Same chairs different upholstery (or seat cushions). Another way to mix up a set of matching chairs is to re‐cover the seats in an array of different fabrics. Or for nonupholstered wooden chairs simply add fresh seat cushions in a pleasing range of colors and patterns.

Celebrate luxury. "My inspiration for this bathroom was modern elegance" says Jamie Herzlinger of Jamie Herzlinger Interior Design. "Modern can sometimes get very cold but freestanding tubs celebrate luxury and sensuality. So I personally always feel that if you have the time to enjoy a bath whether alone or with someone else it’s an occasion that needs to be celebrated. Nothing beats taking a bath in a freestanding tub for a sensual experience". Try this in a smaller bathroom. "Freestanding tubs or claw‐foots for that matter have an essence about them" says Sophia Cok of Design Associates. "They have the ability to turn bathing into a luxurious experience".

Prepare to combat chills. There's no getting around it – open showers can be drafty especially in the winter months. Installing a heat lamp and radiant heat bathroom flooring can offset the shivers. Mount a heated towel rack nearby and you'll be extra toasty as you dry off. Choose an appropriate showerhead. Unless you have a very large buffer zone a standard showerhead that angles outward can end up soaking your space. Opt for a rain‐style model which casts water straight down or a handheld type that allows you to control the position and flow. If you do use a more conventional model mount it so that the spray hits an opposite wall rather than the shower opening.

Bright and breezy. This built‐in banquette needs little more than a small table and a couple of light‐colored chairs to complete a fine‐looking and functional kitchen nook. The window bench extends from the end of the kitchen cabinets to create an ideal space between two big windows. The banquette can also double as storage with a hinged lid seat covered by cushions.

Soak in the sunset. For this bathroom Crisp chose a vintage black claw‐foot tub. "Who wouldn't want to relax in a hot bath while gazing into the sunset across the rolling hills?" he asks. Highlight the positive. "Prior to its remodel this master bathroom had a built‐in vanity and tub surround that started at the entry door by the sinks and was carried all the way around to the shower" says Susan Brown of Susan E. Brown Interior Design. "By using a freestanding bathtub and separate vanities I knew the space would be opened up yet still feel cohesive with the integration of similar colors and finishes". She adds that "having negative space surrounding the tub gives more emphasis to it as the pièce de résistance of the room. I continued to emphasize that aspect with hidden accent lighting that shines through the onyx tub deck and down onto the iridescent turquoise glass tiles creating an 'incredible soft glow ' as my client put it".

Make peace with a loss of privacy. If you don't like to feel exposed – even when you're alone in the house – an open shower may not be for you. Even if you don't have a bare window wall such as the one in this bathroom you'll be on full view from the rest of the space. Consider a frosted or textured glass half‐wall as a compromise if modesty is an issue. Integrate the design with the rest of the space. Because there's no concrete border between an open shower and its surroundings choose materials that will create a smooth transition. The wall tile in this bath continues seamlessly into the shower with only a change in ceiling materials to provide a visual stopping point.

Know that it's always OK to celebrate the cowboy. In this Denver study artwork by Duke Beardsley adds Western range style. It hangs over an elegant mantel reclaimed from a Scottish castle. Sturdy leather furniture contrasts with the soft fabrics and polished chandelier.

Dramatic flair. In an all‐white kitchen introduce color and texture with bold and cheerfully patterned upholstery. Brighten up the nook with glass pendants a colorful table setting and freshly picked flowers. Note how the pullout drawers under the benches provide storage – a perfect place in which to keep all your board card and trivia games for after‐dinner fun.
