Persian rug. Their intricate patterns and warm colors give any space a homey feel as well as a touch of exoticism. Plus these traditional rugs work equally well laid over wooden floorboards stone or carpet. Period settings are their natural habitat but they can also cozy up a modern space. For a tapestry effect mix several smaller rugs as seen here. The most skilfully handwoven rugs can be pricey but purse‐friendly designs are not hard to find.

Same chair same color family. A riff on the same‐chair different‐colors idea but with more subtlety. The idea here is to choose closely related colors – try earth tones or shades of a single hue.

Garden fresh. Children's colorful artwork has been framed and hung to personalize this charming nook. This is a great idea for families especially when a kitchen nook is also used as a homework and craft center. Installing a small U‐shaped nook is a clever way to divide a kitchen with a generous expanse of floor. Take advantage of the extra room and install a nook big enough to accommodate plenty of dinner party guests.

Treat the tub like furniture. "The owner just fell in love with this tub and had to have it" says Colleen Knowles of knowles ps. "It worked perfectly in this older home where we transformed an extra bedroom into a fabulous master bathroom. The vanities and tub look like furniture items set around the room in an interesting way and the layout leaves the large original windows unobstructed". Add curves to a rectangle. "For this bathroom we wanted a way to maintain as much floor space as possible and create an 'unfitted' look at the same time" says Lance Stratton of Stratton Studio. The tub we selected has a small footprint but still looks substantial. Its slipper shape provides some relief to what is an otherwise rectilinear room".

The dream bath: Greek island idyll. Is escaping to a private whitewashed cottage in Mykonos your idea of heaven? Re‐create the look at home with a pared‐down palette of blue and white along with a few classically Greek details. American Clay makes real clay plaster that can be tinted in any hue and applied to your walls for a gorgeous textured look. Keep a small potted herb garden in the windowsill for fragrance and beauty. Try thyme oregano or mint. If you have enough sun and space you could even bring in a potted lemon tree. Sinkside choose handmade pottery to hold soap and toothbrushes. A classic Greek key print on the edges of towels or trimming window shades would be a nice finishing touch.

Magic mirrors for bedroom and bathroom. While the world waits for the inevitable advancements in glass technology there's still much that's being accomplished with regular glass. Smart mirrors or interactive mirrors are the first application for smart glass technology because they don't need to be transparent. Using existing two‐way‐mirror technology smart mirrors can function in your home like regular mirrors but optionally display information right on the surface of the mirror. One of the better visions for what’s possible with a magic mirror was conceived by of all organizations The New York Times. Yes the Times has its own R&D lab which tries to figure out how people will get news and information in the future. Apparently they’ll get it in the bathroom according to its concept video. The interface for all this breathtaking home technology is just like the evil queen’s technology – magic glass plus voice command and artificial intelligence. The glass surfaces conjure up information and ideas video feeds and communication all appropriate to the context of the user's intent.

Watch out for splinters and nails. You'll need to make sure the wood is properly sanded so splinters won't be an issue. When using wood collected from a demolition make sure to carefully remove any old nails. The pieces will need to be planed and cut to the desired shapes and sizes also. Unless you have the right tools and machines this prep work should be done by a professional finish carpenter.

You can't go wrong with a classic country table. Generally the country‐style dining table is large and therefore suitable for families or for people who regularly entertain. These tables are usually made from a solid timber like oak or pine making them very robust. They also have an uncomplicated design suitable for most schemes although pleasingly many country tables feature elegantly turned legs that support the tabletop. The only real consideration in buying this style of table is whether to go for an upmarket one such as a French colonial table or one with the rustic appeal of an English country farmhouse. Whatever you choose to suit your home you can be assured that both will look drop‐dead gorgeous when they are set and dressed for a country farmhouse feast.
