A bedroom is a very private space. Hotels know this and add a beautifully wrapped chocolate on the bedside table for that personal touch. The bedside table can tell a lot about a person. I love decorating these spaces because they are so personal. Bedside tables are important because they're the last thing you see when turning in for the night and the first thing you see when you wake. These small intimate spaces have to pack a visual punch by adding color and texture. At the same time they serve practical needs like holding our alarm clocks and eyeglasses. They come in all shapes and sizes different colors and styles. I've been asked many times about accessorizing these spaces. Here are some ideas for what I call the bedside vignette or in simple terms nightstands and the stuff we put on them. This is the area where you can really make a statement with lamps. I find that square lampshades or round lampshades that are 14 inches or less in diameter work best against a wall. Drawers are always great for storing things you need but don't want to get up for. I love this alternative lighting detail instead of a table lamp. A hanging chandelier on either side of the bed provides beautiful symmetry and frees the nightstand for other personal accessories. A pendant works just as well as a chandelier visually. The light wattage is lower though so I suggest using a pendant light in combination with can lighting. Stacked books look great with their colorful binding facing the room and are also good for elevating alarm clocks. This beautiful vignette is perfectly balanced with a lamp family photos fresh flowers and a candle.

This sleek headboard has a secret: It includes sliding panels that open to reveal a hidden cabinet behind. If you can't find what you're looking for and have the budget to do so consider a custom‐built headboard like this example. Different headboard designs also come extended in width with attached drawers. These drawers are handy because they corral storage while acting as built‐in bedside tables. This design features one simple drawer for the side of the bed that can make all the difference. Consider large freestanding pieces that essentially double as storage space and headboard. These are especially convenient if you're converting a space into a bedroom that doesn't contain a closet. These pieces will ground the bed while providing ample space for clothing and necessities. Here is an example of a much larger and likely custom‐built piece that acts as a headboard as well as storage. I assume there is closet space on the other side while the side we see comes complete with shelves and cabinetry. Adding upholstered squares makes the piece look like a more authentic headboard.

Since the Victorian era what we need in the bedroom has changed very little. We need essentially the same pieces – bed bedside tables clothes storage. And we like essentially the same aesthetic – comfortable peaceful even luxurious. Indeed we may still find the fabrics and wallpapers of that period attractive. Victorian staples such as freestanding wardrobes marble‐topped washstands and folding screens can be reinvented for modern bedrooms while still retaining the Victorian feel. Keep reading to learn how to turn a Victorian bedroom into a personal space you'll love spending time in. It's worth noting that Victorian ladies in their country houses often spent the entire morning in bed reading and writing letters. I'm not sure I'd get away with that but if I did I would want the finest linen and lace to surround me – just like them. Besides the bed the wardrobe would undoubtedly be the largest piece of furniture in a Victorian bedroom. The most popular versions had a mirror in the center cupboard and double‐width storage on either side. Traditionally wardrobes were made of dark varnished wood – a rather large and somber feature for today's tastes. But you can often pick one up cheaply and achieve great effects by stripping and painting it. Although not always a four‐poster (even though they were popular) Victorian beds often had draperies made from light fabric with matching curtains on the windows. Matching draperies and window dressing adorn this French‐inspired room without the four‐poster bed. Note the screen in the corner – these were hugely popular in Victorian bedrooms. Traditionally used to hide unsightly items (or maybe for the lady to dress behind) the screen today serves as a wonderful way to change the contours of the room.

Leave your shoes at the door. Now that your bedroom is clutter‐free and clean it's time to commit to keeping it that way. Start a no‐shoes policy – in your whole house if you can but at least in the bedroom. Place a table or basket outside your bedroom door to remind you to drop work materials cell phones and other gadgets before entering your new zone of calm. Create an organic bed. If you are in need of a new mattress (and can afford to spring for it) by all means go for one of the wonderful organic versions on the market today. But if not that doesn't mean you can't green up your bed. Try topping your mattress with a natural mattress pad and adding organic pillows and sheets. Organic goods are so mainstream now they can be found at all price points. Consider the walls and floors. While it does take more effort than any of the previous steps addressing your walls and floors is an important part of creating a more ecofriendly bedroom. If you are looking to change the wall color seek out paint containing low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If you have old peeling paint that may contain lead use caution and seek professional guidance for the best way to cover it. For the floor I recommend choosing hard flooring over wall‐to‐wall carpeting which is notoriously difficult to clean and tends to contain VOCs. If you already have wall‐to‐wall carpeting in place you can choose to have it removed or simply cover much of it with a natural fiber area rug. Choose the right color palette for your needs.

After attending approximately 30 weddings in the last couple of years I'm approaching the baby‐boom stage of life. And with that come nursery inquires from friends. No matter what anyone's style age or lifestyle is I recommend Jenny Lind–style cribs and beds. Their whimsical spool detailing can easily work in a traditional transitional or eclectic home. A white Jenny Lind crib pops against the nursery's purple flat‐panel wainscoting. Pink paisley pairs with white Jenny Lind single beds to create the bedroom of every little girl's dreams. Thanks to its simple design Jenny Lind furniture is easy to pair with vibrant patterns. The white crib chain‐link rug and whimsical Roman shade fabric in this nursery prove just that. A pair of Jenny Lind single beds contributes to the vintage feel of this sporty bedroom. With customized bunting a white Jenny Lind crib a pouf and a butterfly mobile Parker's nursery is bursting with personality. The functional Jenny Lind trundle acts as an extra bed for sleepovers. Featuring Delta's Jenny Lind crib this nursery is brimming with charm. Stark white bedding makes a contrasting statement as it dresses a classic navy Jenny Lind crib.

While many dressing tables are fussy frilly or just too girly for my taste here I've gathered some of my favorite modern‐looking dressing tables to share with you. Whether you're planning to set up a dressing table in your bedroom in the bathroom or nearby these ideas will surely inspire your space. If you're on the lookout for a dressing table and crave sleek lines the deco design of the table shown here with its wood finish and simple design speaks to those of us with a modern taste. This dressing table in a room adjacent to the bedroom is glamorous without being fussy. If you're considering using a similar setup for your dressing area painting the two spaces the same color will unify the rooms. If you crave color consider purchasing an older dressing table and painting it to fit your needs. If a matching chair isn't included in the deal buy one that fits well with the table and paint it to match. The gorgeous natural light in this bathroom makes it the perfect space for a small dressing table. Medicine cabinet–style mirrors above the dressing table provide storage and give this dressing table a built‐in look. A dressing table chair is the perfect place for a nice bright splash of color. If your prefer to keep things monochromatic upholstering the dressing table chair in the same shade as the wall will make a simple statement.

The diva isn't interested in the ordinary. She wants a bedroom that makes a statement as loud and clear as she does herself. Her eye is honed for unusual finds like a fabulous antique headboard and a classic Louis chair stamped with a face and splashed in lime green. An eclectic space gets her creative juices flowing. Creating an impact is second nature to the diva. A room almost entirely in hot pink? The diva does not hesitate to approve a bold color scheme. In fact why would she stop at the walls? The diva never goes halfway – she ensures that the ceiling is in on the act too. A diva knows that a room in all black exudes edgy drama so you'd better believe she is all for it. The diva knows the talents and ways of the past can teach her multitudes so she is no stranger to antiques. She mixes them in accordingly proud of her one‐of‐a‐kind finds. The diva travels all over the world so she is not about to have a bedroom without an incredible view. If she's a superdiva she likely has several of these bedrooms with a view in all sorts of spectacular places.

In typical Draper fashion it was girly but still simple and refined. Now that Sally is getting into her tweens and teens her rebellious side is starting to pop up. Sally may be a a girly girl for at least the beginning of her tween years but as she starts to develop her own style (and delves into the wild style of the early '70s) bold patterns and color may start to make an appearance in her room. Pale pink walls can be replaced with a vibrant (but tasteful) lavender and a bright pink duvet can cover up the old floral bedding. A graphic rug gives this bedoom the final dose of that great mod style.

Sullivan Building & Design Group made the most of this space with an interior renovation that made a bedroom with built‐in beds and book nooks. An all‐white palette keeps things from looking cluttered. A custom bed with built‐in drawers and storage makes the most of this small space beneath the eaves. Built‐ins and wall‐mounted lights are great choices in supertight spaces. An attic conversion doesn't have to have a country look. This space by Catalin David shows that an attic bedroom can easily take a contemporary turn. The addition of skylights makes the space feel less cramped. Follow the lead of Gast Architects and treat sloped ceilings like walls by wallpapering them in a pretty petite print; here the treatment softens the look of the angles. A strong wall color paired with a crisp white ceiling and trim accentuates the angle of the roofline in this springlike bedroom. A built‐in window seat is a great way to take advantage of a nook beneath the window in a converted attic space. Two twin beds are tucked under the eaves of this room decorated by Alix J. Bragg. To make the most of the small space bedside lighting is wall mounted and under‐the‐bed baskets offer extra storage.
