Bump‐out table and globe light. A waterfall‐edge table attached to the wall takes up little floor space yet has a big presence. Hanging a simple pendant light directly over the table focuses attention on the area and provides a warmer glow than the regular kitchen lighting.

While the soft curves of a round mirror can add a more delicate feminine touch to a space two rectangular mirrors make a masculine statement in this bath. The frame of this mirror complements the vanity below perfectly while the sconces add further interest. An hourglass mirror in the center reflects onto the other surfaces in the room creating a 3‐D look. Get a look similar to two mirrors by framing a window with mirrors. These beautiful antique mirrors reflect the light from outside giving the whole room a golden glow.

Light it up with neon. A room saturated in charcoal – from the walls to the paintwork – makes a gorgeous backdrop for neon colors. This electric‐pink table along with the bright yellow artwork pops and helps to define the room which could have been a bit of a black hole without such an energizing color. A couple of pieces are enough though so the dramatic effect of the charcoal isn't lost.

Get the balance right. "This is a steam shower which is why the ceiling is sloped and tiled the glass goes all the way up to the ceiling and there's a hinged panel that can be cranked open" says Ines Hanl. "The shower has white Thassos marble on the walls and a black marble mosaic on the floor both of which are inspired by the color scheme in the rest of the bathroom– black and white marble mosaic for the floor and black‐stained cherry cabinetry". Contrast modern and rustic. "This bathroom was part of a renovation in what was originally an old stone gatehouse" says Kelly Solon of Murdock Solon Architects. "We were trying to insert a clean modern design into a very rustic and visually heavy environment. The frameless enclosure provide a light and airy feel as well as a contrast to the other materials in the space".

Impress your guests. Marble is a big investment but without exception marble dining tables are nearly always showstoppers. Tables crafted from quality imported marble are extremely beautiful. Buy without guilt if you truly fall in love with one – marble's timeless appeal will make it a table that is always in fashion – but do be aware that a marble tabletop comes with a couple of drawbacks. First marble tables of any kind are bulky and heavy. Second they have to be well looked after as the marble can crack and stain. To overcome these limitations to buying a marble table as a forever piece choose a small round table which is a lighter choice than most rectangular ones while still being able to seat four to six guests. To avoid stains keep the table cleared and clean at all times covering it with a tablecloth or placemats when red wine and foods that can damage marble are on the menu.

Focus on accessories. If black walls are a step too far why not add some contrast with black accessories? This boudoir has dark blinds a thick black picture frame and an ebony vanity table creating a darkly luxurious spot. The key here is the glossy surfaces which catch the light rather than absorbing it.

Norwegian wood. In this country kitchen designed by architect Christine Fikseaunet a simple window seat with an upholstered banquette cushion is paired with a wood table to create a casual dining setting. With the addition of a small screen in the corner of the nook it also allows for communal television viewing among family members or friends.

Wood is tops but don't discount glass. The advantage of a glass‐top dining table is that it works well with many decor themes. And because it has a reflective surface it is an excellent choice for a space that might need to look a little lighter and brighter. Glass dining tables are tough too. Today's versions are made with tempered safety glass which means the glass resists scratches and heat and won't shatter if knocked. You can also choose glass that is tinted in a range of different colors even black. Another benefit of a glass table is that you can surround it with versatile seating arrangements from mismatched dining chairs to multicolored options.
