Not a fan of large displays of tchotchkes and objets d'art? You can go a bit wilder with color because you won't have visual clutter competing with a bold wall. But bright orange is a tough color to pull off even in a minimalist space. Take a tip from this room and limit the color to one or two smaller walls and pair it with shades of a neutral – such as sage green.

Deconstruct the log cabin. Kiln‐dried cut firewood insulates this unique home in Montana while native grasses cover the roof. Of course you don't have to go to the extreme of using a facade completely made of logs. Log details can add a rustic modern touch in smaller doses. A custom‐cut log design adds warm Western style to this bathroom ceiling.

After attending approximately 30 weddings in the last couple of years I'm approaching the baby‐boom stage of life. And with that come nursery inquires from friends. No matter what anyone's style age or lifestyle is I recommend Jenny Lind–style cribs and beds. Their whimsical spool detailing can easily work in a traditional transitional or eclectic home. A white Jenny Lind crib pops against the nursery's purple flat‐panel wainscoting. Pink paisley pairs with white Jenny Lind single beds to create the bedroom of every little girl's dreams. Thanks to its simple design Jenny Lind furniture is easy to pair with vibrant patterns. The white crib chain‐link rug and whimsical Roman shade fabric in this nursery prove just that. A pair of Jenny Lind single beds contributes to the vintage feel of this sporty bedroom. With customized bunting a white Jenny Lind crib a pouf and a butterfly mobile Parker's nursery is bursting with personality. The functional Jenny Lind trundle acts as an extra bed for sleepovers. Featuring Delta's Jenny Lind crib this nursery is brimming with charm. Stark white bedding makes a contrasting statement as it dresses a classic navy Jenny Lind crib.

Use rolling storage for kids' toys. Keep a variety of your child's favorite toys in storage baskets on wheels. The bins can be wheeled from room to room making it easy to clean up and stow things away when you need a tidy space like now.

The midtone cherry cabinets match the furnishings in the two rooms. The tile backsplash is custom‐cut slate in two different colors that match the original brick in the dining room fireplace. The end result is a kitchen that feels contemporary when someone is looking into the family room and traditional when looking into the dining area.

Accent the cabinets. "Our homeowners wanted a hint of sophistication yet wanted to play up the farmhouse look in the kitchen" says Amy Krieger of Oakley Home Builders. "The white cabinetry is accentuated with the use of crystal chandeliers. These glamorous fixtures add elegance while keeping with the theme of the kitchen".

Serene gray. This kitchen is part of an urban loft. "We attempted to create a sophisticated room that is well organized and complementary within a much larger space" says Ayhan Ozan of Chelsea Atelier Architect. "The color gray has a subtle authority to it without entirely surrendering the serenity of the open loft to the kitchen".

Whitewash. If you have a truly massive brick fireplace and you are not fond of the color consider giving it a gentle whitewash to lighten the hue. This can be a good compromise for those who do not want to paint their brick as it allows some of the texture and color to show through. You can water down the whitewash even more than was done here to very subtly tone down the color of your brick fireplace.

Keep a thoughtfully edited book collection. Books can be one of the great pleasures in life – staring at an overburdened bookcase with tomes spilling onto the floor is not. Aim to keep only the books you love and those you will read again and let go of the rest. Your living room will thank you.

Create a wet room. "The bathroom was completely reconfigured and shuffled around" says Emily Mackie of Inspired Interiors. "The room has 14‐foot ceilings and there’s a huge skylight overhead". She explains that "the idea was really to place the soaking tub in an environment under the skylight and have it share the area with the shower instead of dedicating space to each of them. It made more sense to allow the shower water to hit the tub and be part of an integrated area".
