Leather club armchair. Fancy the private members' club look? Then opt for a classic deep‐seated leather armchair like this one; the more battered the better. Buy secondhand for extra lived‐in character or source a vintage‐look piece about town (feather‐filled cushions offer an added slouch factor). Prettify it with a floral cushion then sit back and relax with a cuppa (or glass of port).

Magic mirrors for bedroom and bathroom. While the world waits for the inevitable advancements in glass technology there's still much that's being accomplished with regular glass. Smart mirrors or interactive mirrors are the first application for smart glass technology because they don't need to be transparent. Using existing two‐way‐mirror technology smart mirrors can function in your home like regular mirrors but optionally display information right on the surface of the mirror. One of the better visions for what’s possible with a magic mirror was conceived by of all organizations The New York Times. Yes the Times has its own R&D lab which tries to figure out how people will get news and information in the future. Apparently they’ll get it in the bathroom according to its concept video. The interface for all this breathtaking home technology is just like the evil queen’s technology – magic glass plus voice command and artificial intelligence. The glass surfaces conjure up information and ideas video feeds and communication all appropriate to the context of the user's intent.

Wood is tops but don't discount glass. The advantage of a glass‐top dining table is that it works well with many decor themes. And because it has a reflective surface it is an excellent choice for a space that might need to look a little lighter and brighter. Glass dining tables are tough too. Today's versions are made with tempered safety glass which means the glass resists scratches and heat and won't shatter if knocked. You can also choose glass that is tinted in a range of different colors even black. Another benefit of a glass table is that you can surround it with versatile seating arrangements from mismatched dining chairs to multicolored options.

Celebrate luxury. "My inspiration for this bathroom was modern elegance" says Jamie Herzlinger of Jamie Herzlinger Interior Design. "Modern can sometimes get very cold but freestanding tubs celebrate luxury and sensuality. So I personally always feel that if you have the time to enjoy a bath whether alone or with someone else it’s an occasion that needs to be celebrated. Nothing beats taking a bath in a freestanding tub for a sensual experience". Try this in a smaller bathroom. "Freestanding tubs or claw‐foots for that matter have an essence about them" says Sophia Cok of Design Associates. "They have the ability to turn bathing into a luxurious experience".

Collect and curate interesting details – a giant seashell a small bust and real art on the walls will add a storied feel. Splurge on a few luxury bath items to display (and use). Stow all unsightly items behind closed doors or in boxes or bins. It's true that if your existing bath fixtures consist of a pink sink and lemon yellow tile you will be hard pressed to create the black and white palette this look calls for. If you have a bit more time and savings to invest in your bathroom makeover adding wallpaper or a dark paint color to the upper walls and white paneling below (less pricey than retiling) will go far. If you are considering replacing the sink having a vintage cabinet or table fitted with a simple sink bowl can be a creative solution. While you are at it remove that medicine cabinet and hang a pretty mirror instead.

Not a fan of large displays of tchotchkes and objets d'art? You can go a bit wilder with color because you won't have visual clutter competing with a bold wall. But bright orange is a tough color to pull off even in a minimalist space. Take a tip from this room and limit the color to one or two smaller walls and pair it with shades of a neutral – such as sage green.

Same chairs different colors. Take a basic set of matching wooden chairs and put your own stamp on them by painting each one a different hue. The trick here is to choose colors that have the same value (lightness or darkness) like all pastels all midtones or all bright.

Different chairs at the ends. The end chairs don't need to be upholstered to be different – a pair in a style that's different from the rest is all you need to mix things up. Here café chairs are on the long sides of the table and beautiful cane‐back side chairs are at the ends.
