This sleek headboard has a secret: It includes sliding panels that open to reveal a hidden cabinet behind. If you can't find what you're looking for and have the budget to do so consider a custom‐built headboard like this example. Different headboard designs also come extended in width with attached drawers. These drawers are handy because they corral storage while acting as built‐in bedside tables. This design features one simple drawer for the side of the bed that can make all the difference. Consider large freestanding pieces that essentially double as storage space and headboard. These are especially convenient if you're converting a space into a bedroom that doesn't contain a closet. These pieces will ground the bed while providing ample space for clothing and necessities. Here is an example of a much larger and likely custom‐built piece that acts as a headboard as well as storage. I assume there is closet space on the other side while the side we see comes complete with shelves and cabinetry. Adding upholstered squares makes the piece look like a more authentic headboard.

I'm advocating breaking one of my design rules. Well I don't really believe in strict design rules but generally I try to keep big investment pieces (like beds) neutral solid and classic and bring in prints patterns bolder colors and trendy fabrics via less permanent items like rugs throw pillows duvet covers and window treatments. However these gorgeous patterned headboards have been screaming for my attention and I cannot ignore them any longer. Would you sleep beneath a patterned headboard? If so what kind of textile or pattern would you use? Let me know in the Comments section! Go bold and go for height – dynamic fabrics and exaggerated verticality on a headboard can change the entire feeling of a room. These brilliant textiles add to the Moroccan style of this home and the wall behind them painted up to chair‐rail height tricks the eye distorting how we perceive the colors and proportions. Extend the headboard to new heights to show off a beautiful fabric on it and your shams. It would have been a design travesty not to show off this beautiful suzani fabric. Match a sham or another pillow to the headboard. This will give the bedscape a continuous look vertically like these damask‐pattern shams do. To tie a larger area to the bed extend the headboard behind nightstands. A bold trellis pattern grounds this bed with the appropriate scale. You don't have to use fabric to execute this idea. At the Upward Bound House interior designer Vanessa De Vargas used wallpaper to create the look of an extended headboard. You can also use a special traditional fabric. Design Sponge blogger Grace Bonney helped educate the masses about traditional Mexican Otomi embroidery with her famous DIY headboard.

A classic serpentine chest of drawers holds a crystal lamp a small sculpture and fresh flowers. Also included here is a small piece of art in dreamy bedroom colors. Art does not have to be hung on a wall. Leaning small artworks against the wall provides a layered look. A step table is a great option beside a bed because it allows layers of surface area. A lamp books art water and fresh flowers all fit on this versatile piece. Notice how the color of the step table adds to the room's palette. A petite tray table with a small drawer has just enough space for a colorful lamp fresh flowers and a small jewelry box. Boxes of any style are great for holding earrings and necklaces taken off just before bed. This homemade bedside table consists of vintage suitcases on blocks. It's a creative and visual win for this room. Notice that the suitcases are on the low side allowing for an adjustable lamp and a full view of the window. All the bedside basics fit onto a tray that provides a flat surface. Consider a wall‐mounted table for the tiniest of spaces. There's just enough room for an adjustable lamp art and an alarm clock. A beautiful white chest of drawers holds a lamp in the center a plant to the left and an alarm clock. Notice the federal‐style mirror to the side of the lamp creating a layered bedside vignette.

Tuck it under a low ceiling. A sloped ceiling helps to occupy some of the visual space that a tall headboard and piles of pillows would. Buttress it with furniture. This bed backs up to an integrated shelf and bench unit that makes the long narrow space seem snug. Orienting the bed against a wall also enhances the enveloping feel. Keep the scale large. In a tiny room even a double or queen‐size bed will feel massive and oversize scale translates to a feeling of comfort and warmth. You'll need enough room to walk on either side so don't squeeze it in too tightly. Stay low to the ground. A mattress that sits on the floor feels just right for curling up and lounging. Frame it with a four‐poster. Without canopies testers or other draped fabric treatments four‐poster beds can feel wonderfully spare. This one provides a visual framework that helps to create a cozy sense of boundaries. Warm it with color. Vivid tomato red keeps this floating bed from feeling sterile. Layer in texture. Nubby tactile linens and surfaces help to prevent a minimalist bed from feeling flat and one‐dimensional. Combine three or four textural yet comfortable elements such as the woven rug wooden planking and feathery plant in this space. Keep the color scheme basic to preserve the stripped‐down sensibility.

One smart solution to saving a new mom's sanity is incorporating a daybed or sofa into the nursery decor. This extra seating can serve as a comfortable spot to sit with your little one or to crash on those extra‐difficult nights. Creating a daybed in the nursery is as simple as pushing a box spring and mattress to the wall and adding a few comfortable pillows. The daybed shown here has the appearance of a lush sofa with the size and comfort of a full‐size bed. Thanks to stores such as Ikea and sites like Craigslist finding an inexpensive sofa can be a simple task. If the fabric isn't exactly what you had in mind don't rule out the piece. Try draping a blanket or quilt over the cushions to freshen up the look. If adding an extra bed or couch to the nursery has you concerned about space planning consider placing the crib at an angle. This will keep the furniture in the room from hugging the walls and will help open up the space. If you incorporate the extra bed into the nursery decor you will have less redecorating to do when the time for a big‐kid bed rolls around. Many young families enjoy spending time in the baby's nursery. The rooms are often peaceful calming spaces so adding a few toys for older siblings like the stuffed animals and rocking horse shown here will help them feel right at home too. Having a cozy spot for nursing or to rest with baby is a nice way to pamper yourself during those first few tiring months that baby's home. When you're no longer spending as much time in the room you can easily remove the extra furniture and place it in other areas of the home.

Sullivan Building & Design Group made the most of this space with an interior renovation that made a bedroom with built‐in beds and book nooks. An all‐white palette keeps things from looking cluttered. A custom bed with built‐in drawers and storage makes the most of this small space beneath the eaves. Built‐ins and wall‐mounted lights are great choices in supertight spaces. An attic conversion doesn't have to have a country look. This space by Catalin David shows that an attic bedroom can easily take a contemporary turn. The addition of skylights makes the space feel less cramped. Follow the lead of Gast Architects and treat sloped ceilings like walls by wallpapering them in a pretty petite print; here the treatment softens the look of the angles. A strong wall color paired with a crisp white ceiling and trim accentuates the angle of the roofline in this springlike bedroom. A built‐in window seat is a great way to take advantage of a nook beneath the window in a converted attic space. Two twin beds are tucked under the eaves of this room decorated by Alix J. Bragg. To make the most of the small space bedside lighting is wall mounted and under‐the‐bed baskets offer extra storage.

Pendant lights aren't just for kitchens. Most rooms including bedrooms can really come to life with the right light fixture. As a designer I consider lighting to be my secret weapon. Entire aesthetics can be defined by a pendant that adds just the right amount of edge to a room. Let's focus on pendant placement and style at the bedside an important and often‐overlooked space. Consider lighting up your bedside with a pendant‐style fixture instead of a table lamp. It's a bit edgy yet it's practical because of all the floor or table space it frees up. This Japanese‐inspired pendant gives an otherwise simple room a global flavor. This is a great example of how a light can define a room's style. Futuristic glam! A perfect silver round pendant adds just the right amount of spunk to this otherwise minimalist bedroom. The designer hung this pendant on the low side which adds to its modern appeal. This long cylinder‐style fixture is a surprising choice for this bedroom. It adequately fills this very narrow space providing great light and visual impact whereas a table lamp would have felt bulky and impractical. This organic‐shaped Tom Dixon Beat Pendant fits the sparseness of this bedside. A floating nightstand adds to this modern translation of minimalism with cord‐free elegance. This bright and textured bedroom displays a beautiful modern pendant set high above the nightstand. There are several height options each creating a different look. For a similar look to this bedroom set the pendant about 48 inches from the top of the nightstand. For a lower more modern look set the pendant 24 inches above the nightstand. This setting offers an interesting study in scale. Notice the oversize headboard with the low nightstand. The silver pendant balances out the two extremes for a polished bedside look.

With a new school year upon us now is the perfect time to give that teen lair an overhaul – and hopefully eke out a bit of quality bonding time in the process. To make this a successful decorating experience it helps to keep an open mind about your teen's creative direction. Recognize that he or she has good ideas and at the same time set clear limits that work for you (a project budget paint but not wallpaper etc.) for results that will make both of you happy in the end. Start an ideabook and create a floor plan. Gather inspiration images and collect the best in an ideabook on Houzz. Just looking at all the images together should help clarify what your son or daughter wants. Once you have the general style nailed down sketch out ideas for the new floor plan. A taller‐than‐average bedside table can do double duty as a desk – a great space saver in a small room. Also think about adding a focal point over the headboard. A quirky sculpture artwork or a pretty textile are all good choices. Just be sure anything that could fall on the bed is very well secured and not too heavy. Think about color and lighting. Once you know the look you are after it's time to think about paint. Use extra‐large paint swatches or get sample‐size amounts to try out colors directly on the wall before buying enough for the whole room to avoid a misstep. Lighting can instantly make the biggest change in a room so now is also the time to create a lighting plan. Add ambience with cafĂ© lights strung across the ceiling install a dimmer switch for an overhead fixture and don't forget proper task lighting for the homework area.

I never had a headboard until I made my own. A few years ago I followed Real Simple's step‐by‐step instructions (reproduced here) and in one day created my very own custom‐made special‐to‐me piece of furniture (or is it an accessory?) using a staple gun some cut‐to‐order plywood foam batting and a fabric scrap I picked up at my favorite upholstery shop. If I were more patient I could have added upholstery nails for added glam. A headboard can really make the room. It's like a piece of jewelry for your bed and depending on what you do with it it can also be a piece of art. All you need to make a grid of small covered panels is plywood a staple gun some batting and some good picture hangers. Her spectacular homemade headboard shows that choosing the right fabric makes all the difference. This was made in much the same way I made mine (plywood staple gun foam batting and that stunning fabric) but with a fancier cut on the plywood. If that seems daunting just keep in mind that this would look amazing as a big rectangle too. Here's her very helpful how‐to. A trifold room screen – minus one panel – set on its side and painted. VoilĂ . An ornate wooden room screen makes a perfect exotic headboard. A salvaged garden trellis give this pale room its shabby chic cherry on top. As with anything that has peeling paint spray a piece like this with a sealant to keep potentially toxic flakes at bay before using it in your bedroom. This is a freight elevator door turned on its side (notice the "Danger" stencil). Consider going muted and simple on the headboard and a little wild on the wall. Here what's behind the headboard is just as important as the headboard itself.
