Warm gray. For a contemporary twist paint the walls around your redbrick fireplace warm gray. A gray that is too cool or flat would not work as well but with a bit of warmth gray complements rather than competes with brick.

Soften it with chalk. Chalkboard paint is an easy and quick way to add some dark drama to a room. It actually creates quite a soft aesthetic as the paint is incredibly matte. Give it a go – you can always draw some white pictures on it if it's too much!

Winnow down your kitchen gear. During a remodel your cooking and eating routine will be disrupted and no matter how much you love to cook ambitious meals will be a challenge. Keep things simple and pare down to the kitchen tools you really truly can't live without. Be merciless – how often are you going to use your food processor or waffle iron? Stash the essentials close at hand and store the rest.

Choose bilevel furniture. Clear surfaces look great – but let's face it they are hard to keep clear. One way to solve that problem is by picking out coffee and side tables with a lower shelf. You can spread out your stuff when you're home alone and then stack it up and stash it on the bottom shelf when company comes.

Stick to one material. Choosing a theme for your mantelpiece display is a helpful way to impose some stylistic order. Try picking items made from the same material. Here glass objects of various sizes look fresh and pretty on this mantel but you could choose to group wooden ceramic silver or brightly painted items.

Solo ledge. When there's ample shelving and storage elsewhere in the house it can make more sense to keep things simple around the fireplace. The single shelf in this living room is enough to add some chic coastal style with accessories.

I recommend that clients select appliances and sinks during the preliminary design phase which often comes before selecting the rest of the finishes and fixtures. This is so the plans can reflect the proper sizes which will in turn affect the cabinetry layout. Also I recommend picking the type and amount of lighting fixtures during this phase: cans semi‐flush mounts how many pendants over the island and so on in order to complete the lighting plans so the contractor to provide estimates. Most people haven't actually picked what style pendant light yet but at least the decision about number is done.

Dutch blue. Occasionally one element drives the color scheme. "The owner chose the color to match the delft tiles" says James Crisp of Crisp Architects. "It's actually a faux finish with an overcoat of a black texture".
