The deep blue walls are upholstered in a Romo fabric complete with soft batting behind it. The upholstery nails were put in by hand and match the nails on the chairs and bench. Their satin nickel finish picks up on the other finishes in the kitchen.

The warmth of orange. It's a pretty bold choice for a kitchen but when you hear architect Mark English talk about this room's color palette it makes perfect sense: "The home is sited on a hill with a 270‐degree long‐distance view toward the east and northeast. The color of the light coming into the house tends toward gray and bluish tones so the orange was used to counteract the coolness of those tones. The island and upper cabinets are 'pieces' that can be seen from adjacent rooms and I wanted to highlight them. The regular base cabinets and full‐height cabinets are meant to be background elements".

Complement the island. This kitchen is in a stately 1920s mansion. "Kitchens in those types of houses were originally only used by the staff not by the homeowners and were therefore dark tiny impractical in layout and the space was broken up by a lot of doors leading to the basement the servants' quarters and butler's pantry" says Ines Hanl of The Sky is the Limit Design. Her challenge was to create a space that was in keeping with the grand lines of such a home without making major modifications to the available square footage.

Highlight historical flair. Charlie Simmons of Charlie & Co. Design says that in this kitchen "the chandeliers were inspired by the wish of the homeowner to have a traditional kitchen that fit into the fabric of their historically important home but still have a bit of flair".

Depending on what type of professional you hired or if you are doing your own kitchen you may start the finishes and fixture selection process from a different jumping‐off point. Rather than picking the cabinet wood species and finish color by itself and then picking countertops and tile I like to have my clients work on an overall palette of materials at the same time. Layer the materials and create collages of patterns textures and colors to see what works best together.

Layer your lighting. "In the last five years we've seen a huge change in the way that our clients look at kitchen lighting" notes Heather Moe of Design Moe Kitchen & Bath. "While function is still important we now layer the lighting to give homeowners an extraordinary flexibility of effect. We routinely have seven levels of illumination: countertop and general lighting under‐cabinet task lighting over‐cabinet up lighting accent cabinet lighting some supporting sconce fixtures (mounted on walls or on cabinets) ceiling lighting and – to top it all off – a central accent fixture usually something pretty and eye catching at the room's focal point".

A natural green. "This farmhouse kitchen was envisioned to be a highly efficient working‐living space featuring natural materials that express their own beauty" says Douglas Dick of LDa Architecture & Interiors. "The monochromatic green color palette of the walls and island cabinetry was selected to be visually calming and to enhance the theme of expressing the beauty of the room's natural materials".

I recommend that clients select appliances and sinks during the preliminary design phase which often comes before selecting the rest of the finishes and fixtures. This is so the plans can reflect the proper sizes which will in turn affect the cabinetry layout. Also I recommend picking the type and amount of lighting fixtures during this phase: cans semi‐flush mounts how many pendants over the island and so on in order to complete the lighting plans so the contractor to provide estimates. Most people haven't actually picked what style pendant light yet but at least the decision about number is done.
