Mismatched chairs same material or shape. If you love hunting for vintage chairs a great way to build a set is by keeping an eye out for chairs made of the same material or in a distinctive shape – cane‐backed ladder‐back wood metal wicker and so on. Once you have your set you can determine whether or not you also want to unify them with paint (see No. 2).

Natural fibers. Jute coir sisal and sea grass are casual and beachy and go with anything – especially stripes. Try partnering your striped sofa with a jute or sisal rug water hyacinth armchairs and a rope‐framed mirror for a fresh nautical look.

Lots of white. Just as with floral upholstery if you have a bold stripe that is threatening to overwhelm your room try whiting it out with crisp white walls and white slipcovered furniture.

Bathtubs. There's nothing like a long luxurious bath. That luxury takes a lot of water – roughly 50 to 70 gallons per bath. Being water wise doesn't have to mean giving up your long soak. When remodeling or building look for smaller tubs with a capacity of less than 60 gallons. Also when you're just looking for a quick clean you'd be more water smart to jump in the shower where you'll use about half the water.

Dramatic flair. In an all‐white kitchen introduce color and texture with bold and cheerfully patterned upholstery. Brighten up the nook with glass pendants a colorful table setting and freshly picked flowers. Note how the pullout drawers under the benches provide storage – a perfect place in which to keep all your board card and trivia games for after‐dinner fun.

Go large. Small knickknacks can look rather lost and insignificant on a mantelpiece. The solution? Choose chunky oversized pieces that are guaranteed to make an impact. Here a kind of gothic‐meets‐pop‐art look gives this mantelpiece masses of original style. The hot‐pink letters add a zingy focal point against the gray backdrop and prevent the skull and statues from looking too intimidating.

Add some soft and rough. The color scheme here is simple but the effect is stunning. Look beyond the simple monochromatic palette and you'll see a range of textures at work. Contrast the matte black wall with the rough surface of the white painted bricks and the soft inviting bed throw with the rough natural‐fiber rug. Even the ceiling and artwork are textured. This is an all‐over tactile and visual feast.

Shades of purple are thought to have a calming effect so they are a smart choice for a bedroom. Mix small hits of pinks and purples with larger swaths of warm whites for a pretty soft and soothing sleeping space.
