Deconstruct the log cabin. Kiln‐dried cut firewood insulates this unique home in Montana while native grasses cover the roof. Of course you don't have to go to the extreme of using a facade completely made of logs. Log details can add a rustic modern touch in smaller doses. A custom‐cut log design adds warm Western style to this bathroom ceiling.

The midtone cherry cabinets match the furnishings in the two rooms. The tile backsplash is custom‐cut slate in two different colors that match the original brick in the dining room fireplace. The end result is a kitchen that feels contemporary when someone is looking into the family room and traditional when looking into the dining area.

Emphasize repetition and balance. "I decided to do a black Hungarian crystal chandelier in the kitchen because this is a loft and the dining area was in an 'L' off of the kitchen" says Amy Beth Cupp Dragoo of ABCD Design. "You could see the two smaller clear crystal chandeliers over the dining table from every angle in both areas". "Repetition balance and scale are all important elements in a good design so I felt I was left no choice" she explains. "I had two clear smaller ones on one side so I had to have a large one on the opposite side. I also wanted the fixture to stand out against the white wood hood and kitchen cabinets and it needed to play off the black enamel Viking range. We already had black and white happening throughout the kitchen and I felt the clear crystal wouldn't pop like the black would. It was the obvious choice for the room".

By contrast this classic kitchen with walnut cabinets and a marble tile backsplash has less ornamentation than the previous one but it's still all about the series of small choices: the simplicity of one cabinet finish and wood species the decision to run the marble tile all the way to the ceiling and match the same marble on the countertops. By way of a series of small choices this kitchen reveals its personality and says "This is who I am: I'm classic warm and earthy".

This divided bath by Smith & Vansant Architects features white 3‐by‐6‐inch tiles in both the sink area and the shower area though each room has its own style of floor tile. The headquarters of Schoolhouse Electric proves that subway tiles and gray grout aren't just for the bathroom and kitchen. Here they're used in an office space that celebrates timeless and minimalist style.

Add elegance. "The chandelier gives this space a formal sophisticated ambience" says Grace Kelly principal at Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly. "It was designed to bring elegance into a traditional eat‐in kitchen and serve as a stylistic focal point".

Our washer and dryer are concealed behind bifold doors and while we will replace the cabinetry when we renovate our kitchen the layout is the bee's knees. It allows for us to store our cleaning supplies with our laundry supplies in a central location. Whether you're able to add a laundry unit to your kitchen or outfit your butler's pantry I highly recommend the kitchen laundry room.

Add some soft and rough. The color scheme here is simple but the effect is stunning. Look beyond the simple monochromatic palette and you'll see a range of textures at work. Contrast the matte black wall with the rough surface of the white painted bricks and the soft inviting bed throw with the rough natural‐fiber rug. Even the ceiling and artwork are textured. This is an all‐over tactile and visual feast.
