Here's another green‐accented kitchen but this hue has more blue in it and creates a nice midcentury modern vibe. You can't go wrong pairing this pretty hue with white and light‐toned woods.

Not your basic black. For some people black might seem to be as bold a choice as orange. But in a home with a limited color palette – black white blue and gray – it fits right in.

With the machines concealed by hinged cabinet doors guests have no idea that whites are a‐soaking and laundry is a‐drying in this San Francisco kitchen. A nearby kitchen table can be used for folding a trick I often utilize. This space‐saving solution a stackable unit is especially handy for city dwellers where square footage tends to be limited.

"We attempted to create a sophisticated room that is well organized and complementary within a much larger space" says Ayhan Ozan of Chelsea Atelier Architect. Complement the island. This kitchen is in a stately 1920s mansion. "Kitchens in those types of houses were originally only used by the staff not by the homeowners and were therefore dark tiny impractical in layout and the space was broken up by a lot of doors leading to the basement the servants' quarters and butler's pantry" says Ines Hanl of The Sky is the Limit Design. Her challenge was to create a space that was in keeping with the grand lines of such a home without making major modifications to the available square footage.

For the modernists out there you would think picking finishes and fixtures would be easier with less adornment and fewer decisions to make. For some this might be true but I find that for others this style can be just as challenging. It's all about restraint and editing and that's hard.
