Treat your feet. Luxurious underfoot artificial grass brings the joy of walking barefoot in the garden without the maintenance of a real lawn. It's perfect for creating a relaxing garden mood on a roof terrace or balcony where natural turf is impractical.

Black is always the new black. If you aren't expecting your table to suffer wear and tear choose the most sophisticated and elegant table you've always dreamed of owning. Black tables are notoriously tricky especially if they are veneered because the smallest scratch will show up. If you are the careful type however black is super cool and will always be so.

Magic mirror reflects current technology. Another mirror concept coming soon to homes can be found already in stores. A specially made full‐length mirror superimposes clothing on your reflection creating the illusion that you’re wearing the selected item of clothing. It’s an easy way to cycle through a large number of garments without wasting time trying them on. One example is the EON Interactive Mirror which has already been installed in mall clothing stores. The system uses Microsoft’s Kinect technology which was created for gaming and repurposed for retail marketing. As you can see the illusion is pretty good.

The hardest part which I didn't anticipate has been picking a color palette. Our adjoining bedroom is painted chamois yellow and it's tough to find a hue that both works with it and doesn't make me look sick. So for now I'm leaning toward classic white – fail‐safe timeless and always in good taste. The greatest thing about white bathrooms: They look equally appropriate in every design style. I'm not sure yet whether I'll stick with my streamlined traditional look or go into totally new territory but these eight outstanding baths will help me pick a direction.

I can't get enough of this fun and fantastic green‐tinged yellow – I've used similar shades of it in small doses all over my new house. It looks supermodern set against shades of gray and pure white. Keep in mind that if you use a vibrant hue in the back of a shelf or niche you'll want to keep any items stored there neat and tidy as everyone's eye will be immediately drawn to that area. Also when you have a lot of cool gray in a space think about including some warm elements such as a wood floor or wood furniture to help it feel warm and inviting.

Geometric play. This small dining nook was designed by Kimball Starr Interior Design in San Francisco. Starr says her clients wanted the area off the kitchen to be used as an activity nook for playing board games with friends; she added a touch of grown‐up glamour with impressive geometric pendants and a custom banquette upholstered in a playful fabric.

Add shine. Hanging a mirror in a dark painted hallway will add lightness and a sense of space without taking away from the dark aesthetic. This convex design reflects the whole space adding depth.
