Creating an area above a large bed for childhood keepsakes trinkets and books will make the room feel more cozy and childlike. If you're worried about a big bed taking up too much space consider painting the wall behind the bed a nice dark color. This will give the illusion of depth and make the room appear larger. Another great trick to add the illusion of space is to use lots of mirrors. I love the brightness the two mirrors flanking this large bed bring to the room. If you have the square footage lining the walls with multiple queen‐size beds is a great way to sleep a crowd. This room is perfect for slumber parties and late‐night pillow fights. This space looks like it was just transformed into a more mature design. The map keeps it playful but you'll be happy to hang on to the furniture long after your child has left for college. When choosing furniture go for timeless clean pieces your child will be happy to keep well into adulthood. Keeping the room colorful as with this bright pink accent wall will prevent the space from becoming too grown‐up. This cute nautical‐themed room would be great for a growing boy. The materials and patterns feel youthful but classic so it works as an instant guest room when necessary.

This bedroom with its liberal dose of aqua blue and spring green is such a happy space. I would love to curl up in that green chair with a good book – even the dreariest day couldn't bring me down. Another bonus to using such vibrant colors is that this room needs no additional artwork or accessories. It's very clean and simple but in no way dull or lifeless. These perky blues and the leafy‐green color work well together in small doses such as on fabrics accessories or painted furniture. The lighter cucumber green is a great choice for the walls. Clockwise from top left (all from Sherwin‐Williams): Mariner SW 6766 Cucumber SW 6722 Oceanside SW 6496 and Picnic SW 6731. Turquoise is a popular color right now and here it is paired with another color of the moment – intense orange. These two colors are opposite each other on the color wheel making them a striking and attention‐getting combo. But because the walls ceiling and floor are white the effect is cool instead of cacophonous. Punches of bright blue and orange used sparingly perhaps through a thick vertical stripe painted on the walls or easily changed‐out bedding look fantastic against a white backdrop. Clockwise from top left: Light My Fire AC211‐5 and Cool Turquoise KM3238‐2 both from Kelly Moore and Castaway DE 5738 and Tangerine Dream DE 5160 both from Dunn Edwards.

Trundle Beds Double Down on Style. I've always been partial to trundle beds. My childhood bedroom had a white iron daybed with a pop‐up trundle underneath and friends who slept over thought it was the coolest thing to have a "secret" bed that pulled out at a moment's notice. Originally designed as a sleeping pad for servants who remained by the family's side during the night trundles have evolved into a time‐honored solution for maximizing overnight quarters without taking up undue space. This trundle expands the functionality and spices up the design of a spare slim guestroom/office. The desk seems as though it would be more useful for storing nighttime reading than for doing actual work – you'd have to sit cross‐legged to type or write. Trundles don't always have to be concealed beneath a bedskirt or behind a drawer front. In this cheery eclectic bedroom the bright green of the bed frame is carried to the trundle box beneath left on display for another jolt of color. Here's another trundle right in the open. I like seeing the tiny hint of royal blue to break up all of the wood. What makes better use of space than bunk beds? Bunk beds with a pullout mattress underneath. This technique works especially well in vacation houses or for families who have relatives and friends visit frequently. Trundles beneath these twin beds double the room's sleeping capacity from two to four – a pretty nifty trick. Alternatively you could use the trundles for storage. Sleek and elegant this trundle blends so smoothly with the striated wood frame of the daybed that the handles are the only giveaway it's there at all. A trundle on rails pulls out and slides in smoothly and it's guaranteed to stay in place. What a great idea!

Envision a deeply restorative space. The best way to begin any design project is with a clear vision of your hopes for the end result. Take a moment to ponder what your ideal bedroom space would look like and how it would feel – the scent the textures the sounds. Create as clear a picture as you possibly can and hold that in your mind as you move forward with the project. Clean the air. Air quality affects health and wellness and poor air quality can impact sleep. The easiest way to clean the air in your bedroom is simply to open your windows. Commit to letting fresh air into your bedroom for at least 10 minutes each day and the air quality is sure to improve. To take it a step further you may want to add several potted plants and an air purifier. Limit technology and remove emotional clutter. When you visualized your ideal bedroom I'd wager that it wasn't filled with clutter or the tangle of wires dangling from your laptop. Giving yourself a break from tech devices at night will help promote deeper rest and is probably a good idea healthwise as well. Also take a moment to consider the things you have stored in your bedroom. Are there boxes of bills and paperwork that make your stomach knot each time you see them? Piles of clothes that no longer fit workout tools you don't use or photos of friends you have a tense relationship with? All of these things can contribute to stress and insomnia so out they must go. Clean thoroughly and naturally. Often our bedrooms fall way down to the bottom of our cleaning to‐do list simply because not many others have to see these private spaces.

Don't overcrowd the space. Attic bedrooms are generally tighter spaces and if there are sloped ceilings the room can feel claustrophobic with too many furnishings. Add only what you need – less is definitely more in this case. Consider a two‐tone paint job. "Painting is always tricky when working with an attic space as the walls are often shortened and the ceiling space is greater than in most rooms” says Heron. "For a cozy feeling consider painting the walls a different color than the ceiling.” Or trick the eye by using all one color. "If you want the space to feel more spacious paint the ceiling and wall the same color but keep it to a light neutral or white” advises Heron. Nix the overhead lights. "Forget pot lights in the attic” says Heron. "Opt instead for table lamps or wall sconces; uplighting is a great way to play up a dramatic roofline".

Notice also the delicate layers of pattern in the tone‐on‐tone wallpaper. A rod (versus chain) installation creates a crisp and somewhat masculine aesthetic that works very well with these drum shades. This eclectic bedroom stretches the limits of minimalism by blending the pendants into the wall. The result is pure function as the aesthetic is more about what is not there. Now this is what I meant by "secret weapon." This otherwise simple bedroom is kicked into high gear with these fabulous pendants. When design goes outside the box magic happens. A guest bedroom is a great place in which to sport a bedside pendant that is unique and memorable. These great pendants look like fancy dinner napkins. The result is a whimsical one‐of‐a‐kind environment for a lucky houseguest.

However as I often remind myself that's no reason to settle for sloppy sleeping quarters. Here's a step‐by‐step guide to a well‐dressed pretty and polished bed. If you've got another great tip share it in the Comments below! Break out the iron. If you're anything like me you'd rather walk through Death Valley at high noon in a parka than put your iron to its intended use. (Full disclosure: The last time I unearthed mine it had cobwebs on it.) But pressed linens are crisp linens so face your nemesis. A standard ironing board is too small to handle sheets with ease – cover an inexpensive folding table or even a large sheet of plywood with heatproof foam or batting to give you more surface area to work with. Don't forget the bed skirt and shams while you're at it. Center and straighten the bedskirt. If your bed style doesn't require a skirt you can skip this step though you may want to invest in a box‐spring cover if your box spring is exposed. Pull the mattress pad smooth. Nothing ruins bedtime comfort faster than a lumpy bottom layer and pads are notorious for bunching in the center of the bed. Tuck the fitted sheet tightly. For optimal fit use an extra‐deep sheet if you have a pillow‐top or an especially tall mattress; otherwise a standard size should work fine. Pull it taut and tuck the edges beneath the mattress. Drape the flat sheet. Now the tricky part begins. Center the flat sheet on the bed with equal overhang on either side. Align the top edge with the top edge of the mattress.

If you're worried about a big bed taking up too much space consider painting the wall behind the bed a nice dark color. This will give the illusion of depth and make the room appear larger. This sleek headboard has a secret: It includes sliding panels that open to reveal a hidden cabinet behind. If you can't find what you're looking for and have the budget to do so consider a custom‐built headboard like this example. Different headboard designs also come extended in width with attached drawers. These drawers are handy because they corral storage while acting as built‐in bedside tables. This design features one simple drawer for the side of the bed that can make all the difference. Consider large freestanding pieces that essentially double as storage space and headboard. These are especially convenient if you're converting a space into a bedroom that doesn't contain a closet. These pieces will ground the bed while providing ample space for clothing and necessities. Here is an example of a much larger and likely custom‐built piece that acts as a headboard as well as storage. I assume there is closet space on the other side while the side we see comes complete with shelves and cabinetry. Adding upholstered squares makes the piece look like a more authentic headboard.
