I’ve always wanted a freestanding bathtub. I'm not really sure why. There's just something so appealing about all the different sizes and shapes and how they sit so independently in a room and seem to virtually say "Look at me". And now these designers have given me 16 more reasons why I need to get one. Take advantage of the view. "I must admit that the homeowners drove the decisions for these tubs" says James Crisp of Crisp Architects (see next photo also). "The real inspiration is the view. If a master bath has a separate shower and room for a freestanding tub strategically positioned to enjoy a great view the big question is why not?" This tub is from Waterworks.

Dramatic flair. In an all‐white kitchen introduce color and texture with bold and cheerfully patterned upholstery. Brighten up the nook with glass pendants a colorful table setting and freshly picked flowers. Note how the pullout drawers under the benches provide storage – a perfect place in which to keep all your board card and trivia games for after‐dinner fun.

Impress your guests. Marble is a big investment but without exception marble dining tables are nearly always showstoppers. Tables crafted from quality imported marble are extremely beautiful. Buy without guilt if you truly fall in love with one – marble's timeless appeal will make it a table that is always in fashion – but do be aware that a marble tabletop comes with a couple of drawbacks. First marble tables of any kind are bulky and heavy. Second they have to be well looked after as the marble can crack and stain. To overcome these limitations to buying a marble table as a forever piece choose a small round table which is a lighter choice than most rectangular ones while still being able to seat four to six guests. To avoid stains keep the table cleared and clean at all times covering it with a tablecloth or placemats when red wine and foods that can damage marble are on the menu.

Do it for Mom. "The idea for this beautiful tub really came from my client Susan" says Colleen Mahoney of Mahoney Architects. "She wanted her master bathroom to include a freestanding tub where she could feel that she was getting away from all of the demands of her daily life – a place with a sense of sanctuary and quiet. The tall ceilings and suspended chandelier contribute to the sense of luxury. In a busy mom's life it's good to have a place to escape". Give your guests the best. "This bathroom is situated within a dormer gable on the top floor of a large house and it receives infrequent use" says Dennis Budd of Gast Architects. "When the bathroom door is open the room’s position adjacent the open central stair’s upper hall landing allows occupants to view the tub dormer windows and decorative full‐height tile wainscoting as they ascend to the roof level".

Think of a classic color palette for a young boy's bedroom and you probably imagine navy and denim blues reds khakis and tans and dark wood accents. And while there's a reason so many boys' spaces default to those hues (they're cheery yet masculine and they work for all ages) a less expected palette can feel just as appropriate. Check out the fresh fun examples below. Cocoa brown and turquoise punch up this lively boy's space. The zebra‐print rug and striped wall treatment are kid friendly yet sophisticated and they'll still look up‐to‐date when the stuffed animals give way to sports gear and electronic equipment. Here's another variation on that same color scheme. Because it's limited to just one wall the robot‐print wallpaper would be easy to strip and replace with a more adult pattern down the road. Hot orange sparks this otherwise neutral boy's bedroom. Orange is a terrific color for kids – it's youthful and energetic but not at all childish. This orange white and gray palette gives a sports theme a chic spin. It's proof that you don't have to drench your room in the colors of your favorite team to show your spirit. Red and khaki look fresh all over again with a liberal dose of black. Mod accents such as these pendant lights are often winners in a kids' space – they have an inherent whimsy that suits young ones well. This chocolate and citron palette takes its cue from tennis balls. The round accent pillows are an especially fun touch. Tangerine safety‐cone orange and neon green combine for a zesty zippy toddler's space.

Collect and curate interesting details – a giant seashell a small bust and real art on the walls will add a storied feel. Splurge on a few luxury bath items to display (and use). Stow all unsightly items behind closed doors or in boxes or bins. It's true that if your existing bath fixtures consist of a pink sink and lemon yellow tile you will be hard pressed to create the black and white palette this look calls for. If you have a bit more time and savings to invest in your bathroom makeover adding wallpaper or a dark paint color to the upper walls and white paneling below (less pricey than retiling) will go far. If you are considering replacing the sink having a vintage cabinet or table fitted with a simple sink bowl can be a creative solution. While you are at it remove that medicine cabinet and hang a pretty mirror instead.

Different chairs same color. Sort of like the trend in bridesmaids' dresses to have the ladies pick their own dresses as long as they are in the same hue mixing and matching chair shapes is easy when you match the color. It does help to choose chairs in the same general style (modern traditional) to keep them feeling like a set.

Different chairs at the ends. The end chairs don't need to be upholstered to be different – a pair in a style that's different from the rest is all you need to mix things up. Here café chairs are on the long sides of the table and beautiful cane‐back side chairs are at the ends.
