Bring ranch outbuilding style indoors. The corrugated metal here provides an industrial contrast to the large beams while a door on a track brings barn style inside.

Chesterfield sofa. It's an ongoing favorite in fashionable bars and boutique hotels and no wonder. With their clean lines and comfort button‐backed chesterfield sofas are truly timeless and look as good in a modern warehouse apartment as in a grand country abode. The classic version comes in tan leather but for a sumptuous update I love the raspberry‐pink and pewter‐colored velvet numbers here.

The layering and mixing of finishes in this kitchen give it an old‐world charm. Note the glazed blue‐gray island and its relationship to the pendant above. The choices for a mahogany‐tone wood countertop dark trim around the windows and a custom hood surround in particular were all made during the process of designing this kitchen and impact the overall finished look and style.

The midtone cherry cabinets match the furnishings in the two rooms. The tile backsplash is custom‐cut slate in two different colors that match the original brick in the dining room fireplace. The end result is a kitchen that feels contemporary when someone is looking into the family room and traditional when looking into the dining area.

Low profile. The position and shape of this great fireplace call for shelving that enhances its sleek design. The low‐set shelves echo the rectangular fireplace and provide a platform on which to display stylish pieces.

Whitewash. If you have a truly massive brick fireplace and you are not fond of the color consider giving it a gentle whitewash to lighten the hue. This can be a good compromise for those who do not want to paint their brick as it allows some of the texture and color to show through. You can water down the whitewash even more than was done here to very subtly tone down the color of your brick fireplace.

Toilet: Bidet retrofit. Toto's Washlet and similar products allow conventional toilets to act as both toilet and bidet with the easy addition of a new seat. The seat has an integrated water nozzle that functions as a bidet.

Same chairs different colors. Take a basic set of matching wooden chairs and put your own stamp on them by painting each one a different hue. The trick here is to choose colors that have the same value (lightness or darkness) like all pastels all midtones or all bright.

Picture cluster. OK you've seen a thousand feature walls with multiple frames and artworks. But there's a reason this idea has stuck: It works. A cluster of pictures turns an ordinary living room into a home. Hanging one is an easy way to reflect your personality as seen in this quirky abode and whether you line up or misalign the frames mix or match somehow everything always hangs together.
