Magic mirrors for bedroom and bathroom. While the world waits for the inevitable advancements in glass technology there's still much that's being accomplished with regular glass. Smart mirrors or interactive mirrors are the first application for smart glass technology because they don't need to be transparent. Using existing two‐way‐mirror technology smart mirrors can function in your home like regular mirrors but optionally display information right on the surface of the mirror. One of the better visions for what’s possible with a magic mirror was conceived by of all organizations The New York Times. Yes the Times has its own R&D lab which tries to figure out how people will get news and information in the future. Apparently they’ll get it in the bathroom according to its concept video. The interface for all this breathtaking home technology is just like the evil queen’s technology – magic glass plus voice command and artificial intelligence. The glass surfaces conjure up information and ideas video feeds and communication all appropriate to the context of the user's intent.

Go for the tried and true: a weathered wood table. A secondhand wood table with a farmhouse or industrial heritage has already passed the test of time. Any scratches and nicks in the tabletop surface have mellowed into design details becoming features to admire. If you accidentally add a few more to it it won't matter. For this reason these tables are great for families with children – you never have to worry about whether your brood is unwittingly or even intentionally marking the table. The damage if minor will only become part of the beauty of the piece. That said it's worth protecting your table with a hard wax polish which should be applied about twice a year.

Winnow down your kitchen gear. During a remodel your cooking and eating routine will be disrupted and no matter how much you love to cook ambitious meals will be a challenge. Keep things simple and pare down to the kitchen tools you really truly can't live without. Be merciless – how often are you going to use your food processor or waffle iron? Stash the essentials close at hand and store the rest.

Picking bar stools and tables and chairs for an eat‐in kitchen usually comes at the end but this is also important so don't just mail it in at this point. Think about adding patina and texture through vintage pieces if you can find them. And don't forget about items like decorative plate racks artwork and area rugs or runners. Small touches like this can add much character to a newly remodeled kitchen.

Envision a deeply restorative space. The best way to begin any design project is with a clear vision of your hopes for the end result. Take a moment to ponder what your ideal bedroom space would look like and how it would feel – the scent the textures the sounds. Create as clear a picture as you possibly can and hold that in your mind as you move forward with the project. Clean the air. Air quality affects health and wellness and poor air quality can impact sleep. The easiest way to clean the air in your bedroom is simply to open your windows. Commit to letting fresh air into your bedroom for at least 10 minutes each day and the air quality is sure to improve. To take it a step further you may want to add several potted plants and an air purifier. Limit technology and remove emotional clutter. When you visualized your ideal bedroom I'd wager that it wasn't filled with clutter or the tangle of wires dangling from your laptop. Giving yourself a break from tech devices at night will help promote deeper rest and is probably a good idea healthwise as well. Also take a moment to consider the things you have stored in your bedroom. Are there boxes of bills and paperwork that make your stomach knot each time you see them? Piles of clothes that no longer fit workout tools you don't use or photos of friends you have a tense relationship with? All of these things can contribute to stress and insomnia so out they must go. Clean thoroughly and naturally. Often our bedrooms fall way down to the bottom of our cleaning to‐do list simply because not many others have to see these private spaces.

Give newspapers and magazines a temporary home. One neat basket of magazines or newspapers looks fine – a table strewn with them not so much. Dedicate one generously sized basket to house periodicals and commit to weeding out old issues when they no longer comfortably fit in the container.
