Edda Braune Kitchen October 08th, 2017 - 19:14:31
Barn red. Blackburn Architects notes that this kitchen is a "project that salvages a historic German‐style bank barn that fell into serious decay and readapts it into a private family entertainment space".
Serene gray. This kitchen is part of an urban loft. "We attempted to create a sophisticated room that is well organized and complementary within a much larger space" says Ayhan Ozan of Chelsea Atelier Architect. "The color gray has a subtle authority to it without entirely surrendering the serenity of the open loft to the kitchen".
Mellow yellow. If you're looking for a take on a French Normandy country home yellow might be your color. "This room was designed to emulate what a kitchen might look like in the countryside of France" says Jo Ann Alston principal at J. Stephens Interiors. "The mustard yellow is very indicative of a French color palette and the hand‐done plaster technique on the walls with the overglaze of a faux‐finish technique makes the walls look aged".
The small choices in this kitchen include sleek appliances noninvasive lighting and a flat‐planel door style on the cabinets. Two more signature elements: the full‐height glass backsplash and the waterfall‐style island countertop.
Matching the floor stain color is one of the most challenging phases of a project. If you've got original floors and plan to refinish just the kitchen – or are laying new wood floors to match the old for continuity – don't expect a perfect match. Many floors in old homes are made of old‐growth wood and flooring is manufactured differently now. The natural patina of an old floor also is nearly impossible to match. Companies offering reclaimed wood floors can make that matching process easier.
While distressed cabinets have a look all their own to begin with pulls help define the style. A sleek bar pull adds a modern element a dark pull creates contrast and a similarly distressed knob blends in allowing the detail in the cabinets to shine.
