In typical Draper fashion it was girly but still simple and refined. Now that Sally is getting into her tweens and teens her rebellious side is starting to pop up. Sally may be a a girly girl for at least the beginning of her tween years but as she starts to develop her own style (and delves into the wild style of the early '70s) bold patterns and color may start to make an appearance in her room. Pale pink walls can be replaced with a vibrant (but tasteful) lavender and a bright pink duvet can cover up the old floral bedding. A graphic rug gives this bedoom the final dose of that great mod style.

Interior designer Letitia Holloway of Myers Designs and Debbie Wiener owner of Designing Solutions are well versed in this transformation and the complications that come with it. If you're thinking of turning your basement into an extra bedroom their tips and tricks can help. Insulate. The last thing you want is a noisy – and chilly – bedroom. "Spend a little extra and add good insulation to the walls” says Wiener. "One good night's sleep and you'll know you spent your money wisely.” Create emergency escape routes. Before beginning construction check your local building codes to learn what your basement's escape requirements are. The necessary routes can also enhance the room. "Installing large upper windows not only enhances the view but provides a great escape route” says Holloway. Look for the charm. Save money by leaving beams exposed or the ceiling unfinished – it will give your new cozy bedroom a feeling of distinction. Add visual height. Unfinished ceilings can also help add height to a space especially when painted a dark color. "Paint the ceiling dark and finish the rest of the room off as you would normally” says Holloway. "This type of ceiling works with a variety of aesthetics and the unfinished effect makes it feel higher than a drop or drywall style would.” Benjamin Moore's Baby Seal Black is one of Holloway's go‐to paint colors. Configure your layout wisely. Place the bed against an interior wall in the room. "Exterior walls change temperature meaning your bed will be cold in the winter and possibly through summer if your basement is below grade” says Wiener.

Air plants and succulents are having a real moment in design and they have the benefit of being easy to care for. If you and your teen are in the mood to tackle a crafty project I love this DIY air plant terrarium tutorial on Houzz. It's chic and easy the best combination! Update the homework zone. Ground the work area with a creative and useful chalkboard wall or include a large bulletin board for pinning up lists photos and inspiration. Pay attention to the ergonomics of the space as well making sure the chair and desk are at the right height. Good task lighting is essential and any additional storage you can squeeze into the space will help maintain order. At least consider a small filing crate and a basket for recycling. Add an entryway. In my experience most messes come from the junk we put down as soon as we enter a space. Help prevent the big chaotic pileup before it begins with a few preventative measures: A coat tree or wall hooks will hopefully keep those coats and bags off the floor and a dresser or table placed near the door can be a drop zone for mail keys and other odds and ends. Provide hangout space. If you have the room bring in a retired couch from the basement or attic. If space is tight try a fluffy area rug with a few big floor cushions instead. Add an unexpected touch. Every room should have something that immediately catches your eye or makes you smile and your teen's room is no exception. Make the room glow with a cluster of cheap and chic paper lanterns scoop up a funky neon sign or a vintage marquee letter at the flea market or frame a portrait of a favorite pet. Give hobbies and interests pride of place.

Sullivan Building & Design Group made the most of this space with an interior renovation that made a bedroom with built‐in beds and book nooks. An all‐white palette keeps things from looking cluttered. A custom bed with built‐in drawers and storage makes the most of this small space beneath the eaves. Built‐ins and wall‐mounted lights are great choices in supertight spaces. An attic conversion doesn't have to have a country look. This space by Catalin David shows that an attic bedroom can easily take a contemporary turn. The addition of skylights makes the space feel less cramped. Follow the lead of Gast Architects and treat sloped ceilings like walls by wallpapering them in a pretty petite print; here the treatment softens the look of the angles. A strong wall color paired with a crisp white ceiling and trim accentuates the angle of the roofline in this springlike bedroom. A built‐in window seat is a great way to take advantage of a nook beneath the window in a converted attic space. Two twin beds are tucked under the eaves of this room decorated by Alix J. Bragg. To make the most of the small space bedside lighting is wall mounted and under‐the‐bed baskets offer extra storage.

However as I often remind myself that's no reason to settle for sloppy sleeping quarters. Here's a step‐by‐step guide to a well‐dressed pretty and polished bed. If you've got another great tip share it in the Comments below! Break out the iron. If you're anything like me you'd rather walk through Death Valley at high noon in a parka than put your iron to its intended use. (Full disclosure: The last time I unearthed mine it had cobwebs on it.) But pressed linens are crisp linens so face your nemesis. A standard ironing board is too small to handle sheets with ease – cover an inexpensive folding table or even a large sheet of plywood with heatproof foam or batting to give you more surface area to work with. Don't forget the bed skirt and shams while you're at it. Center and straighten the bedskirt. If your bed style doesn't require a skirt you can skip this step though you may want to invest in a box‐spring cover if your box spring is exposed. Pull the mattress pad smooth. Nothing ruins bedtime comfort faster than a lumpy bottom layer and pads are notorious for bunching in the center of the bed. Tuck the fitted sheet tightly. For optimal fit use an extra‐deep sheet if you have a pillow‐top or an especially tall mattress; otherwise a standard size should work fine. Pull it taut and tuck the edges beneath the mattress. Drape the flat sheet. Now the tricky part begins. Center the flat sheet on the bed with equal overhang on either side. Align the top edge with the top edge of the mattress.

Grab center stage. Natalie Younger loves wallpaper. She found her perfect client with this project: The entire house was inspired by graphic prints and bold colors. Grab center stage. Natalie Younger loves wallpaper. She found her perfect client with this project: The entire house was inspired by graphic prints and bold colors. "This paper was installed as a feature wall and grounded the rest of the room's lighter tones by adding a little drama " she says. "I designed a custom velvet platform bed that was kept low to the ground in order to allow the wall to take center stage. The chandelier over the bed added to the mood and the crystal knob details on all the furniture rounded out that glitzy glamour feel." Accent the positive. This bedroom is part of an open loft so Valerie Pasquiou was looking to give it a bit of a cozy feel and some softness by bringing an "un‐overwhelming accent wall into the room with a hint of femininity " she says. "The overall idea was also to keep a light and crisp fresh feel to the room." Focus on texture. "When you have a really monochromatic bed and everything feels very calm and toned down you want something to be a focal point” says Tineke Triggs of Artistic Designs for Living. "This wallpaper brought texture and depth to the room.” Impress your guests. Interior designer Tara Seawright uses wallpaper in a lot of her projects.

Although I mentioned not wanting to buy expensive art to get tripped over I have no problem with it being displayed on the wall. The piece shown in this image is so gorgeous and really sets the mood for the room. Nightstand space comes at a premium. Books clocks and phones all vie for room. Bedding is expensive especially once you find the perfect duvet pillow shams throw pillows and so on. I've often thought of a neutral color scheme as being boring and safe. When I think of custom drapery my mind often envisions heavy fabric overpowering a room. Area rugs are often used to tie a space together. I love how this rug is the room's focal point. Generally speaking most nightstands are round or square. Who says you have to follow those rules?

This navy and pink room belongs to the youngest daughter – who was 3 at the time. Keim wanted to design a space that would reflect the girl's sweet and energetic personality and fit the style of the rest of the home. Keim and the girl's mother both fell in love with the wallpaper which dictated the rest of the room's style and color palette. The client trusted Keim so she was given a lot of room to experiment. While she played around with color and pattern she carefully choose the furniture so that it would last each girl into her teens and beyond. "I would use those pieces!" she says. The family's 10‐year‐old daughter loves turquoise so Keim chose a complementary shade of peachy‐orange to help it stand out. "As with most jobs I take their favorite color and make it the accent color " says Keim. "It usually pops more that way." A custom headboard grass cloth wall covering patterned pillows and classic lamps add visual texture and depth to the vibrant space. The tree bookcase was especially exciting for the daughter and she also loves the special pencil set on her desk. The vintage chair was reupholstered in scraps from Keim's showroom for an eclectic one‐of‐a‐kind piece. The girls share a large study a playroom and closets outside of the bedrooms so Keim didn't have to integrate a lot of storage or play space into these rooms.
