Problem‐solve with a versatile shape. Ovals are the new oblongs. Similar to a rectangular dining table the oval dining table is elongated to work in a narrow room but visually seems to occupy less space because of its rounded corners. Oval tables also have the benefits of a round table in that they provide a cozy and intimate setting but can usually seat more people.

Once I've worked with the client to pick the collage of materials for the kitchen we lay these out to focus on paint color. The reason this phase often comes bit later is that the kitchen might be under construction and still have the old paint color on the walls. The floors may be covered in that pinkish‐red rosin paper which can affect the look of the color on the walls.

By contrast this classic kitchen with walnut cabinets and a marble tile backsplash has less ornamentation than the previous one but it's still all about the series of small choices: the simplicity of one cabinet finish and wood species the decision to run the marble tile all the way to the ceiling and match the same marble on the countertops. By way of a series of small choices this kitchen reveals its personality and says "This is who I am: I'm classic warm and earthy".

Dot with jewel‐toned brights. This exquisitely put together living room is a stellar example of how a space with a very dark base can be vibrant. With the color palette focused on strong shades of green turquoise and mustard in light‐catching materials this dark space is an atmospheric haven.

Dutch blue. Occasionally one element drives the color scheme. "The owner chose the color to match the delft tiles" says James Crisp of Crisp Architects. "It's actually a faux finish with an overcoat of a black texture".

Lots of white. Just as with floral upholstery if you have a bold stripe that is threatening to overwhelm your room try whiting it out with crisp white walls and white slipcovered furniture.

Keep a thoughtfully edited book collection. Books can be one of the great pleasures in life – staring at an overburdened bookcase with tomes spilling onto the floor is not. Aim to keep only the books you love and those you will read again and let go of the rest. Your living room will thank you.

Decorative over‐the‐mantel mirror. It's the oldest interiors trick in the book. A striking over‐the‐mantel mirror gives even a supersnug living room a sense of space and light. However don't settle for just any old mirror. For old‐school elegance go for a Shabby Chic–style French‐looking piece with an ornate white plaster or gilt wooden frame. If you can afford to get an original vintage mirror complete with authentically aged silvering. If not consider reproductions – they work a similar magic for less cash.
