Geometric play. This small dining nook was designed by Kimball Starr Interior Design in San Francisco. Starr says her clients wanted the area off the kitchen to be used as an activity nook for playing board games with friends; she added a touch of grown‐up glamour with impressive geometric pendants and a custom banquette upholstered in a playful fabric.

Wood is tops but don't discount glass. The advantage of a glass‐top dining table is that it works well with many decor themes. And because it has a reflective surface it is an excellent choice for a space that might need to look a little lighter and brighter. Glass dining tables are tough too. Today's versions are made with tempered safety glass which means the glass resists scratches and heat and won't shatter if knocked. You can also choose glass that is tinted in a range of different colors even black. Another benefit of a glass table is that you can surround it with versatile seating arrangements from mismatched dining chairs to multicolored options.

Massive paper lantern. Suspended over the table like a full moon the paper lantern is on a grand scale making this dining space so impressive. And while an authentic Noguchi paper lantern is stunning there are paper lanterns available at all prices and in all sizes.

Update the trophies. This buck silhouette emits playfully positive chi in this bedroom. Look closely and you'll spy another contemporary approach to wildlife art: a colorful bear portrait in the bathroom.

Different chairs same color. Sort of like the trend in bridesmaids' dresses to have the ladies pick their own dresses as long as they are in the same hue mixing and matching chair shapes is easy when you match the color. It does help to choose chairs in the same general style (modern traditional) to keep them feeling like a set.

Showerheads. You don't have to give up a luxe shower experience to save water. Feel virtuous when lathering up with a WaterSense‐certified shower head. WaterSense understands that no one wants a wimpy shower spray so all their approved fixtures tout a "satisfactory shower that is equal to or better than conventional showerheads on the market" while using just 2 gallons of water per minute.

Corner nook. Custom woodwork and banquette seating can create a sophisticated corner nook in the kitchen. In this L‐shaped arrangement the wood grain of the built‐in banquette is matched to the kitchen countertops and complemented by a white table and cabinets. To add color and interest it has been decorated with a variety of flea market finds.

Invest in a blue chip: A case for retro. Anything retro should be considered a keepsake piece of furniture that has the potential to be handed down from generation to generation. The dining table that catches your eye at a market or auction may not be particularly fashionable or even fit into your present decor scheme but don't let that deter you from buying something of quality and style from another era. It may well prove to be the best investment of all escalating in value in the decades to come.

Shagreen which is made from stingrays is a super‐exotic choice for wall tile. Sourced from Indonesia these tiles are used from the by‐products of rays that have been harvested for food. Many shower enclosures look prefab and clunky but not this one! Besides the modern glass look this system offers bathers full control of their shower's temperature and volume from outside and inside. Perfect for both young and old a glowing LED light indicates water temperature and an alloy valve prevents sudden changes in temperature preventing a shocking surprise (or worse a scald). These gorgeous polished pyrite tiles can be mixed and matched with different sizes and colors. Subway tiles have been popular for a while but how about mirrored subway tiles for a fresh twist? If you want to create a bath fit for a queen be sure to include this unforgettable "Chrysanthemum" pattern complete with inlaid mother of pearl. If you crave sleek style in the bath turn to fashion designer Jason Wu. His new line for Brizo includes this understated glass shelf.

Add a half‐wall to protect against splashes. Ideally an open shower requires at least a 6‐foot buffer zone on every side to avoid flooding the rest of the bath with water. But a half‐wall such as the one that divides this shower from the vanity can help to contain droplets. Consider a corner location if possible. Orient the shower in a corner that faces away from the other bathroom zones. Not only does this guard against spraying water but it also preserves some measure of privacy (more on that in a minute).
