath items to display (and use). Stow all unsightly items behind closed doors or in boxes or bins. It's true that if your existing bath fixtures consist of a pink sink and lemon yellow tile you will be hard pressed to create the black and white palette this look calls for. If you have a bit more time and savings to invest in your bathroom makeover adding wallpaper or a dark paint color to the upper walls and white paneling below (less pricey than retiling) will go far. If you are considering replacing the sink having a vintage cabinet or table fitted with a simple sink bowl can be a creative solution. While you are at it remove that medicine cabinet and hang a pretty mirror instead.

Ensure proper drainage. Not only will you guard against damage from standing water but you'll also protect yourself from skidding on wet floors. Angle the shower floor slightly so that water flows toward the drain and think about adding a second drain for doubly effective siphoning. Select surfaces that can stand up to moisture. Even with careful attention to an open shower's design splashes and steam will escape. Outfit your bath with surfaces that hold their own against moisture: porcelain or glass tile metal stone solid surfacing engineered quartz and some woods. Avoid fabrics and other materials that are prone to mildew.

Want to let in more light? Try adhesive window films for more sun without sacrificing privacy. Replace the standard ceiling fixture with a classic drum pendant light on a dimmer switch. Add a piece of real furniture. An armchair (if you have the room) or a small gleaming wood or marble table is a good choice for the classic bath. Amp up the exotic touches and pay attention to the sensory experience to create a spalike ambience in your own bathroom. Put your overhead light on a dimmer. Everything looks better in soft light. Choose a few beautiful hand‐painted tiles and prop them up on your sink backsplash or hang them on the wall as art. Splurge on nice towels. I suggest supersoft and luxuriously big bath sheets as well as fringed and knotted hammam‐style towels to hang by the sink.

The dream bath: Organic modern. This look is all about texture so each surface should delight the senses. Keep color to a minimum focusing on white cream and natural wood tones. A tree stump stool by the tub fits perfectly with this look; pick up a ready‐made version or try crafting one yourself. If you choose metallic accents (for drawer pulls etc.) keep them in the warm family; brass or copper would be good choices. Hang a classic hotel‐style robe on a wall hook. Choose an unusual bath mat – bamboo cork or river stone. Wool and sheepskin hold up surprisingly well in damp conditions but it's best to keep them away from direct contact with drippy toes. On the other side of the room by the sink would be a better choice. Natural linen shades filter light beautifully and add a textural note.
