Unlike in a kitchen a living area or a den private papers and materials stay private in a bedroom and distractions tend to be fewer. The trick of course is to create an office that doesn't disrupt a bedroom's restful feel or take up more than its share of space. These homeowners and design pros have managed to come up with a happy middle ground. Take a look at how they made it work. A desk takes the place of a nightstand in this bedroom yet it blends in so smoothly that it doesn't immediately read as a work area. Keeping the finish and style consistent with the bed helps to integrate the two visually and the large piece of artwork mounted above takes some of the focus off the computer. This setup takes a similar tack. Trimming out the bulletin board with molding helps it to feel like a thoughtful part of the design rather than an incidental. Bedrooms are often designed so that windows flank the most natural spot to orient the bed which can make furniture placement tricky. If yours is the same way choose a low desk that won't obscure the sunlight and the views. The key to this bedroom office: the glam mirrored desk which blends into the space because of its reflectivity. Although it's perfectly functional stylish accents mask its workhorse side. The key to this bedroom office: the glam mirrored desk which blends into the space because of its reflectivity. Although it's perfectly functional stylish accents mask its workhorse side. If wall space is limited go vertical. Custom or prefab shelves which you can paint the same color as the walls maximize every inch.

Decide which furniture to keep. As you are going through the room note which pieces you want to keep and which will be sold or given away. But before buying anything new consider updating existing furniture with fresh paint or knobs and look around the rest of the house (including in the attic and the basement) for forgotten treasures. Shop for new items. Look for pieces that can also be used in a first apartment (or dorm room) to get the most bang for your buck. Small side tables cushions throw blankets lamps and small‐scale armchairs will all be most welcome in those first digs away from home. Go on a "cool junk" hunt together. Make a date to hit a flea market or antiques and collectibles fair to see what you can find. Bring cash (only as much as you want to spend) measurements of key areas and a dolly or cart to carry home your finds. Wire storage lockers like the ones shown here are superversatile – use them for everything from shoes and scarves to craft supplies and books. Incorporate photos of friends. One of the downsides to taking mostly digital photos is that we tend to print photos less often. As part of this project be sure to give your teen the opportunity to have some recent pictures printed – some to frame and others to tape up in a rotating display. Japanese masking tape (also called washi tape) comes in a mind‐boggling array of colors and patterns is easily removable from most surfaces and can be used in tons of ways (like in the photo display seen here). A set would make a lovely gift for your teen when this project is complete. Try a small DIY project.

You can find old painted shutters at any salvage shop. Just remember to seal them before using them as a headboard. Unpainted shutters add to the earthy exotic feel of this room. A large framed piece of corkboard does double duty as a bulletin board and as a ... well as a headboard. Hurray for pallets! They are often free (check first before taking) and they make excellent places to hang stuff on as well. Old fireplace mantels are salvage shop treasures that frame a simple upholstered headboard beautifully. In many places earthquakes prevent hanging anything remotely heavy over the bed (lest it fall on someone's head during the next tembler). This fabric art looks like an extension of the plain nearly invisible headboard here and adds a danger‐free way to decorate the wall.

Here the classic silver vase looks great but I favor a simple glass vase as it catches light beautifully and goes with anything. Flea markets and yard sales are great hunting grounds for bargain antiques. Personal treasures. Your bedroom should be personal to you so be sure to display some of your treasured keepsakes. The glass dome on the bedside here could be used for a favorite ornament or maybe flowers from the first bouquet your sweetheart ever bought you. Bedside classics. Bedside books are accessories in their own right. I'm not suggesting you only read attractive books but stack a few old classics carefully chosen from a vintage bookstore and you have a gorgeous arrangement. A structured wall light. Wall lights save space on your bedside table for that pile of classic novels. Remember to keep everything in scale though – these would look lost on a big blank wall above your bed. Above‐the‐bed artwork. Without a huge ornate headboard or an architectural feature chances are you will need something above your bed. Pictures are wonderful but be sure they are themed. I like perfectly spaced symmetrical arrangements (rows of three work really well) which fit with traditional styling perfectly. Random shapes sizes and frame types also can look good especially if you are going for a more rustic feel but they're harder to get right. Just be sure to keep with a theme and keep the spacing equal. Something playful. I love to add a touch of humor to my styling and accessories are the perfect vehicle. This fish cushion makes me smile. You could also use a framed picture that introduces an element of fun to your room.

Sullivan Building & Design Group made the most of this space with an interior renovation that made a bedroom with built‐in beds and book nooks. An all‐white palette keeps things from looking cluttered. A custom bed with built‐in drawers and storage makes the most of this small space beneath the eaves. Built‐ins and wall‐mounted lights are great choices in supertight spaces. An attic conversion doesn't have to have a country look. This space by Catalin David shows that an attic bedroom can easily take a contemporary turn. The addition of skylights makes the space feel less cramped. Follow the lead of Gast Architects and treat sloped ceilings like walls by wallpapering them in a pretty petite print; here the treatment softens the look of the angles. A strong wall color paired with a crisp white ceiling and trim accentuates the angle of the roofline in this springlike bedroom. A built‐in window seat is a great way to take advantage of a nook beneath the window in a converted attic space. Two twin beds are tucked under the eaves of this room decorated by Alix J. Bragg. To make the most of the small space bedside lighting is wall mounted and under‐the‐bed baskets offer extra storage.

Trundle Beds Double Down on Style. I've always been partial to trundle beds. My childhood bedroom had a white iron daybed with a pop‐up trundle underneath and friends who slept over thought it was the coolest thing to have a "secret" bed that pulled out at a moment's notice. Originally designed as a sleeping pad for servants who remained by the family's side during the night trundles have evolved into a time‐honored solution for maximizing overnight quarters without taking up undue space. This trundle expands the functionality and spices up the design of a spare slim guestroom/office. The desk seems as though it would be more useful for storing nighttime reading than for doing actual work – you'd have to sit cross‐legged to type or write. Trundles don't always have to be concealed beneath a bedskirt or behind a drawer front. In this cheery eclectic bedroom the bright green of the bed frame is carried to the trundle box beneath left on display for another jolt of color. Here's another trundle right in the open. I like seeing the tiny hint of royal blue to break up all of the wood. What makes better use of space than bunk beds? Bunk beds with a pullout mattress underneath. This technique works especially well in vacation houses or for families who have relatives and friends visit frequently. Trundles beneath these twin beds double the room's sleeping capacity from two to four – a pretty nifty trick. Alternatively you could use the trundles for storage. Sleek and elegant this trundle blends so smoothly with the striated wood frame of the daybed that the handles are the only giveaway it's there at all. A trundle on rails pulls out and slides in smoothly and it's guaranteed to stay in place. What a great idea!

Antique and modern accents pay tribute to tailoring. The globe is an 18th‐century sewing table and the framed piece above is a shirt made out of a folded map of London. Dittmar designed custom bedding and pillows to conjure the crisp look of ties and pocket squares. From show house to your house: If you're stuck in a decorating rut try playing with a theme in one of your bedrooms. It can be something bold – like a sports‐theme kid's room – or something more subtle like Dittmar's design. But by giving yourself a path to follow you'll have less trouble deciding on what pieces to use. The amazing art installation in this bathroom is by artist Michele Pred who uses airport‐confiscated scissors and knives in much of her work. The design team worked with Pred to create a specific installation for this space – a bathtub full of silver scissors snagged by the Transportation Security Administration.

A bedroom is a very private space. Hotels know this and add a beautifully wrapped chocolate on the bedside table for that personal touch. The bedside table can tell a lot about a person. I love decorating these spaces because they are so personal. Bedside tables are important because they're the last thing you see when turning in for the night and the first thing you see when you wake. These small intimate spaces have to pack a visual punch by adding color and texture. At the same time they serve practical needs like holding our alarm clocks and eyeglasses. They come in all shapes and sizes different colors and styles. I've been asked many times about accessorizing these spaces. Here are some ideas for what I call the bedside vignette or in simple terms nightstands and the stuff we put on them. This is the area where you can really make a statement with lamps. I find that square lampshades or round lampshades that are 14 inches or less in diameter work best against a wall. Drawers are always great for storing things you need but don't want to get up for. I love this alternative lighting detail instead of a table lamp. A hanging chandelier on either side of the bed provides beautiful symmetry and frees the nightstand for other personal accessories. A pendant works just as well as a chandelier visually. The light wattage is lower though so I suggest using a pendant light in combination with can lighting. Stacked books look great with their colorful binding facing the room and are also good for elevating alarm clocks. This beautiful vignette is perfectly balanced with a lamp family photos fresh flowers and a candle.

Air plants and succulents are having a real moment in design and they have the benefit of being easy to care for. If you and your teen are in the mood to tackle a crafty project I love this DIY air plant terrarium tutorial on Houzz. It's chic and easy the best combination! Update the homework zone. Ground the work area with a creative and useful chalkboard wall or include a large bulletin board for pinning up lists photos and inspiration. Pay attention to the ergonomics of the space as well making sure the chair and desk are at the right height. Good task lighting is essential and any additional storage you can squeeze into the space will help maintain order. At least consider a small filing crate and a basket for recycling. Add an entryway. In my experience most messes come from the junk we put down as soon as we enter a space. Help prevent the big chaotic pileup before it begins with a few preventative measures: A coat tree or wall hooks will hopefully keep those coats and bags off the floor and a dresser or table placed near the door can be a drop zone for mail keys and other odds and ends. Provide hangout space. If you have the room bring in a retired couch from the basement or attic. If space is tight try a fluffy area rug with a few big floor cushions instead. Add an unexpected touch. Every room should have something that immediately catches your eye or makes you smile and your teen's room is no exception. Make the room glow with a cluster of cheap and chic paper lanterns scoop up a funky neon sign or a vintage marquee letter at the flea market or frame a portrait of a favorite pet. Give hobbies and interests pride of place.
