Antique and modern accents pay tribute to tailoring. The globe is an 18th‐century sewing table and the framed piece above is a shirt made out of a folded map of London. Dittmar designed custom bedding and pillows to conjure the crisp look of ties and pocket squares. From show house to your house: If you're stuck in a decorating rut try playing with a theme in one of your bedrooms. It can be something bold – like a sports‐theme kid's room – or something more subtle like Dittmar's design. But by giving yourself a path to follow you'll have less trouble deciding on what pieces to use. The amazing art installation in this bathroom is by artist Michele Pred who uses airport‐confiscated scissors and knives in much of her work. The design team worked with Pred to create a specific installation for this space – a bathtub full of silver scissors snagged by the Transportation Security Administration.

Decorative tile in the kitchen is a great way to express your personality and style but proportion and scale are critical. Tile is a pretty permanent decision; once it's up it's expensive to change. You or your designer should do color studies and pattern studies and look at them alongside photos and samples to be absolutely sure you're making the right choices.

By contrast this classic kitchen with walnut cabinets and a marble tile backsplash has less ornamentation than the previous one but it's still all about the series of small choices: the simplicity of one cabinet finish and wood species the decision to run the marble tile all the way to the ceiling and match the same marble on the countertops. By way of a series of small choices this kitchen reveals its personality and says "This is who I am: I'm classic warm and earthy".

Glossy uniformly painted cabinets can appear fresh clean and modern. If you're trying to create a more French country look distressed cabinets are a great place to start. There's no reason not to experiment with color on your distressed cabinets. Tans whites and creams are always a safe bet but a light French gray is a new neutral. Grays can be cold on occasion but distressing them so the wood peeks through warms them right up.

The warmth of orange. It's a pretty bold choice for a kitchen but when you hear architect Mark English talk about this room's color palette it makes perfect sense: "The home is sited on a hill with a 270‐degree long‐distance view toward the east and northeast. The color of the light coming into the house tends toward gray and bluish tones so the orange was used to counteract the coolness of those tones. The island and upper cabinets are 'pieces' that can be seen from adjacent rooms and I wanted to highlight them. The regular base cabinets and full‐height cabinets are meant to be background elements".

Brown is not boring. Kitchen and bath specialist Robin Rigby Fisher explains that "this kitchen sits between an original 1918 Craftsman formal dining room and a contemporary family room. The only constant was the dark woodwork throughout both spaces. We also had the challenge of designing around a ceiling height that has a 9‐inch difference from one side of the beam to the other so we chose to incorporate the dark wood accent as a crown molding. The intention was to draw your eye around the room with the goal of minimizing the height discrepancy.

If you're a cook you know that kitchen messes are bound to happen. Grease and oil splatters and flour sprays often end up on cabinets and counters. Distressed cabinets not only hide those little messes well but also are super easy to wipe down. No matter what you choose for the rest of the home it's so important for the kitchen to feel relaxed and inviting; it is the heart of the home after all. Even in a more upscale design scheme distressed cabinets lend a casual air that can't help but be welcoming.
