Go for the tried and true: a weathered wood table. A secondhand wood table with a farmhouse or industrial heritage has already passed the test of time. Any scratches and nicks in the tabletop surface have mellowed into design details becoming features to admire. If you accidentally add a few more to it it won't matter. For this reason these tables are great for families with children – you never have to worry about whether your brood is unwittingly or even intentionally marking the table. The damage if minor will only become part of the beauty of the piece. That said it's worth protecting your table with a hard wax polish which should be applied about twice a year.

Covered dining. This dining space has a wood alcove built up and over a table creating an elegant dining space that looks like a private dining booth in an upscale bistro. The mix of materials from the timber paneling to the channeled upholstery and stone table adds sophistication to the alcove's slick urban look.

The dream bath: Greek island idyll. Is escaping to a private whitewashed cottage in Mykonos your idea of heaven? Re‐create the look at home with a pared‐down palette of blue and white along with a few classically Greek details. American Clay makes real clay plaster that can be tinted in any hue and applied to your walls for a gorgeous textured look. Keep a small potted herb garden in the windowsill for fragrance and beauty. Try thyme oregano or mint. If you have enough sun and space you could even bring in a potted lemon tree. Sinkside choose handmade pottery to hold soap and toothbrushes. A classic Greek key print on the edges of towels or trimming window shades would be a nice finishing touch.

Air plants and succulents are having a real moment in design and they have the benefit of being easy to care for. If you and your teen are in the mood to tackle a crafty project I love this DIY air plant terrarium tutorial on Houzz. It's chic and easy the best combination! Update the homework zone. Ground the work area with a creative and useful chalkboard wall or include a large bulletin board for pinning up lists photos and inspiration. Pay attention to the ergonomics of the space as well making sure the chair and desk are at the right height. Good task lighting is essential and any additional storage you can squeeze into the space will help maintain order. At least consider a small filing crate and a basket for recycling. Add an entryway. In my experience most messes come from the junk we put down as soon as we enter a space. Help prevent the big chaotic pileup before it begins with a few preventative measures: A coat tree or wall hooks will hopefully keep those coats and bags off the floor and a dresser or table placed near the door can be a drop zone for mail keys and other odds and ends. Provide hangout space. If you have the room bring in a retired couch from the basement or attic. If space is tight try a fluffy area rug with a few big floor cushions instead. Add an unexpected touch. Every room should have something that immediately catches your eye or makes you smile and your teen's room is no exception. Make the room glow with a cluster of cheap and chic paper lanterns scoop up a funky neon sign or a vintage marquee letter at the flea market or frame a portrait of a favorite pet. Give hobbies and interests pride of place.

Be well read. "My client had seen a wallpaper at a hotel with a book pattern that she loved " says designer Angela Gutekunst. "So that led me to this classic Brunschwig & Fils paper for her powder bath that worked beautifully".

Impress your guests. Marble is a big investment but without exception marble dining tables are nearly always showstoppers. Tables crafted from quality imported marble are extremely beautiful. Buy without guilt if you truly fall in love with one – marble's timeless appeal will make it a table that is always in fashion – but do be aware that a marble tabletop comes with a couple of drawbacks. First marble tables of any kind are bulky and heavy. Second they have to be well looked after as the marble can crack and stain. To overcome these limitations to buying a marble table as a forever piece choose a small round table which is a lighter choice than most rectangular ones while still being able to seat four to six guests. To avoid stains keep the table cleared and clean at all times covering it with a tablecloth or placemats when red wine and foods that can damage marble are on the menu.

The deep blue walls are upholstered in a Romo fabric complete with soft batting behind it. The upholstery nails were put in by hand and match the nails on the chairs and bench. Their satin nickel finish picks up on the other finishes in the kitchen.

Purple passion. This project was for a cooking school in Denver but there's no reason you can't import purple into your home kitchen. "Katy Hume the chef and owner of Stir Cooking School has a contagious personality and we wanted her vivacity to be portrayed within the design" says Momoko Morton of Naka Designs. "The interior therefore needed to be vibrant and rich in color".
