Plantation shutters. These elegant window dressings have become the perfect solution for metropolitan homeowners who don't want sheer curtains but aren't keen on passersby snooping either. Here their crisp clean lines and white color add to the room's bright breezy feel. The other plus of course is undeniable curb appeal.

Mix in modern details. This kitchen has big Western cabin bones – a stone fireplace wood cabinets large exposed trusses. But the restrained details add modern flair. The graphic rug is a fresh interpretation of Navajo style; the oversized pendant in glossy black adds a big modern touch.

Create a wet room. "The bathroom was completely reconfigured and shuffled around" says Emily Mackie of Inspired Interiors. "The room has 14‐foot ceilings and there’s a huge skylight overhead". She explains that "the idea was really to place the soaking tub in an environment under the skylight and have it share the area with the shower instead of dedicating space to each of them. It made more sense to allow the shower water to hit the tub and be part of an integrated area".

For buyers on the move choose a table that is easily transportable. For those who don't stay put a heavy table may prove to be an annoyance weighing you down each time you move. If you fall in love with a metal or marble table don't be discouraged from buying it but do think about how you might safely transport it. As suggested above choose a small round marble table or go for a wooden table with detachable legs. If you are looking for a table to suit an urban‐industrial decor theme don't go all‐out with a (heavy) metal table but consider a (lighter) wood table with some metal design features such as the one pictured here. Plastic as an alternative to wood is light and can be molded into some cool shapes but be aware that the color can fade over time.

Rice paper lantern and kids' art wall. Easy affordable rice paper pendant lights come in a wide range of sizes and create a lovely glow when lit. A wall with casually taped‐up children's artwork and simple white walls and chairs add up to a welcoming space where creativity can shine.

Between the porthole window (nicely echoed by the round mirror) and the starfish accents this space could only be coastal. This proves you don't have to pile on nautical accents to lend a breezy beachy feel. With mirrored sparkle suave lighting and overtones of glamour this bath radiates Hollywood Regency chic. Stripped back to the bare essentials this bath typifies minimalist decor. Where do you think they keep the toiletries? Warm white tones soft light and a sweetly skirted vanity seat? Feels romantic to me. All it needs is a vase of fresh flowers and a candle or two.

The familiar furnishings accents and surfaces in this space right down to the flowered wallpaper mark it as traditional. But its classic mien wouldn't be out of place in a preppy home either. Contemporary forms (that stacked sink!) and plenty of open space drive the design here. The space feels of the moment and that's what contemporary style is all about. From the subway tile to the vintage‐style fixtures and pedestal sink this bath would fit right in with a cottage interior. Beadboard wainscoting would be another ideal choice. This transitional bath blends classic lines and profiles with streamlined detailing and pared‐down accents. It wouldn't look amiss in a traditional or contemporary home but it has its own distinctive appeal.
