Matching the floor stain color is one of the most challenging phases of a project. If you've got original floors and plan to refinish just the kitchen – or are laying new wood floors to match the old for continuity – don't expect a perfect match. Many floors in old homes are made of old‐growth wood and flooring is manufactured differently now. The natural patina of an old floor also is nearly impossible to match. Companies offering reclaimed wood floors can make that matching process easier.

Create a center of attention. "This kitchen was designed to bring a symmetrical balance to the back windowed wall" says Marlene Wangenheim of Interiors By Design. "All the materials though rich were very played down– for example the white quartz stone countertops and the Calacatta marble brick tile with mother‐of‐pearl in the backsplash". "The chandelier brings your eye immediately to the center of the room and then the tour begins" she adds. "The glitz of the chandelier also balances the serene color palette by contrasting it and giving it a wow effect".

Build a spiritual oasis. "The master bathroom in this project was part of a second floor remodel" says Anat Shmariahu of ANAV Design. "The clients wanted their bathroom to be their 'living room.' They are very busy people and the bathroom is a relaxing space for them a time for being together". "For me freestanding tubs represent luxury calm and a spalike environment which is exactly what my clients were looking for. We wanted to make this a spiritual environment so that when you enter you are immediately transported. The tub was actually purchased before we even finished the design. My clients just fell in love with it and it became the main focal point in this master bath".

Swing‐arm sconce. A swing‐arm sconce designed to extend over the table (like the one shown here) is an unexpected alternative to the traditional chandelier and can work even for renters if you choose a plug‐in version. Because the bulb is exposed you'll need to use a lower‐watt filament bulb to create that lovely soft glow. But because one low‐watt bulb is not enough to light a room on its own it is necessary to supplement with additional lighting – try a second sconce or a pair of lamps atop a credenza.

Serene gray. This kitchen is part of an urban loft. "We attempted to create a sophisticated room that is well organized and complementary within a much larger space" says Ayhan Ozan of Chelsea Atelier Architect. "The color gray has a subtle authority to it without entirely surrendering the serenity of the open loft to the kitchen".

Dutch blue. Occasionally one element drives the color scheme. "The owner chose the color to match the delft tiles" says James Crisp of Crisp Architects. "It's actually a faux finish with an overcoat of a black texture".

Unlike in a kitchen a living area or a den private papers and materials stay private in a bedroom and distractions tend to be fewer. The trick of course is to create an office that doesn't disrupt a bedroom's restful feel or take up more than its share of space. These homeowners and design pros have managed to come up with a happy middle ground. Take a look at how they made it work. A desk takes the place of a nightstand in this bedroom yet it blends in so smoothly that it doesn't immediately read as a work area. Keeping the finish and style consistent with the bed helps to integrate the two visually and the large piece of artwork mounted above takes some of the focus off the computer. This setup takes a similar tack. Trimming out the bulletin board with molding helps it to feel like a thoughtful part of the design rather than an incidental. Bedrooms are often designed so that windows flank the most natural spot to orient the bed which can make furniture placement tricky. If yours is the same way choose a low desk that won't obscure the sunlight and the views. The key to this bedroom office: the glam mirrored desk which blends into the space because of its reflectivity. Although it's perfectly functional stylish accents mask its workhorse side. If wall space is limited go vertical. Custom or prefab shelves which you can paint the same color as the walls maximize every inch.

Tripod floor lamp. The architectural lines of the tripod floor lamp have made it a living room staple in recent years and it looks set to stick around. As well as adding atmospheric pools of light these cool pieces make a statement in their own right. Place one at either end of a sofa as here for oomph. If you don't fancy neutral lampshades like the ones here swap them for colorful ones to energize your scheme.

Same chairs different upholstery (or seat cushions). Another way to mix up a set of matching chairs is to re‐cover the seats in an array of different fabrics. Or for nonupholstered wooden chairs simply add fresh seat cushions in a pleasing range of colors and patterns.
