Although I mentioned not wanting to buy expensive art to get tripped over I have no problem with it being displayed on the wall. The piece shown in this image is so gorgeous and really sets the mood for the room. Nightstand space comes at a premium. Books clocks and phones all vie for room. Bedding is expensive especially once you find the perfect duvet pillow shams throw pillows and so on. I've often thought of a neutral color scheme as being boring and safe. When I think of custom drapery my mind often envisions heavy fabric overpowering a room. Area rugs are often used to tie a space together. I love how this rug is the room's focal point. Generally speaking most nightstands are round or square. Who says you have to follow those rules?

Picking bar stools and tables and chairs for an eat‐in kitchen usually comes at the end but this is also important so don't just mail it in at this point. Think about adding patina and texture through vintage pieces if you can find them. And don't forget about items like decorative plate racks artwork and area rugs or runners. Small touches like this can add much character to a newly remodeled kitchen.

Complement the island. This kitchen is in a stately 1920s mansion. "Kitchens in those types of houses were originally only used by the staff not by the homeowners and were therefore dark tiny impractical in layout and the space was broken up by a lot of doors leading to the basement the servants' quarters and butler's pantry" says Ines Hanl of The Sky is the Limit Design. Her challenge was to create a space that was in keeping with the grand lines of such a home without making major modifications to the available square footage.

Details like shaped cabinet doors niches for spices and oils and decorative lighting should all be considered while working on the design development and finish/fixture selection.

Floor‐to‐ceiling subway tile with gray grout is a fitting backdrop for this bathroom's large and dramatic glass shower stall. Smith & Vansant Architects have tiled this shower‐tub enclosure with off‐white subway tiles on both the walls and the ceiling – a smart move for durability.

Emphasize repetition and balance. "I decided to do a black Hungarian crystal chandelier in the kitchen because this is a loft and the dining area was in an 'L' off of the kitchen" says Amy Beth Cupp Dragoo of ABCD Design. "You could see the two smaller clear crystal chandeliers over the dining table from every angle in both areas". "Repetition balance and scale are all important elements in a good design so I felt I was left no choice" she explains. "I had two clear smaller ones on one side so I had to have a large one on the opposite side. I also wanted the fixture to stand out against the white wood hood and kitchen cabinets and it needed to play off the black enamel Viking range. We already had black and white happening throughout the kitchen and I felt the clear crystal wouldn't pop like the black would. It was the obvious choice for the room".

Accent the cabinets. "Our homeowners wanted a hint of sophistication yet wanted to play up the farmhouse look in the kitchen" says Amy Krieger of Oakley Home Builders. "The white cabinetry is accentuated with the use of crystal chandeliers. These glamorous fixtures add elegance while keeping with the theme of the kitchen".

While distressed cabinets have a look all their own to begin with pulls help define the style. A sleek bar pull adds a modern element a dark pull creates contrast and a similarly distressed knob blends in allowing the detail in the cabinets to shine.
