Accent the cabinets. "Our homeowners wanted a hint of sophistication yet wanted to play up the farmhouse look in the kitchen" says Amy Krieger of Oakley Home Builders. "The white cabinetry is accentuated with the use of crystal chandeliers. These glamorous fixtures add elegance while keeping with the theme of the kitchen".

In typical Draper fashion it was girly but still simple and refined. Now that Sally is getting into her tweens and teens her rebellious side is starting to pop up. Sally may be a a girly girl for at least the beginning of her tween years but as she starts to develop her own style (and delves into the wild style of the early '70s) bold patterns and color may start to make an appearance in her room. Pale pink walls can be replaced with a vibrant (but tasteful) lavender and a bright pink duvet can cover up the old floral bedding. A graphic rug gives this bedoom the final dose of that great mod style.

You can find old painted shutters at any salvage shop. Just remember to seal them before using them as a headboard. Unpainted shutters add to the earthy exotic feel of this room. A large framed piece of corkboard does double duty as a bulletin board and as a ... well as a headboard. Hurray for pallets! They are often free (check first before taking) and they make excellent places to hang stuff on as well. Old fireplace mantels are salvage shop treasures that frame a simple upholstered headboard beautifully. In many places earthquakes prevent hanging anything remotely heavy over the bed (lest it fall on someone's head during the next tembler). This fabric art looks like an extension of the plain nearly invisible headboard here and adds a danger‐free way to decorate the wall.

The dream bath: Greek island idyll. Is escaping to a private whitewashed cottage in Mykonos your idea of heaven? Re‐create the look at home with a pared‐down palette of blue and white along with a few classically Greek details. American Clay makes real clay plaster that can be tinted in any hue and applied to your walls for a gorgeous textured look. Keep a small potted herb garden in the windowsill for fragrance and beauty. Try thyme oregano or mint. If you have enough sun and space you could even bring in a potted lemon tree. Sinkside choose handmade pottery to hold soap and toothbrushes. A classic Greek key print on the edges of towels or trimming window shades would be a nice finishing touch.

Rough hewn. This industrial‐style dining arrangement is easy to copy. Find a wood trestle table and some midcentury modern chairs and fit them into a small area of your home preferably with a window view. The tight space and brick and plaster walls give the dining area a congenial air.

Magic mirrors and magic windows – in fact magic glass surfaces all over the house – will soon become commonplace thanks to breathtaking advancements in computers computer interfaces and of all things glass. It's all about the glass. The leading U.S. innovator in glass for consumer electronics Corning has developed a technology that enables it to manufacture flexible glass as if it were printing wallpaper. The flexible glass will be used as a computerized touch surface theoretically turning any surface – from refrigerator doors to countertops to entire walls – into smart‐touch displays that function like iPad devices. This glass will have the moisture permeability temperature tolerances and clarity of glass but the flexibility and low cost of plastic.

With the machines concealed by hinged cabinet doors guests have no idea that whites are a‐soaking and laundry is a‐drying in this San Francisco kitchen. A nearby kitchen table can be used for folding a trick I often utilize. This space‐saving solution a stackable unit is especially handy for city dwellers where square footage tends to be limited.
