Different chairs at the ends. The end chairs don't need to be upholstered to be different – a pair in a style that's different from the rest is all you need to mix things up. Here café chairs are on the long sides of the table and beautiful cane‐back side chairs are at the ends.

Perfect symmetry. Just because you love minimalist design doesn't mean you have to go without when it comes to storage. This unit combines ample space in the lower cabinets with plenty of display space above. The natural timber contrasts nicely with the tiles wrapping around the fireplace surround. For a polished and professional‐looking finish custom‐made cabinets are often the way to go. The cabinets work so well here because they align precisely with the top of the fireplace.

Bump‐out table and globe light. A waterfall‐edge table attached to the wall takes up little floor space yet has a big presence. Hanging a simple pendant light directly over the table focuses attention on the area and provides a warmer glow than the regular kitchen lighting.

Different stripes same color. If you want something a bit spicier try pairing your striped sofa with chairs upholstered in another striped fabric but in the same hue. Varying the width of the stripes is easier on the eye so aim for a mix of wide and narrow.

Corner bench and slipcovered armchair and chandelier. Carve out a breakfast nook that exudes easy elegance with a comfy bench seat plumped up with plenty of pillows a real armchair and a classic chandelier. Choose a chair with an upright profile for more comfortable seating at the table and be sure to pick a washable slipcover to make your life easier.

Notice also the delicate layers of pattern in the tone‐on‐tone wallpaper. A rod (versus chain) installation creates a crisp and somewhat masculine aesthetic that works very well with these drum shades. This eclectic bedroom stretches the limits of minimalism by blending the pendants into the wall. The result is pure function as the aesthetic is more about what is not there. Now this is what I meant by "secret weapon." This otherwise simple bedroom is kicked into high gear with these fabulous pendants. When design goes outside the box magic happens. A guest bedroom is a great place in which to sport a bedside pendant that is unique and memorable. These great pendants look like fancy dinner napkins. The result is a whimsical one‐of‐a‐kind environment for a lucky houseguest.

Stick to one material. Choosing a theme for your mantelpiece display is a helpful way to impose some stylistic order. Try picking items made from the same material. Here glass objects of various sizes look fresh and pretty on this mantel but you could choose to group wooden ceramic silver or brightly painted items.

Same stripes different color family. Often a fabric pattern comes in several different color groups. If you can track down the fabric an easy way to pick pillows for your striped sofa is to have them made from the same print in a contrasting hue.
