Turquoise and green hues provide continuity between the dining room and the parlor. They also continue into the kitchen. Note the small branch side table in the living room which plays off the whimsical forest look in the dining room.

Watch out for splinters and nails. You'll need to make sure the wood is properly sanded so splinters won't be an issue. When using wood collected from a demolition make sure to carefully remove any old nails. The pieces will need to be planed and cut to the desired shapes and sizes also. Unless you have the right tools and machines this prep work should be done by a professional finish carpenter.

For buyers on the move choose a table that is easily transportable. For those who don't stay put a heavy table may prove to be an annoyance weighing you down each time you move. If you fall in love with a metal or marble table don't be discouraged from buying it but do think about how you might safely transport it. As suggested above choose a small round marble table or go for a wooden table with detachable legs. If you are looking for a table to suit an urban‐industrial decor theme don't go all‐out with a (heavy) metal table but consider a (lighter) wood table with some metal design features such as the one pictured here. Plastic as an alternative to wood is light and can be molded into some cool shapes but be aware that the color can fade over time.

Different chairs same color. Sort of like the trend in bridesmaids' dresses to have the ladies pick their own dresses as long as they are in the same hue mixing and matching chair shapes is easy when you match the color. It does help to choose chairs in the same general style (modern traditional) to keep them feeling like a set.

Although I mentioned not wanting to buy expensive art to get tripped over I have no problem with it being displayed on the wall. The piece shown in this image is so gorgeous and really sets the mood for the room. Nightstand space comes at a premium. Books clocks and phones all vie for room. Bedding is expensive especially once you find the perfect duvet pillow shams throw pillows and so on. I've often thought of a neutral color scheme as being boring and safe. When I think of custom drapery my mind often envisions heavy fabric overpowering a room. Area rugs are often used to tie a space together. I love how this rug is the room's focal point. Generally speaking most nightstands are round or square. Who says you have to follow those rules?

Celebrate luxury. "My inspiration for this bathroom was modern elegance" says Jamie Herzlinger of Jamie Herzlinger Interior Design. "Modern can sometimes get very cold but freestanding tubs celebrate luxury and sensuality. So I personally always feel that if you have the time to enjoy a bath whether alone or with someone else it’s an occasion that needs to be celebrated. Nothing beats taking a bath in a freestanding tub for a sensual experience". Try this in a smaller bathroom. "Freestanding tubs or claw‐foots for that matter have an essence about them" says Sophia Cok of Design Associates. "They have the ability to turn bathing into a luxurious experience".

Add shine. Hanging a mirror in a dark painted hallway will add lightness and a sense of space without taking away from the dark aesthetic. This convex design reflects the whole space adding depth.

Dramatic flair. In an all‐white kitchen introduce color and texture with bold and cheerfully patterned upholstery. Brighten up the nook with glass pendants a colorful table setting and freshly picked flowers. Note how the pullout drawers under the benches provide storage – a perfect place in which to keep all your board card and trivia games for after‐dinner fun.
