Mirrors. Here's a look I recently enjoyed while visiting the Shangri‐La Hotel in Vancouver: mirrors layered over bathroom windows. It creates a resort feel but is practical and can be re‐created at home. Hanging a mirror in the window (either on a picture wire or by fixed metal supports) fills in the window enough to create a sense of privacy while still allowing light to filter in. For more privacy simply cover the exposed glass with translucent film.

Low profile. The position and shape of this great fireplace call for shelving that enhances its sleek design. The low‐set shelves echo the rectangular fireplace and provide a platform on which to display stylish pieces.

This sophisticated bedroom gets a nice punch of color via furniture and decorative accessories in happy shades of coral. Because the coral elements are spread throughout the room it doesn't feel overly colorful and your eye is able to move about the space taking it all in. Additionally the white elements in the room keep the taupey‐tan hues from looking too muddy.

Treat your feet. Luxurious underfoot artificial grass brings the joy of walking barefoot in the garden without the maintenance of a real lawn. It's perfect for creating a relaxing garden mood on a roof terrace or balcony where natural turf is impractical.

Rethink the antlers. The form is widely available in resin or ceramic versions these days. Jason Miller designed this striking ceramic sconce. Feather wallpaper adds a Native American element in unexpected colors.

Matching the floor stain color is one of the most challenging phases of a project. If you've got original floors and plan to refinish just the kitchen – or are laying new wood floors to match the old for continuity – don't expect a perfect match. Many floors in old homes are made of old‐growth wood and flooring is manufactured differently now. The natural patina of an old floor also is nearly impossible to match. Companies offering reclaimed wood floors can make that matching process easier.

Persian rug. Their intricate patterns and warm colors give any space a homey feel as well as a touch of exoticism. Plus these traditional rugs work equally well laid over wooden floorboards stone or carpet. Period settings are their natural habitat but they can also cozy up a modern space. For a tapestry effect mix several smaller rugs as seen here. The most skilfully handwoven rugs can be pricey but purse‐friendly designs are not hard to find.

Mix in modern details. This kitchen has big Western cabin bones – a stone fireplace wood cabinets large exposed trusses. But the restrained details add modern flair. The graphic rug is a fresh interpretation of Navajo style; the oversized pendant in glossy black adds a big modern touch.

Bring depth to a neutral room. If color isn't your thing create interest with texture. In this room a range of items with texture from the natural wood to the touch‐me throw and rug add plenty of interest.
