Different chairs at the ends. The end chairs don't need to be upholstered to be different – a pair in a style that's different from the rest is all you need to mix things up. Here café chairs are on the long sides of the table and beautiful cane‐back side chairs are at the ends.

Bring in natural light. "A frameless shower gives the illusion of openness. The less metal the less you notice that a wall is dividing the space" says Alison Causer of Alison Causer Design. "In this master bath I really wanted the natural light to reach every corner of the room. Since we used dark natural stone on all four walls we really needed to keep the light moving around the room". Maximize the view. "This home has a sophisticated and subdued palette with walnut casework throughout" says Kerry Ellis of Benning Design Associates. "It also has stunning views which is why we decided to keep the master bath and shower so open".

Notice also the delicate layers of pattern in the tone‐on‐tone wallpaper. A rod (versus chain) installation creates a crisp and somewhat masculine aesthetic that works very well with these drum shades. This eclectic bedroom stretches the limits of minimalism by blending the pendants into the wall. The result is pure function as the aesthetic is more about what is not there. Now this is what I meant by "secret weapon." This otherwise simple bedroom is kicked into high gear with these fabulous pendants. When design goes outside the box magic happens. A guest bedroom is a great place in which to sport a bedside pendant that is unique and memorable. These great pendants look like fancy dinner napkins. The result is a whimsical one‐of‐a‐kind environment for a lucky houseguest.

The diva isn't interested in the ordinary. She wants a bedroom that makes a statement as loud and clear as she does herself. Her eye is honed for unusual finds like a fabulous antique headboard and a classic Louis chair stamped with a face and splashed in lime green. An eclectic space gets her creative juices flowing. Creating an impact is second nature to the diva. A room almost entirely in hot pink? The diva does not hesitate to approve a bold color scheme. In fact why would she stop at the walls? The diva never goes halfway – she ensures that the ceiling is in on the act too. A diva knows that a room in all black exudes edgy drama so you'd better believe she is all for it. The diva knows the talents and ways of the past can teach her multitudes so she is no stranger to antiques. She mixes them in accordingly proud of her one‐of‐a‐kind finds. The diva travels all over the world so she is not about to have a bedroom without an incredible view. If she's a superdiva she likely has several of these bedrooms with a view in all sorts of spectacular places.

Bidets. The U.S. is known for a love of being uberclean so it's surprising that we haven't embraced bidets as they offer a cleanliness we can't get with toilet paper. Beyond cleanliness bidets save water because making toilet paper is an incredibly water‐intensive process. And some bidet users increase their shower intervals saving more water still.

Serene gray. This kitchen is part of an urban loft. "We attempted to create a sophisticated room that is well organized and complementary within a much larger space" says Ayhan Ozan of Chelsea Atelier Architect. "The color gray has a subtle authority to it without entirely surrendering the serenity of the open loft to the kitchen".

Different stripes same color. If you want something a bit spicier try pairing your striped sofa with chairs upholstered in another striped fabric but in the same hue. Varying the width of the stripes is easier on the eye so aim for a mix of wide and narrow.

Faded Oriental or floral rug. For a sophisticated twist roll out a faded rug – the more washed out the better. Keep the rest of the pieces in the room simple with solid‐hued armchairs and pillows and a soothing color on the walls.
