Creating an area above a large bed for childhood keepsakes trinkets and books will make the room feel more cozy and childlike. If you're worried about a big bed taking up too much space consider painting the wall behind the bed a nice dark color. This will give the illusion of depth and make the room appear larger. Another great trick to add the illusion of space is to use lots of mirrors. I love the brightness the two mirrors flanking this large bed bring to the room. If you have the square footage lining the walls with multiple queen‐size beds is a great way to sleep a crowd. This room is perfect for slumber parties and late‐night pillow fights. This space looks like it was just transformed into a more mature design. The map keeps it playful but you'll be happy to hang on to the furniture long after your child has left for college. When choosing furniture go for timeless clean pieces your child will be happy to keep well into adulthood. Keeping the room colorful as with this bright pink accent wall will prevent the space from becoming too grown‐up. This cute nautical‐themed room would be great for a growing boy. The materials and patterns feel youthful but classic so it works as an instant guest room when necessary.

Restaurant‐style doors and globe chandelier. Why not make the door a design feature? Restaurant‐style swinging doors with circular glass insets bring energy to the kitchen here while a chandelier made up of globe lights in different hues echoes the shape of the round panes in the door.

Color palette is a key consideration when deciding how to incorporate a reclaimed wood wall according to Matt Schmidt of AMEK Custom Builders. Reclaimed wood's finish can vary greatly from smooth weathered gray to rough hewn in a rainbow of paint colors. When in doubt clean white walls work well with any color of wood.

Swing‐arm sconce. A swing‐arm sconce designed to extend over the table (like the one shown here) is an unexpected alternative to the traditional chandelier and can work even for renters if you choose a plug‐in version. Because the bulb is exposed you'll need to use a lower‐watt filament bulb to create that lovely soft glow. But because one low‐watt bulb is not enough to light a room on its own it is necessary to supplement with additional lighting – try a second sconce or a pair of lamps atop a credenza.

Filament chandelier. Filament bulbs have risen in popularity with good reason – they exude charm and cast a beautifully warm glow. Single filament bulbs are typically available only in 40 to 60 watts but using a chandelier with many exposed filament bulbs is a wonderful way to get all the charm and the light you need.

Envision a deeply restorative space. The best way to begin any design project is with a clear vision of your hopes for the end result. Take a moment to ponder what your ideal bedroom space would look like and how it would feel – the scent the textures the sounds. Create as clear a picture as you possibly can and hold that in your mind as you move forward with the project. Clean the air. Air quality affects health and wellness and poor air quality can impact sleep. The easiest way to clean the air in your bedroom is simply to open your windows. Commit to letting fresh air into your bedroom for at least 10 minutes each day and the air quality is sure to improve. To take it a step further you may want to add several potted plants and an air purifier. Limit technology and remove emotional clutter. When you visualized your ideal bedroom I'd wager that it wasn't filled with clutter or the tangle of wires dangling from your laptop. Giving yourself a break from tech devices at night will help promote deeper rest and is probably a good idea healthwise as well. Also take a moment to consider the things you have stored in your bedroom. Are there boxes of bills and paperwork that make your stomach knot each time you see them? Piles of clothes that no longer fit workout tools you don't use or photos of friends you have a tense relationship with? All of these things can contribute to stress and insomnia so out they must go. Clean thoroughly and naturally. Often our bedrooms fall way down to the bottom of our cleaning to‐do list simply because not many others have to see these private spaces.

Try a modern take on traditional. "The owner likes traditional claw‐foot tubs but the house called for a more modern fixture" says Randall Mars of Randall Mars Architects. "This tub by Wetstyle has modern lines with that same feeling. In addition it floats nicely in the space and enjoys great views. The pocket shutters offer privacy while flooding the room with light". Think green. "This bathroom was an ecochic project where we used several natural or recycled/reclaimed products" says Kerrie L. Kelly of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab. "The clients fell in love with the hammered‐copper tub when they saw it. Luckily the entire bathroom was demoed so we had the opportunity to take an existing tub/shower and covert the space to accommodate a large shower and separate freestanding tub. It now serves as the centerpiece to the master suite renovation".

Light it up with neon. A room saturated in charcoal – from the walls to the paintwork – makes a gorgeous backdrop for neon colors. This electric‐pink table along with the bright yellow artwork pops and helps to define the room which could have been a bit of a black hole without such an energizing color. A couple of pieces are enough though so the dramatic effect of the charcoal isn't lost.
