Find a quiet corner in your home where you can draw the curtains. This daybed with great light control provided by the Roman shades is perfect for a 2 p.m. date with the sandman. Use a light blanket to cuddle up with. You will have a hard time falling asleep if you are chilly. Be careful to not overheat with heaters and blankets as this may cause you to oversleep. Surround yourself with blue. Blue is associated with tranquility and produces a calming effect. It is good for the mind‐body connection. Think of the sea and the sky and the calming effect of being outdoors. Try to find a space in your home where you feel removed from everything that is going on. Ideally you want to be away from the noise of TVs cell phones and the doorbell. This cozy nook feels just like a nest and curtains provide a visual barrier.

Crystal chandelier. It might be all about low‐slung pendants and marquee lights right now but a crystal chandelier is never dated. More than a mere light it adds instant sparkle glamour and just a smidgen of grandeur to any space. Even a budget model – as opposed to an original French rewired antique – gives that extra je ne sais quoi. Don't automatically choose bronze by the way. The jewel‐like version here perks up a plain ceiling and echoes other colors in the room.

Streamline media storage. How up to date is your media collection? If you have cupboards crammed with old VHS tapes or hundreds of jewel cases for CDs that are already loaded into your computer and other devices it is high time to purge the old stuff. For discs you do want to keep save space by removing them from the case and slipping the discs inside a binder made for the purpose. Just one or two media binders can hold hundreds of CDs DVDs and Blu‐ray discs.

Matching striped upholstery and solid pillows. Have your armchairs covered in identical striped fabric as the sofa and finish the look off with a cluster of solid‐hued pillows.

Highlight historical flair. Charlie Simmons of Charlie & Co. Design says that in this kitchen "the chandeliers were inspired by the wish of the homeowner to have a traditional kitchen that fit into the fabric of their historically important home but still have a bit of flair".

Mix soft and hard. "My inspiration for hanging this black antique chandelier was to add a sense of sophistication and elegance to the kitchen space" says New Zealand designer Natalie Du Bois of Du Bois Design. "It also softens and offsets the hard solid masculine materials used in the kitchen".

Decorative tile in the kitchen is a great way to express your personality and style but proportion and scale are critical. Tile is a pretty permanent decision; once it's up it's expensive to change. You or your designer should do color studies and pattern studies and look at them alongside photos and samples to be absolutely sure you're making the right choices.

Choose bilevel furniture. Clear surfaces look great – but let's face it they are hard to keep clear. One way to solve that problem is by picking out coffee and side tables with a lower shelf. You can spread out your stuff when you're home alone and then stack it up and stash it on the bottom shelf when company comes.
