Same stripes different color family. Often a fabric pattern comes in several different color groups. If you can track down the fabric an easy way to pick pillows for your striped sofa is to have them made from the same print in a contrasting hue.

Whitewash. If you have a truly massive brick fireplace and you are not fond of the color consider giving it a gentle whitewash to lighten the hue. This can be a good compromise for those who do not want to paint their brick as it allows some of the texture and color to show through. You can water down the whitewash even more than was done here to very subtly tone down the color of your brick fireplace.

Plantation shutters. These elegant window dressings have become the perfect solution for metropolitan homeowners who don't want sheer curtains but aren't keen on passersby snooping either. Here their crisp clean lines and white color add to the room's bright breezy feel. The other plus of course is undeniable curb appeal.

Mod seating and fairy‐tale pendant light. Sleek smooth mod plastic chairs create a dynamic counterpoint to an intricate whimsical pendant light here. Sticking with white for the chairs and light fixture keeps this kitchen (with its pink cabinets) from veering into too‐sweet territory.

Perfect symmetry. Just because you love minimalist design doesn't mean you have to go without when it comes to storage. This unit combines ample space in the lower cabinets with plenty of display space above. The natural timber contrasts nicely with the tiles wrapping around the fireplace surround. For a polished and professional‐looking finish custom‐made cabinets are often the way to go. The cabinets work so well here because they align precisely with the top of the fireplace.

Create an illusion. Where you choose to use light and dark colors can have a huge influence on a space. In this lofty white room the ceiling and walls down to the picture rail have been painted black helping to visually lower the high ceiling for a much cozier mood. Or try painting the end wall of a long narrow room black to visually bring it forward.

Not a fan of large displays of tchotchkes and objets d'art? You can go a bit wilder with color because you won't have visual clutter competing with a bold wall. But bright orange is a tough color to pull off even in a minimalist space. Take a tip from this room and limit the color to one or two smaller walls and pair it with shades of a neutral – such as sage green.
