Turquoise and green hues provide continuity between the dining room and the parlor. They also continue into the kitchen. Note the small branch side table in the living room which plays off the whimsical forest look in the dining room.

Faded Oriental or floral rug. For a sophisticated twist roll out a faded rug – the more washed out the better. Keep the rest of the pieces in the room simple with solid‐hued armchairs and pillows and a soothing color on the walls.

Shagreen which is made from stingrays is a super‐exotic choice for wall tile. Sourced from Indonesia these tiles are used from the by‐products of rays that have been harvested for food. Many shower enclosures look prefab and clunky but not this one! Besides the modern glass look this system offers bathers full control of their shower's temperature and volume from outside and inside. Perfect for both young and old a glowing LED light indicates water temperature and an alloy valve prevents sudden changes in temperature preventing a shocking surprise (or worse a scald). These gorgeous polished pyrite tiles can be mixed and matched with different sizes and colors. Subway tiles have been popular for a while but how about mirrored subway tiles for a fresh twist? If you want to create a bath fit for a queen be sure to include this unforgettable "Chrysanthemum" pattern complete with inlaid mother of pearl. If you crave sleek style in the bath turn to fashion designer Jason Wu. His new line for Brizo includes this understated glass shelf.

I'm advocating breaking one of my design rules. Well I don't really believe in strict design rules but generally I try to keep big investment pieces (like beds) neutral solid and classic and bring in prints patterns bolder colors and trendy fabrics via less permanent items like rugs throw pillows duvet covers and window treatments. However these gorgeous patterned headboards have been screaming for my attention and I cannot ignore them any longer. Would you sleep beneath a patterned headboard? If so what kind of textile or pattern would you use? Let me know in the Comments section! Go bold and go for height – dynamic fabrics and exaggerated verticality on a headboard can change the entire feeling of a room. These brilliant textiles add to the Moroccan style of this home and the wall behind them painted up to chair‐rail height tricks the eye distorting how we perceive the colors and proportions. Extend the headboard to new heights to show off a beautiful fabric on it and your shams. It would have been a design travesty not to show off this beautiful suzani fabric. Match a sham or another pillow to the headboard. This will give the bedscape a continuous look vertically like these damask‐pattern shams do. To tie a larger area to the bed extend the headboard behind nightstands. A bold trellis pattern grounds this bed with the appropriate scale. You don't have to use fabric to execute this idea. At the Upward Bound House interior designer Vanessa De Vargas used wallpaper to create the look of an extended headboard. You can also use a special traditional fabric. Design Sponge blogger Grace Bonney helped educate the masses about traditional Mexican Otomi embroidery with her famous DIY headboard.

This navy and pink room belongs to the youngest daughter – who was 3 at the time. Keim wanted to design a space that would reflect the girl's sweet and energetic personality and fit the style of the rest of the home. Keim and the girl's mother both fell in love with the wallpaper which dictated the rest of the room's style and color palette. The client trusted Keim so she was given a lot of room to experiment. While she played around with color and pattern she carefully choose the furniture so that it would last each girl into her teens and beyond. "I would use those pieces!" she says. The family's 10‐year‐old daughter loves turquoise so Keim chose a complementary shade of peachy‐orange to help it stand out. "As with most jobs I take their favorite color and make it the accent color " says Keim. "It usually pops more that way." A custom headboard grass cloth wall covering patterned pillows and classic lamps add visual texture and depth to the vibrant space. The tree bookcase was especially exciting for the daughter and she also loves the special pencil set on her desk. The vintage chair was reupholstered in scraps from Keim's showroom for an eclectic one‐of‐a‐kind piece. The girls share a large study a playroom and closets outside of the bedrooms so Keim didn't have to integrate a lot of storage or play space into these rooms.

Think of a classic color palette for a young boy's bedroom and you probably imagine navy and denim blues reds khakis and tans and dark wood accents. And while there's a reason so many boys' spaces default to those hues (they're cheery yet masculine and they work for all ages) a less expected palette can feel just as appropriate. Check out the fresh fun examples below. Cocoa brown and turquoise punch up this lively boy's space. The zebra‐print rug and striped wall treatment are kid friendly yet sophisticated and they'll still look up‐to‐date when the stuffed animals give way to sports gear and electronic equipment. Here's another variation on that same color scheme. Because it's limited to just one wall the robot‐print wallpaper would be easy to strip and replace with a more adult pattern down the road. Hot orange sparks this otherwise neutral boy's bedroom. Orange is a terrific color for kids – it's youthful and energetic but not at all childish. This orange white and gray palette gives a sports theme a chic spin. It's proof that you don't have to drench your room in the colors of your favorite team to show your spirit. Red and khaki look fresh all over again with a liberal dose of black. Mod accents such as these pendant lights are often winners in a kids' space – they have an inherent whimsy that suits young ones well. This chocolate and citron palette takes its cue from tennis balls. The round accent pillows are an especially fun touch. Tangerine safety‐cone orange and neon green combine for a zesty zippy toddler's space.

Collect and curate interesting details – a giant seashell a small bust and real art on the walls will add a storied feel. Splurge on a few luxury bath items to display (and use). Stow all unsightly items behind closed doors or in boxes or bins. It's true that if your existing bath fixtures consist of a pink sink and lemon yellow tile you will be hard pressed to create the black and white palette this look calls for. If you have a bit more time and savings to invest in your bathroom makeover adding wallpaper or a dark paint color to the upper walls and white paneling below (less pricey than retiling) will go far. If you are considering replacing the sink having a vintage cabinet or table fitted with a simple sink bowl can be a creative solution. While you are at it remove that medicine cabinet and hang a pretty mirror instead.
