Consider a designer pack‐and‐go dining table. Plywood is lightweight and durable and a plywood table can be flat‐packed and assembled as needed at home. Your dining table then can be packed up and moved as necessary. Plus it works well in a home with modern Nordic or contemporary Asian style.

You can't go wrong with a classic country table. Generally the country‐style dining table is large and therefore suitable for families or for people who regularly entertain. These tables are usually made from a solid timber like oak or pine making them very robust. They also have an uncomplicated design suitable for most schemes although pleasingly many country tables feature elegantly turned legs that support the tabletop. The only real consideration in buying this style of table is whether to go for an upmarket one such as a French colonial table or one with the rustic appeal of an English country farmhouse. Whatever you choose to suit your home you can be assured that both will look drop‐dead gorgeous when they are set and dressed for a country farmhouse feast.

Cool and clean. This spectacular dining banquette is sited in the middle of a living space in a renovated 1960s apartment in Melbourne. It was decorated by interior design company Mr. Mitchell within a stand‐alone all‐white cube. This "allowed us to introduce the macramé screen which is a fun reference to the retro era of the apartment" says Mr. Mitchell director Andrew Mitchell.

Glossy uniformly painted cabinets can appear fresh clean and modern. If you're trying to create a more French country look distressed cabinets are a great place to start. There's no reason not to experiment with color on your distressed cabinets. Tans whites and creams are always a safe bet but a light French gray is a new neutral. Grays can be cold on occasion but distressing them so the wood peeks through warms them right up.

Fit the space. "Because of the size of this kitchen and the height of the ceiling we needed a fixture that not only had the appropriate width but also height" says Kristin Petro of Kristin Petro Interiors. "With its tiered design a chandelier fits the space perfectly. In addition the white cabinetry and backsplash provide a neutral backdrop which lets the intricate style of the chandelier really pop".

Gray grout is also a wise choice because it is easy to maintain unlike white grout which can easily yellow or stain. Here are 10 interiors with white subway tiles installed with gray grout. From kitchens to bathrooms to laundry rooms it's a versatile look that would fit right into many homes.

I recommend that clients select appliances and sinks during the preliminary design phase which often comes before selecting the rest of the finishes and fixtures. This is so the plans can reflect the proper sizes which will in turn affect the cabinetry layout. Also I recommend picking the type and amount of lighting fixtures during this phase: cans semi‐flush mounts how many pendants over the island and so on in order to complete the lighting plans so the contractor to provide estimates. Most people haven't actually picked what style pendant light yet but at least the decision about number is done.

There are several ways to create the distressed look. You could start with a few layers of paint then add a spatter of glaze in areas where wear would naturally occur. Or try light sanding or hitting with a chain to reveal colors below; this creates the look of a piece that has been painted multiple times and years of use have worn away some layers. If you're looking for a simpler process painting only one coat and lightly sanding in spots to reveal the wood below also works.

The layering and mixing of finishes in this kitchen give it an old‐world charm. Note the glazed blue‐gray island and its relationship to the pendant above. The choices for a mahogany‐tone wood countertop dark trim around the windows and a custom hood surround in particular were all made during the process of designing this kitchen and impact the overall finished look and style.

Picking bar stools and tables and chairs for an eat‐in kitchen usually comes at the end but this is also important so don't just mail it in at this point. Think about adding patina and texture through vintage pieces if you can find them. And don't forget about items like decorative plate racks artwork and area rugs or runners. Small touches like this can add much character to a newly remodeled kitchen.
