Try tailored and tucked‐in bunks. Without losing the getaway‐home element this room has a much more tailored look than most bunk rooms. The bedding is simple and tucked in tightly. The tone on tone of whites gives the room a clean and serene feel. Curtains are neatly stacked with a dense fabric. To get this look with a lighter fabric have the curtains lined with a heavier solid material to complement the pattern you are working with. Better yet give your guest bunkers a treat by lining the curtains with blackout fabric. Mix it up. Mismatched bedding can transform the feeling of a bunk room. When beds are snuggled into a small hallway or attic finding not a single matching sheet blanket or pillow brings you back to childhood when the cabin was heaven for old linens dishes and furniture that weren't being used at home. To create this look resist the urge to buy sets. See a pillow you like? Just grab it and continue your hunt. Visit antiques stores and look for old wool blankets and quilts. One trip to the dry cleaner and they're ready for bed.

This gray and pink room is perfect for a sweet little baby girl. But switch out that crib and add some toy storage and it's also perfect for a growing girl. The books and knickknacks on the shelf will change but the bright colors multipurpose furniture and neutral walls and floors can grow and morph until college. A black wall makes for a very sophisticated nursery (with lot of opportunity for bright pops of color). Use chalkboard paint and this becomes the perfect graffiti wall for ages 2 to 18. Another black accent wall in a nursery. With the classic Eames rocker and the simple neutral decor this baby room could could last through college. Bright walls and fun patterns make sense for a long time. The black and white ceiling stripes stimulate an infant's brain and they still make sense for a teenager who wants to turn the room into a punk rock palace. There are several ways to create the distressed look. You could start with a few layers of paint then add a spatter of glaze in areas where wear would naturally occur. Or try light sanding or hitting with a chain to reveal colors below; this creates the look of a piece that has been painted multiple times and years of use have worn away some layers. If you're looking for a simpler process painting only one coat and lightly sanding in spots to reveal the wood below also works.

Sitting pretty. With a simple color palette such as black and white letting fireside shelving blend in rather than stand out can be a wise idea. This wall unit has been built into and out from the wall around the fireplace. The design houses the TV in style and creates a spot for recessed shelving to one side.

I'm advocating breaking one of my design rules. Well I don't really believe in strict design rules but generally I try to keep big investment pieces (like beds) neutral solid and classic and bring in prints patterns bolder colors and trendy fabrics via less permanent items like rugs throw pillows duvet covers and window treatments. However these gorgeous patterned headboards have been screaming for my attention and I cannot ignore them any longer. Would you sleep beneath a patterned headboard? Go bold and go for height – dynamic fabrics and exaggerated verticality on a headboard can change the entire feeling of a room. These brilliant textiles add to the Moroccan style of this home and the wall behind them painted up to chair‐rail height tricks the eye distorting how we perceive the colors and proportions. Extend the headboard to new heights to show off a beautiful fabric on it and your shams. It would have been a design travesty not to show off this beautiful suzani fabric. Match a sham or another pillow to the headboard. This will give the bedscape a continuous look vertically like these damask‐pattern shams do. To tie a larger area to the bed extend the headboard behind nightstands. A bold trellis pattern grounds this bed with the appropriate scale. You don't have to use fabric to execute this idea. At the Upward Bound House interior designer Vanessa De Vargas used wallpaper to create the look of an extended headboard. You can also use a special traditional fabric. Envision a deeply restorative space. The best way to begin any design project is with a clear vision of your hopes for the end result. Take a moment to ponder what your ideal bedroom space would look like and how it would feel – the scent the textures the sounds. Create as clear a picture as you possibly can and hold that in your mind as you move forward with the project. Clean the air. Air quality affects health and wellness and poor air quality can impact sleep. The easiest way to clean the air in your bedroom is simply to open your windows. Commit to letting fresh air into your bedroom for at least 10 minutes each day and the air quality is sure to improve. To take it a step further you may want to add several potted plants and an air purifier. Limit technology and remove emotional clutter. When you visualized your ideal bedroom I'd wager that it wasn't filled with clutter or the tangle of wires dangling from your laptop. Giving yourself a break from tech devices at night will help promote deeper rest and is probably a good idea healthwise as well. Also take a moment to consider the things you have stored in your bedroom. Are there boxes of bills and paperwork that make your stomach knot each time you see them? Piles of clothes that no longer fit workout tools you don't use or photos of friends you have a tense relationship with? All of these things can contribute to stress and insomnia so out they must go. Clean thoroughly and naturally. Often our bedrooms fall way down to the bottom of our cleaning to‐do list simply because not many others have to see these private spaces.
