Same chairs different colors. Take a basic set of matching wooden chairs and put your own stamp on them by painting each one a different hue. The trick here is to choose colors that have the same value (lightness or darkness) like all pastels all midtones or all bright.

Bright and breezy. This built‐in banquette needs little more than a small table and a couple of light‐colored chairs to complete a fine‐looking and functional kitchen nook. The window bench extends from the end of the kitchen cabinets to create an ideal space between two big windows. The banquette can also double as storage with a hinged lid seat covered by cushions.

Picture cluster. OK you've seen a thousand feature walls with multiple frames and artworks. But there's a reason this idea has stuck: It works. A cluster of pictures turns an ordinary living room into a home. Hanging one is an easy way to reflect your personality as seen in this quirky abode and whether you line up or misalign the frames mix or match somehow everything always hangs together.

Perfect symmetry. Just because you love minimalist design doesn't mean you have to go without when it comes to storage. This unit combines ample space in the lower cabinets with plenty of display space above. The natural timber contrasts nicely with the tiles wrapping around the fireplace surround. For a polished and professional‐looking finish custom‐made cabinets are often the way to go. The cabinets work so well here because they align precisely with the top of the fireplace.

Mixed patterns same color. Why stop with mixing stripes when you can mix in other patterns as well? When you keep the colors to a strict palette the patterns will feel like an intentional mix. Try a wide stripe narrow stripe solid and fun printed textile like a batik or suzani in a matching hue.

Our washer and dryer are concealed behind bifold doors and while we will replace the cabinetry when we renovate our kitchen the layout is the bee's knees. It allows for us to store our cleaning supplies with our laundry supplies in a central location. Whether you're able to add a laundry unit to your kitchen or outfit your butler's pantry I highly recommend the kitchen laundry room.

Picking bar stools and tables and chairs for an eat‐in kitchen usually comes at the end but this is also important so don't just mail it in at this point. Think about adding patina and texture through vintage pieces if you can find them. And don't forget about items like decorative plate racks artwork and area rugs or runners. Small touches like this can add much character to a newly remodeled kitchen.

The layering and mixing of finishes in this kitchen give it an old‐world charm. Note the glazed blue‐gray island and its relationship to the pendant above. The choices for a mahogany‐tone wood countertop dark trim around the windows and a custom hood surround in particular were all made during the process of designing this kitchen and impact the overall finished look and style.

Solid neutrals. You can't miss with a pair of armchairs upholstered in natural linen and a light rug. Mixing patterns with the throw pillows brings a bit of interest to the room but keeping them in the neutral range means they will all go effortlessly together.
