A natural green. "This farmhouse kitchen was envisioned to be a highly efficient working‐living space featuring natural materials that express their own beauty" says Douglas Dick of LDa Architecture & Interiors. "The monochromatic green color palette of the walls and island cabinetry was selected to be visually calming and to enhance the theme of expressing the beauty of the room's natural materials".

Metallics. Gleaming silver burnished bronze and shiny gold work as neutrals and do a brilliant job of livening up a dull room. If you feel your space needs a bit of a boost try pairing your striped sofa with a metallic leather pouf sculptural metal coffee table wire chair or gleaming silver pendant lamp.

Streamline media storage. How up to date is your media collection? If you have cupboards crammed with old VHS tapes or hundreds of jewel cases for CDs that are already loaded into your computer and other devices it is high time to purge the old stuff. For discs you do want to keep save space by removing them from the case and slipping the discs inside a binder made for the purpose. Just one or two media binders can hold hundreds of CDs DVDs and Blu‐ray discs.

White subway tile is ever popular but a style that has been gaining in popularity in recent years is to pair white subway tile with dark gray grout in a running‐brick pattern. Purple passion. This project was for a cooking school in Denver but there's no reason you can't import purple into your home kitchen. "Katy Hume the chef and owner of Stir Cooking School has a contagious personality and we wanted her vivacity to be portrayed within the design" says Momoko Morton of Naka Designs. "The interior therefore needed to be vibrant and rich in color".

Be honest about what is used in this room and make space for it. Do you craft while watching TV? Do the kids use the living room as their playroom? Stop the constant struggle to clean up these items and put them where they "belong". Instead work in some permanent living room storage space for toys crafts games and so on. If you need to make room first take out items that are not frequently used in the living room. Books that you want to keep but that no one is likely to read again anytime soon could go on shelves in a bedroom for instance.

Tripod floor lamp. The architectural lines of the tripod floor lamp have made it a living room staple in recent years and it looks set to stick around. As well as adding atmospheric pools of light these cool pieces make a statement in their own right. Place one at either end of a sofa as here for oomph. If you don't fancy neutral lampshades like the ones here swap them for colorful ones to energize your scheme.
